Predicting degree of myelination based on diffusion tensor imagining of canines with mucopolysaccharidosis type I.

OBJECTIVE: This study examined the effect of mucopolysaccharidosis (MPS) type 1 on diffusion tensor imaging (DTI) metrics in the canine brain. We hypothesized 1) white matter regions in the MPS brain would show decreased fractional anisotropy (FA) and increased radial diffusivity (RD) compared to the same regions in normal brain, 2) compared to FA, RD would more closely correlate with myelin density and fiber coherence, and 3) DTI and histological data from the normal brain could be used to accurately predict degree of myelination in the MPS brain using DTI metrics. METHODS: We performed DTI

Lateral posterior parietal activity during source memory judgments of perceived and imagined events.

Memories of real and imagined events are qualitatively distinct, and therefore may be supported by different neural mechanisms. In the present study, we tested whether brain regions are differentially activated during source discriminations of perceived versus imagined events. During the encoding phase, subjects perceived and imagined images of objects in response to a cue word. Then, at test, they made judgments about whether old and new cue words corresponded to items that were previously perceived or imagined, or if they were new. The results demonstrated that the left lateral posterior par

Essential roles for stat92E in expanding and patterning the proximodistal axis of the Drosophila wing imaginal disc.

The Drosophila wing imaginal disc is subdivided along the proximodistal axis into the distal pouch, the hinge, the surrounding pleura, and the notum. While the genetic pathways that specify the identity of each of these domains have been well studied, the mechanisms that coordinate the relative expansion of these domains are not well understood. Here we investigated the role of the stat92E signal transducer and activator of transcription in wing proximodistal development. We find that stat92E is active ubiquitously in early wing imaginal discs, where it acts to inhibit the induction of ectopic

Imagined tool-use in near and far space modulates the extra-striate body area.

Active tool-use can result in the incorporation of the tool into the body schema, e.g., the representation of the arm is enlarged according to tool length. This modification even influences the processing of space: using a long tool leads to a remapping of far space as near space. We here further investigate the interaction of the neural representations of the human body, tool use, and spatial domain. Functional magnetic resonance imaging (fMRI) was performed in twelve right-handed healthy individuals while they imagined moving a cylinder towards a target position in far or near space by menta

Moving through imagined space: Mentally simulating locomotion during spatial description reading.

Readers mentally simulate the perceptual and motoric elements related through text. Sound is one perceptual characteristic of these embodied simulations that has received little attention. Two experiments tested whether movement sounds (walking vs. running) or metronome pulses (fast vs. slow) would modulate reading speed and memory for two different types of spatial descriptions, route and survey. Route descriptions describe environments from a first-person, ground-level perspective whereas survey descriptions use an aerial overview perspective. Experiment 1 demonstrated that route description

[Thrombocytosis in patients treated with low-molecular-weight heparin: more common than imagined?].

BACKGROUND: Use of low-molecular-weight heparin (LMWH) is widespread. Clinicians are well aware of LMWH-related thrombopenia, but reports of thrombocytosis are more exceptional. We evaluated prospectively the incidence of thrombocytosis (>450 G/L) in the general medicine setting among patients needing LMWH treatment. PATIENTS AND METHODS: We followed for the duration of treatment 95 consecutive patients receiving LMWH and managed in a general medicine setting. Thrombotic events, bleeding and platelet counts were noted. RESULTS: Among the 95 patients, 29 developed thrombocytosis during the fo

Functional MRI mapping of occipital and frontal cortical activity during voluntary and imagined saccades.

We investigated the activation of frontal and occipital cortical areas in 14 normal volunteers during voluntary saccades in light or dark and during imagined saccades using functional magnetic resonance imaging (FMRI) with electro-oculogram monitoring. Voluntary saccades in light or dark and imagined saccades led to a significant activation (p < 0.005) of the precentral and posterior medial frontal gyrus (frontal eye field). The medial part of the superior frontal gyrus (supplementary eye field) also showed significant activity during voluntary saccades in all subjects, but only in four subjec

Pattern formation in the imaginal wing disc of Drosophila melanogaster: fate map, regeneration and duplication.

Fragments of the wing disc of Drosophila (fig. 2) were either injected into mature third instar larvae for immediate metamorphosis, or cultured in adult abdomens for seven days before being transferred to larvae for metamorphosis. The structures differentiated during metamorphosis were then analysed. The results of the first series of experiments were used to construct an accurate fate map of the disc, and those of the second series were used to determine the regenerative properties of the disc. The fate map (fig. 7) shows presumptive proximal parts (notum, pleura, and dorsal and ventral hinge

Constant Joseph Desbordes' painting of Jean-Louis Alibert administering the smallpox vaccine ("La Vaccine"): An historic vaccination or artistic imagination?

In 1822, France's Ministry of the Interior, concerned about dropping vaccination rates among the population, commissioned the French artist Constant Joseph Desbordes (1761-1828) to create an artwork that would educate the public about the benefits of the smallpox vaccine. The painting that resulted is entitled: "La Vaccine" ("The Cowpox Inoculation") and a copy of it is entitled "La Vaccine au Chateau de Liancourt" ("Performing the Vaccination against Smallpox in the Chateau of Liancourt").The highlight of the painting is its central figure, one of France's most distinguished physicians, Jean-

The excitability of the human motor cortex increases during execution and mental imagination of sequential but not repetitive finger movements.

