Autoimmune mediated hyperkinetic movement disorders in SARS-CoV-2 infection - a systematic review.

INTRODUCTION: Various neurological symptoms have been confirmed in the course of SARS-CoV-2 infection. Some of these are undoubtedly the aftermath of the developing inflammation and increased coagulation processes. However, there is also a group of symptoms that derive from possible autoimmune processes. These include primary hyperkinetic movement disorders such as myoclonus, ataxia, opsoclonus, and tremors. This study systematically reviews scientific reports presenting patients with hyperkinetic movement disorders as one of the neurological symptoms. MATERIAL AND METHODS: The available lite

Beyond motor hyperactivity: Racing thoughts are an integral symptom of adult attention deficit hyperactivity disorder.

Adults with ADHD experience mental restlessness, akin to racing thoughts, but data on this symptom in ADHD remain scarce. Our study aims at investigating self-reported racing thoughts in adults with ADHD, and its relationship with affective dysregulation and insomnia. We were also interested in whether racing thoughts may aid differential diagnosis with bipolar disorder (BD). 182 adults with ADHD, 30 ADHD+BD, 31 hypomanic BD, and 20 euthymic BD patients completed the Racing and Crowded Thoughts Questionnaire (RCTQ). ADHD, anxiety, insomnia and depression symptoms, as well as affective temperam

Vitamin D and Hyperkinetic Movement Disorders: A Systematic Review.

BACKGROUND: The importance of vitamin D deficiency in Parkinson's disease, its negative influence on bone health, and even disease pathogenesis has been studied intensively. However, despite its possible severe impact on health and quality of life, there is not a sufficient understanding of its role in other movement disorders. This systematic review aims at providing an overview of the prevalence of vitamin D deficiency, bone metabolism alterations, and fractures in each of the most common hyperkinetic movement disorders (HKMDs). METHODS: The study search was conducted through PubMed with ke

Early life stress induces hyperactivity but not increased anxiety-like behavior or ethanol drinking in outbred heterogeneous stock rats.

Early life stress is known to impact vulnerability to psychopathological disorders in adulthood, including anxiety and alcohol use disorder (AUD), but the mechanisms underlying susceptibility to these outcomes are not fully understood. In the current study, we used adolescent social isolation (ASI) to determine whether Heterogeneous Stock (HS) rats, an outbred model used for genetic fine-mapping, could be used to study the genetics contributing to ASI-induced anxiety- and AUD-like behavior. We isolated (ASI) or group-housed (adolescent group-housed; AGH) 64 male HS rats at 4 weeks of age. Afte

Hyperkinetic manifestations in nocturnal frontal lobe epilepsy. Semeiological features and physiopathological hypothesis.

Nocturnal frontal lobe epilepsy is a syndromic entity that includes paroxysmal episodes with variable semeiology, intensity and duration, representing different aspects of the same epileptic condition. In a large series studied by videopolysomnographic recording at the Department of Neurological Sciences in Bologna, we disclosed four main semeiological patterns: the paroxysmal arousals, brief simple motor phenomena, similar to a sudden arousal, recurring several times per night; the hypermotor seizures, more complex motor episodes with violent motor behaviour, vocalisation, screaming, fearful

Physiology of hypokinetic and hyperkinetic movement disorders: model for dyskinesia.

Although the basal ganglia have been implicated in the development of movement disorders since the 1940s, the exact role played by these structures has remained elusive. The development of the 1-methyl-4-phenyl-1,2,3,6-tetrahydropyridine-monkey model of parkinsonism, and the recent resurgence of surgical therapy for the treatment of hypokinetic and hyperkinetic movement disorders has, however, led to an improved understanding of the pathophysiological mechanisms that underlie their development. In this article, we review the functional organization and examine the changes in neuronal activity

Mild Sanfilippo syndrome: a further cause of hyperactivity and behavioural disturbance.

Sanfilippo syndrome (mucopolysaccharidosis type III) usually presents with severe behavioural disturbance and it has characteristic features. The patient's condition follows a neurodegenerative course; death generally occurs in the second decade. Five patients, from three families, who presented with a mild variety of the syndrome are reported here. Four of the five patients did not show the usual somatic features, and none showed regression. It is important that clinicians be aware of this mild variant so that appropriate tests can be undertaken in retarded children and adults.

Toxocara canis infection and hyperactivity.

An observational study using video recordings and computer assisted data analysis showed that infection with Toxocara canis larvae had a marked effect on five readily and reliably differentiable categories of murine behaviour. The infection was also associated with an increase in the number of shorter bouts of each behavior. These results indicate that infection with T. canis renders mice hyperactive, and would appear to justify a complete reappraisal of the role of this neurotropic parasite as a cause of behavioural abnormalities such as hyperactivity in children.

