Prostate MRI segmentation is critical for accurate diagnosis and treatment planning but remains challenging due to the complex interplay between the peripheral zone's thin, irregular boundaries and the central gland's homogeneous textures, compounded by variability across imaging protocols. To address these challenges, we propose ProSeg, a novel deep learning framework featuring a specialized ProSeg block that integrates dual complementary processes: (1) anisotropic convolutions for precise peripheral zone boundary delineation and (2) cross-slice attention mechanisms for robust central gland t

Accurate fetal brain tissue segmentation and biometric measurement are essential for monitoring neurodevelopment and detecting abnormalities in utero. The Fetal Tissue Annotation (FeTA) Challenges have established robust multi-center benchmarks for evaluating state-of-the-art segmentation methods. This paper presents the results of the 2024 challenge edition, which introduced three key innovations. First, we introduced a topology-aware metric based on the Euler characteristic difference (ED) to overcome the performance plateau observed with traditional metrics like Dice or Hausdorff distance (

BACKGROUND: White matter hyperintensity (WMH) segmentation using BIANCA (Brain Intensity AbNormality Classification Algorithm) in stroke populations is complicated by vascular lesions that share T2-hyperintense signal characteristics with WMH. Whether preprocessing decisions in the treatment of lesions affect segmentation accuracy has not yet been systematically evaluated in cerebrovascular cohorts involving multiple scanners.
METHODS: We compared fixed probability thresholds and locally adaptive thresholding with LOCATE (LOCally Adaptive Threshold Estimation), and three lesion-handling appro

Multiple sclerosis (MS) is a chronic neurological disorder commonly diagnosed through magnetic resonance imaging (MRI). Manual interpretation of MRI scans is time-consuming and prone to observer variability. This study explores the use of deep learning (DL) models to automate MS lesion detection in MRI images. Four convolutional neural network (CNN) architectures-AlexNet, VGG16 pretrained on ImageNet, ResNet-10, and DenseNet-121-were utilized with slight modifications to optimize their performance for medical imaging tasks. The dataset, comprising 2831 FLAIR and T2 MRI slices from 60 patients,

BACKGROUND/OBJECTIVES: Characterizing spinal cord multiple sclerosis (MS) lesions in MRI is critical for diagnosis, monitoring, and treatment evaluation. However, current automated approaches for lesion detection and segmentation are typically designed for specific MRI contrasts or acquisition sites, limiting their generalizability in real-world clinical settings where imaging protocols vary widely. This work proposes a robust multi-site, multi-contrast segmentation framework for spinal cord lesions.
METHODS: The segmentation model was trained and evaluated on a large-scale dataset comprising

Segmenting healthy tissue structures alongside lesions in brain Magnetic Resonance Images (MRI) remains a challenge for today's algorithms due to lesion-caused disruption of the anatomy and lack of jointly labeled training datasets, where both healthy tissues and lesions are labeled on the same images. In this paper, we propose a method that is robust to lesion-caused disruptions and can be trained from disparately labeled training sets, i.e., without requiring jointly labeled samples, to automatically segment both. In contrast to prior work, we decouple healthy tissue and lesion segmentation

This paper suggests an automated system for segmentation of the Lumbo-Sacral (LS) Magnetic Resonance Imaging (MRI) of spine and evaluation of its geometrical characteristics. The LS MRI of spine is segmented into anatomical parts such as vertebrae, intervertebral discs (IVDs), canal and vertebral height and width, IVDs height and width, canal diameter, IVDs height index and signal intensity parameters are computed to facilitate automatic analysis. To overcome the subjectivity and variability that come with manual analysis, an expert-verified dataset is developed. This dataset improves clinical

Osteoarthritis (OA) is heterogeneous and involves structural changes in the whole joint, such as cartilage, meniscus/labrum, ligaments, and tendons, mainly with short T2 relaxation times. Detecting OA before the onset of irreversible changes is crucial for early proactive management and limit growing disease burden. The more recent advanced quantitative imaging techniques and deep learning (DL) algorithms in musculoskeletal imaging have shown great potential for visualizing "pre-OA." In this review, we first focus on ultrashort echo time-based magnetic resonance imaging (MRI) techniques for di

Accurately and swiftly segmenting breast tumors is significant for cancer diagnosis and treatment. Ultrasound imaging stands as one of the widely employed methods in clinical practice. However, due to challenges such as low contrast, blurred boundaries, and prevalent shadows in ultrasound images, tumor segmentation remains a daunting task. In this study, we propose BCT-Net, a network amalgamating CNN and transformer components for breast tumor segmentation. BCT-Net integrates a dual-level attention mechanism to capture more features and redefines the skip connection module. We introduce the ut