Motor potentials (MEPs) evoked by focal (figure-of-eight coil) transcranial magnetic stimulation of the left motor cortex were recorded from the right opponens pollicis (OP) and flexor digitorum superficialis (FDS) of 14 normal subjects during different motor tasks. Changes in motor cortical excitability under behavioural conditions presumably connected with premotor and supplementary motor area (SMA) activation were investigated by comparing the size of the MEPs obtained during: (1) rest, (2) mental calculus, (3) repetitive left thumb-to-index opposition, (4) mental simulation of the same tas

The power of imagery: examining the prevalence of imagination-based hotspots after a traumatic event in the Grenfell Health and Wellbeing Service.

BACKGROUND: Intrusive re-experiencing of traumatic events is a cornerstone of post-traumatic stress disorder (PTSD). Clinicians notice that clients also experience intrusive mental images of what they think might happen during a traumatic event. As mental imagery has a powerful impact on emotion, imagination-based imagery may be implicated in the peaks of distress ('hotspots') during a trauma. AIMS: A data-only study was undertaken of cognitive therapy for PTSD 'hotspot' charts used by Grenfell Health and Wellbeing Service clinicians after the Grenfell fire disaster. The aim was to establish

Cognitive Versus Software-based Fusion Targeted Biopsy for the Diagnosis of Clinically Significant Prostate Cancer: A Multicenter, Randomized, Noninferiority Trial (IMAGINATION).

BACKGROUND: Magnetic resonance imaging-targeted prostate biopsy relies heavily on costly software-fusion platforms, limiting global accessibility. OBJECTIVE: We aimed to determine whether cognitive fusion (mental registration) is noninferior to software-based fusion targeted biopsy for detecting clinically significant prostate cancer (csPCa). DESIGN, SETTING, AND PARTICIPANTS: This multicenter, randomized, blinded, noninferiority trial enrolled 648 predominantly biopsy-naive men (prostate-specific antigen 4-20 ng/ml; Prostate Imaging Reporting and Data System ≥3) at nine centers in China. Imaginative play for inclusion: evaluating the young dragons tabletop role-playing intervention in UK schools.

BACKGROUND: School exclusion in England disproportionately affects pupils with social, emotional, and mental health needs. Tabletop roleplaying games (TTRPGs) may strengthen social emotional learning but are rarely evaluated in UK state schools. Young Dragons, a Dungeons & Dragons based programme, was developed to support emotional regulation, teamwork, and engagement among pupils at risk of exclusion in two London boroughs. METHODS: A convergent mixed methods realist evaluation was delivered across ten schools. Pupils aged 9-16 attended weekly one-hour sessions for 6-8 weeks in small, consis

Shedding light on imagined scents: an fNIRS feasibility study of olfactory mental imagery and semantic cueing.

Mental imagery is the ability to evoke sensory experiences without a corresponding stimulus, with established roles in memory, cognition, and behavior across multiple sensory modalities. Whilst visual and auditory imagery have been extensively characterized using neuroimaging, olfactory imagery remains comparatively understudied despite representing a particularly compelling target for investigation. Unlike other sensory systems, olfactory information projects directly to limbic structures including the amygdala and hippocampus without thalamic relay, providing a neurobiological basis for the

A political economy of hope: Materialisations of social class and inequity in women's imaginings of alcohol (free) futures.

This paper explores how social class shapes affective experiences, integrating the sociology of emotions with political economic theory to examine how systems of dis/advantage influence women's hopes and hopefulness about their futures and the potential for reductions in alcohol consumption. Using 149 open-ended qualitative interviews with 86 women across three studies, we analyse 'hope stories' to investigate how capacities for hopefulness are embedded in the social practices and temporal orientations of gender and class. Interviews focused on the role of alcohol in daily life and perceptions

Imagined speech event detection from electrocorticography and its transfer between speech modes and subjects.

Speech brain-computer interfaces aim to support communication-impaired patients by translating neural signals into speech. While impressive progress was achieved in decoding performed, perceived and attempted speech, imagined speech remains elusive, mainly due to the absence of behavioral output. Nevertheless, imagined speech is advantageous since it does not depend on any articulator movements that might become impaired or even lost throughout the stages of a neurodegenerative disease. In this study, we analyzed electrocortigraphy data recorded from 16 participants in response to 3 speech mod

Neural subspaces of imagined movements in parietal cortex remain stable over several years in humans.

Objective.A crucial goal in brain-machine interfacing is the long-term stability of neural decoding performance, ideally without regular retraining. Long-term stability has only been previously demonstrated in non-human primate experiments and only in primary sensorimotor cortices. Here we extend previous methods to determine long-term stability in humans by identifying and aligning low-dimensional structures in neural data.Approach.Over a period of 1106 and 871 d respectively, two participants completed an imagined center-out reaching task. The longitudinal accuracy between all day pairs was