[Dyscephalia-cataracta congenita-hypotrichosis (DCH) syndrome (Ullrich-Fremerey-Dohna, Hallermann-Streiff, Francois). Report of a case showing extrapyramidal hyperkinesia and dementia (author's transl)].

In a 43-year-old man dyscephalia, cataracta congenita, and hypotrichosis were the outstanding features. These signs were first described in 1953 by Ullrich and Fremerey-Dohna as a clinical entity. Since 1958 the DCH syndrome was published under the synonyms of "Francois syndrome" and of "Hallermann-Streiff syndrome". However, as these authors did not add any essential details relevant for the classification of the syndrome we prefer to retain the term "Ullrich-Fremerey-Dohna syndrome". In our case in addition to the above mentioned and well known manifestations, extrapyramidal hyperkinesia of

A zebrafish model for calcineurin-dependent brain function.

Small-molecule modulators of calcineurin signaling have been proposed as potential therapeutics in Down syndrome and Alzheimer's disease. Models predict that in Down syndrome, suppressed calcineurin-NFAT signaling may be mitigated by proINDY, which activates NFAT, the nuclear factor of activated T-cells. Conversely, elevated calcineurin signaling in Alzheimer's disease may be suppressed with the calcineurin inhibitors cyclosporine and tacrolimus. Such small-molecule treatments may have both beneficial and adverse effects. The current study examines the effects of proINDY, cyclosporine and tacr

Hyperkinetic reaction to dihydrocodeine.

A young man was using dihydrocodeine analgesia for ear pain having had suppurative otitis media. He attended the emergency department with restlessness and twitching movements in his arms and legs. He had fever with otherwise normal vital signs. He had no signs of cerebellar pathology. Investigations were normal. The working diagnosis was of hyperkinetic reaction to dihydrocodeine. Symptoms resolved within 48 hours of withdrawing the drug. Serotonin toxicity is a rare side effect of dihydrocodeine. There is a theoretical basis for increased side effects when taken with cannabidiol-based substa

Peripubertal exposure to the neonicotinoid pesticide dinotefuran affects dopaminergic neurons and causes hyperactivity in male mice.

Although neonicotinoid pesticides are expected to have harmful influence on mammals, there is little animal experimental data to support the effect and mechanisms. Since acetylcholine causes the release of dopamine, neonicotinoids may confer a risk of developmental disorders via a disturbance in the monoamine systems. Male mice were peripubertally administered dinotefuran (DIN) referring to no observed effect level (NOEL) and performed behavioral and immunohistological analyses. In an open field test, the total locomotor activity was increased in a dose-dependent manner. The immunoreactivity o

Locomotor Profiling from Rodents to the Clinic and Back Again.

The quantification of unconditioned motoric activity is one of the oldest and most commonly utilized tools in behavioral studies. Although typically measured in reference to psychiatric disorders, e.g., amphetamine-induced hyperactivity used as a model of schizophrenia, bipolar disorder (BD), and Tourette's syndrome, the motoric behavior of psychiatric patients had not been quantified similarly to rodents until recently. The rodent behavioral pattern monitor (BPM) was reverse-translated for use in humans, providing the quantification of not only motoric activity but also the locomotor explorat

Clinical decision-making in functional and hyperkinetic movement disorders.

OBJECTIVE: Functional or psychogenic movement disorders (FMD) present a diagnostic challenge. To diagnose FMD, clinicians must have experience with signs typical of FMD and distinguishing features from other hyperkinetic disorders. The aim of this study was to clarify the decision-making process of expert clinicians while diagnosing FMD, myoclonus, and tics. METHODS: Thirty-nine movement disorders experts rated 60 patients using a standardized web-based survey resembling clinical practice. It provided 5 steps of incremental information: (1) visual first impression of the patient, (2) medical

A case of hyperkinetic movement disorder associated with LGI1 antibodies.

Encephalitis associated with leucine-rich glioma inactivated 1 (LGI1) antibodies is often encountered in elderly male patients and may infrequently present with isolated syndromes. A 6-year-old boy was admitted with acute onset severe oral and facial stereotypic and choreiform movements. On his neurologic examination, he had repetitive and rhythmic movements in orolingual muscles including tongue protrusion, limb chorea and minimal facial stereotypic movements. Anti-streptolysin O (ASO) titers were found severely elevated in several measurements. Well-characterized antibodies against ion chann

Understanding the reward system functioning in anorexia nervosa: crucial role of physical activity.

Hyperactivity is a potential neurobiological marker and a core psychopathological trait in anorexia nervosa (AN). We investigated the processing of hyperactivity-related information in fifteen AN patients, 15 athletes and 15 non-athletes to examine if they represent disorder-related reward information using eye tracking. We assessed the extent of individually performed physical activity, mood, trait reward sensitivity and serum leptin levels. Results revealed a pronounced bias in overall attentional engagement toward stimuli associated with physical activity in patients and athletes as compare
