Bronchopulmonary carcinoids in Iceland 1955-1984. A retrospective clinical and histopathologic study.

Twenty-two cases of bronchopulmonary carcinoid tumor diagnosed in Iceland in the 30-year period 1955-1984 were analyzed. Carcinoid comprised 2% of all primary lung tumors registered in that period. The crude incidence was 0.36 cases/100,000 population/year. The patients' mean age was 48 years and 68% were female. The most common presenting symptom was recurrent pneumonia; only three patients had hemoptysis. One patient had carcinoid syndrome. Two of the 22 tumors were peripheral. Tumor size was 0.8-9 cm, mean 2.8 cm. Of the resectable bronchial tumors, 80% had invaded the pulmonary parenchyma

Navigating Challenges with Trust and Creativity: Adolescents' Experiences of COVID-19 in Iceland.

In this study, we explore the relational dimensions of resilience among adolescents in Iceland during the COVID-19 pandemic. Using the frameworks of social-ecological resilience and the embodied, social, and public child, we examine how resilience manifests through interactions with family, peers, and community. Participants employed tactical trust and creative strategies to navigate restrictions, transforming digital and physical spaces into sources of social connection. Their critical engagement with public health policies highlighted vulnerability as integral to resilience. Our findings rev

Birth weight and risk for childhood leukemia in Denmark, Sweden, Norway, and Iceland.

BACKGROUND: Compelling evidence suggests that childhood leukemia often originates in utero. Birth weight is one of the few pregnancy-related risk factors that has been associated with leukemia risk, but the association has remained poorly characterized. We conducted a population-based case-control study in Denmark, Sweden, Norway, and Iceland to investigate the association between birth weight (and other birth characteristics) and the risk of childhood leukemia. METHODS: Overall, 1905 children (aged 0-14 years) with acute lymphoblastic leukemia (ALL) and 299 children with acute myeloid leukem

Genetic Structure and Signs of Local Adaptation in Icelandic Brown Trout Populations.

Loss of anadromy in Salmonids frequently follows postglacial colonization and habitat change, a process driven by selective pressures where benefits of residency outweigh migration costs. At the end of the last Ice Age ca. 10,000 years ago, anadromous brown trout arrived in Iceland and invaded newly formed habitats. Some populations became isolated in headwaters early after the ice retreated, presumably accelerating local adaptation and the evolution of residency. In this study, we assessed the genetic relatedness and diversity of brown trout on a countrywide scale to decipher the number of un

Severe subcutaneous infection with Clostridium septicum in a herd of native Icelandic horses.

BACKGROUND: Cellulitis due to infection with clostridia has not been documented in horses in Iceland. However, clostridia are well-known pathogens in Icelandic sheep, which have traditionally shared grazing land with horses. Clostridial infections of equine muscle or subcutis following injection with medicinal products have been described in other countries but have never been reported in Iceland. In this case report, we present the first documented outbreak of subcutaneous clostridial infection in horses in Iceland following subcutaneous injection. CASE PRESENTATION: In November 2022, 16 out

The Icelandic Mutation (APP-A673T) Is Protective against Amyloid Pathology In Vivo.

A previous epidemiological study in Northern Europe showed that the A673T mutation (Icelandic mutation) in the amyloid precursor protein gene (APP) can protect against Alzheimer's disease (AD). While the effect of the A673T mutation on APP processing has been investigated primarily in vitro, its in vivo impact has not been evaluated. This is mainly because most existing AD mouse models carry the Swedish mutation. The Swedish and Icelandic mutations are both located near the β-cleavage site, and each mutation is presumed to have the opposite effect on β-cleavage. Therefore, in the AD mouse mode

Decreasing death rates and causes of death in Icelandic children-A longitudinal analysis.

BACKGROUND: Global death rate in children has been declining during the last decades worldwide, especially in high income countries. This has been attributed to several factors, including improved prenatal and perinatal care, immunisations, infection management as well as progress in diagnosis and treatment of most diseases. However, there is certainly room for further progress. The aim of the current study was to describe the changes in death rates and causes of death in Iceland, a high-income country during almost half a century. METHODS: The Causes of Death Register at The Directorate of H