The absence of bone wall located in the jugular bulb and sigmoid sinus of the temporal bone is one of the important reasons for pulsatile tinnitus. Automatic and accurate detection of these abnormal singes in CT slices has important theoretical significance and clinical value. Due to the shortage of abnormal samples, imbalanced samples, small inter-class differences, and low interpretability, existing deep-learning methods are greatly challenged. In this paper, we proposed a sub-features orthogonal decoupling model, which can effectively disentangle the representation features into class-speci

To investigate the impact of combining the high-resolution (Hi-res) scan mode with deep learning image reconstruction (DLIR) algorithm in CT. Two phantoms (Catphan600® and Lungman, small, medium, large size) were CT scanned using combinations of Hi-res/standard mode and high-definition (HD)/standard kernels. Images were reconstructed with ASiR-V and three levels of DLIR. Spatial resolution, noise and contrast-to-noise ratio (CNR) were assessed. The radiation dose was recorded. The spatial resolution increased using Hi-res & HD. Image noise in the Catphan600® (69%) and the Lungman (10-70%) sign

Segmenting brain tumors from MRI scans is a challenging aspect of medical image analysis because of anatomical complexity, ambiguous tumor boundaries, and variability of shape. In this paper, we propose W-AGRU-Net, a new dual-stream U-Net framework that combines W-Attention mechanisms with residual connections for strong and accurate glioma segmentation. Our framework uses two asymmetric streams that have pyramid-shaped dilated convolution schemes (PDCS) for hierarchical multi-scale context capturing. The framework also includes residual units that utilize Squeeze-and-Excitation (SE) blocks fo

This study aims to develop a novel segmentation method that utilizes spatio-temporal information for segmenting two-dimensional thyroid nodules on dynamic contrast-enhanced magnetic resonance imaging (DCE-MRI). Leveraging medical morphology knowledge of the thyroid gland, we designed a semi-supervised segmentation model that first segments the thyroid gland, guiding the model to focus exclusively on the thyroid region. This approach reduces the complexity of nodule segmentation by filtering out irrelevant regions and artifacts. Then, we introduced a method to explicitly extract temporal inform

Machine learning-based stroke lesion segmentation models are widely used in biomedical imaging, but their ability to detect treatment effects remains largely unexplored. Gaussian Mixture Models (GMM) and nnU-Net are among the most prominent and well-established segmentation workflows. GMM has been widely used for probabilistic tissue classification for decades, while nnU-Net has established itself as a leading deep learning framework for biomedical image segmentation, with hundreds of applications in preclinical and clinical research. Despite their widespread adoption, these methods are typica

Cardiovascular magnetic resonance (CMR) is an established imaging modality with proven utility in assessing cardiovascular diseases. The ability of CMR to characterize myocardial tissue using T1- and T2-weighted imaging, parametric mapping, and late gadolinium enhancement has allowed for the non-invasive identification of specific pathologies not previously possible with modalities like echocardiography. However, CMR examinations are lengthy and technically complex, requiring multiple pulse sequences and different anatomical planes to comprehensively assess myocardial structure, function, and

Breast density is a risk factor associated with the development of breast cancer. Usually, breast density is assessed on two dimensional (2D) mammograms using the American College of Radiology (ACR) classification. Magnetic resonance imaging (MRI) is a non-radiation based examination method, which offers a three dimensional (3D) alternative to classical 2D mammograms. We propose a new framework for automated breast density calculation on MRI data. Our framework consists of three steps. First, a recently developed method for simultaneous intensity inhomogeneity correction and breast tissue and

OBJECTIVE: 68-keV monoenergetic images from dual-energy CT are often compared with conventional 120-kVp CT, but quantitative performance may depend on phantom size, reconstruction method, and dose settings. We performed a technical phantom-based comparison of 68-keV monoenergetic, routine-dose, and low-dose 120-kVp CT for calcium-mimicking inserts.

Alzheimer's disease (AD) develops long before clinical symptoms appear, which highlights the need for early diagnostic tools. Current diagnostic techniques often miss the subtle structural brain changes in the early stages of AD, creating a critical gap in timely medical intervention. This paper proposes a combined modified Transformer Encoder-Convolutional Neural Network (CNN) architecture for AD detection using Magnetic Resonance Imaging (MRI). Data augmentation techniques, including rotation, zooming, brightness adjustment and flipping, are applied to increase the number of training images.
