A case of glomerular lipidosis accompanied by familial combined hyperlipidemia and panhypopituitarism.

This is a report of a case of glomerular lipidosis with familial combined hyperlipidemia and panhypopituitarism. A 60-yr-old woman was admitted for evaluation of hyponatremia. Administration of hydrocortisone normalized the level of serum Na. A pituitary hormone-stimulating test and brain computed tomography revealed panhypopituitarism with an empty sella. Glucocorticoid deficiency due to secondary hypoaldosteronism was thought to have caused the Na loss. She had been treated for thyroid dysfunction and hyperlipidemia with replacement of thyroid hormone and a lipid-lowering drug. Hyperlipidemi

Nephrotic hyperlipidemia: primary abnormalities in both lipoprotein catabolism and synthesis.

One of the most prominent manifestations of the nephrotic syndrome is hyperlipidemia. Lipoprotein synthesis is increased and catabolism is reduced in nephrotic patients and animals. The observation that infusion of either albumin or dextran reduces lipid levels suggests that oncotic pressure (pi) may regulate lipogenesis. It has been postulated that prolonged plasma half-life of lipoproteins in nephrosis is a consequence of saturation of catabolic sites and is secondary to the hyperlipidemia that results from increased lipogenesis. However, the absolute rate of triglyceride catabolism is reduc

Use of captopril to reduce serum lipids in hypertensive patients with hyperlipidemia.

The effects on serum lipids of substituting captopril for other antihypertensive drugs were evaluated in 24 essential hypertensives with stable hypercholesterolemia (total cholesterol 250 to 350 mg/dL). Captopril, 50 mg bid, was substituted for one of the nondiuretic drugs the patients were already taking. Patients on a diuretic continued the same diuretic at the same dosage. After 6 months of treatment including captopril, patients returned for 3 months to their previous therapeutic scheme (rechallenge). Treatment with captopril caused a reduction in total cholesterol (-18%) and triglycerides

Research Progress on Anti-Hyperlipidemia Peptides Derived from Foods.

Hyperlipidemia is a metabolic disorder in which cholesterol (TC) and triglycerides (TGs) in the blood exceed the normal physiological levels. The incidence of the condition has continued to rise in recent years, posing a serious threat to public health. Its clinical treatment mainly relies on drug interventions, such as statins, fibrate, and niacin. Although these drugs have shown some efficacy in the treatment of hyperlipidemia, their adverse effects cannot be ignored. In contrast, naturally derived peptides have gradually become potential candidates for the prevention and treatment of hyperl

A lipid index for risk of hyperlipidemia caused by anti-retroviral drugs.

HIV-associated lipodystrophy has been reported in people taking anti-retroviral therapy (ART). Lipodystrophy can cause cardiovascular diseases, affecting the quality of life of HIV-infected individuals. In this study, we propose a pharmacological lipid index to estimate the risk of hyperlipidemia caused by anti-retroviral drugs. Lipid droplets were stained in cells treated with anti-retroviral drugs and cyclosporin A. Signal intensities of lipid droplets were plotted against the drug concentrations to obtain an isodose of 10 μM of cyclosporin A, which we call the Pharmacological Lipid Index (P

Characterization of a model to induce hyperlipidemia in feed-restricted dairy cows.

Hepatic lipidosis is a prevalent metabolic disorder, and in vivo models to study intermediary lipid metabolism are needed in dairy cows. Objectives were to apply a method to induce hyperlipidemia and characterize the responses and safety of the intervention in feed-restricted dry Holstein cows at 8 mo of gestation. It was hypothesized that infusion of tyloxapol would induce hyperlipidemia without deleterious effects on health of dairy cows. Pregnant, nonlactating parous Holstein cows (n = 33) at a mean (± standard deviation) of 234 ± 2.2 d of gestation were fed for ad libitum intake on d 1 to

Are Clinicians Aggressive Enough in Treating Diabetes-Related Hyperlipidemia in Youth?

PURPOSE OF REVIEW: Cardiovascular disease is the leading cause of death in patients with type 1 diabetes (T1D) and type 2 diabetes (T2D). Subclinical atherosclerotic changes are noted in youth with diabetes; therefore, timely identification and management of modifiable cardiovascular risk factors including hyperlipidemia is crucial. We review the current guidelines for hyperlipidemia screening and treatment in youth with T1D and T2D. We discuss the efficacy of non-pharmacological strategies including dietary modifications, exercise, and glycemic control and pharmacological therapy. We summariz

Could hyperlipidemia be a risk factor for corticobasal syndrome? - a pilot study.

INTRODUCTION: Corticobasal syndrome (CBS) is a specific clinical manifestation shared by multiple pathologies. The exact mechanism of this phenomenon remains unclear. Differential diagnosis of CBS in everyday clinical practice is challenging, as this syndrome can overlap with other entities, especially progressive supranuclear palsy Richardson-Steele phenotype (PSP-RS). Several papers have suggested a possible role of vascular pathology as a linking factor in the pathogenesis of CBS based on different neuropathologies. This paper analyses differences in the occurrence of the most common vascul

Pharmacokinetics and pharmacodynamics of HTD1801 (berberine ursodeoxycholate, BUDCA) in patients with hyperlipidemia.

BACKGROUND: Reduction in elevated serum cholesterol concentrations is important in the management of individuals at risk of atherosclerotic cardiovascular disease (ASCVD), such as myocardial infarction and thrombotic stroke. Although HMGCoA reductase inhibitors ("statins") are frequently used for this purpose, a significant proportion of patients remain at increased residual risk of ASCVD as they do not adequately address some of the associated co-morbidities such as diabetes and fatty liver disease. METHODS: A double-blind, randomized, placebo-controlled, dose ranging study was carried out t
