India is the largest milk producer contributing 25 % to the global production. From a mere 17 million tons (MTs) in 1951, milk production increased to an inconceivable 230 MTs in 2023. Nondescript cows and buffaloes were the main milk animals. Since 1965, nationwide programs for cross breeding native cattle with exotic milk breeds such as Jersey, Holstein Friesian (HF) and Brown Swiss (BS) and upgradation of buffalo breeds along with disease eradication, feed and fodder development and provision of veterinary and extension services were implemented. Now 75 % of the milk in India is produced by

Leptospirosis, a formidable zoonotic threat spawned by Leptospira, plagues tropical and subtropical realms. This study delves deep into tropical Indian states, namely, Kerala, Gujarat, Karnataka, Maharashtra, and Tamil Nadu, unraveling the dynamics of leptospirosis through a comprehensive mathematical model that embraces temperature-driven growth rates of Leptospira. Sensitivity analysis and parameter estimation techniques fortified the model's accuracy, unraveling the factors shaping leptospirosis transmission. Notably, the numerical results highlight the significant impact of rainfall, fishi

Cryptosporidiosis is caused by infection with a coccidian parasite belonging to the genus Cryptosporidium. Initially, human cryptosporidiosis was believed to be caused only by one species, but since the advent of molecular studies, 15 more species have been discovered to cause this infection. Among them, Cryptosporidium hominis and Cryptosporidium parvum are the most common species involved. This mainly affects children and causes diarrhea in most cases. It is mainly diagnosed by microscopy, especially in low-middle-income countries. This review covers the epidemiology, life cycle, risk factor

BACKGROUND: Tapentadol is a synthetic opioid analgesic available in India since 2011. International evidence suggests a low risk of abuse and diversion. Our study aims to question this perception in Indian context.
METHOD: We report the trend and profile of Tapentadol abuse cases that were treated at a tertiary level addiction treatment centre in southern India. We also describe the ease of repurposing oral tablets of Tapentadol into an injection. At the national level, we have examined the temporal and spatial trends of online interest in Tapentadol and compared it with a non-opioid drug Ila

Bovine tuberculosis (bTB) is a chronic illness in animals, especially in cattle, leading to loss in the productivity and signifies a crucial public health risk. Regardless of the zoonotic threat and significant economic costs associated with the disease, precise estimates of bTB prevalence are deficient in many countries, including India, where national control programs are yet to be instigated. The true burden of the disease remains unknown due to lack of routine surveillance data from most of the developing countries. India is progressing well towards attaining the End TB goal, yet bTB conti

Haemoglobinopathies particularly haemoglobin S and E (HbS, HbE) and β-thalassaemia are important challenges for tribal populations in India. The HbS, HbE and β-thalassaemia genes are variably distributed across various tribal populations of India. HbE is mainly restricted in tribals of North-East, West Bengal, Odisha and those in Andaman and Nicobar islands. HbS has more extensive distribution in the country (10-40% trait frequency) and the homozygotes and double heterozygotes present with a wide array of morbidities. The morbidity varies greatly in different areas of the country due to differ

BACKGROUND: Melioidosis caused by the gram-negative bacterium Burkholderia pseudomallei is endemic in Southeast Asia but may be under-diagnosed and under-reported in the Indian subcontinent. This study was undertaken to analyse the clinical presentation and epidemiological risk factors for melioidosis in India.
METHODS: We carried out a retrospective study of 32 culture proven cases of melioidosis at a tertiary care hospital in South India between 2005 and 2010.
RESULTS: Thirty two culture confirmed cases of melioidosis were included in the study. Patient age varied from 4 to 60 years with a

Chronic diseases (eg, cardiovascular diseases, mental health disorders, diabetes, and cancer) and injuries are the leading causes of death and disability in India, and we project pronounced increases in their contribution to the burden of disease during the next 25 years. Most chronic diseases are equally prevalent in poor and rural populations and often occur together. Although a wide range of cost-effective primary and secondary prevention strategies are available, their coverage is generally low, especially in poor and rural populations. Much of the care for chronic diseases and injuries is

Genetic counselling in tribals unlike general population residing in cities and near villages is a difficult task due of their lower literacy and poor socio-economic status. However, sustained effort is essential with a close interaction in the local language, certain misbeliefs need to be removed gradually taking into account their socio-cultural background. The present communication deals with our experience in counselling for haemoglobinopathies during Neonatal Screening Programme undertaken for sickle cell disease in Kalahandi district of Orissa and Community Screening Programmes in primit

Firsthand accounts of the Black Death in Europe and the Middle East and many subsequent historians have assumed that the pandemic originated in Asia and ravaged China and India before reaching the West. One reason for this conviction among modern historians is that the plague in the nineteenth century originated and did its worst damage in these countries. But a close examination of the sources on the Delhi Sultanate and the Yuan Dynasty provides no evidence of any serious epidemic in fourteenth-century India and no specific evidence of plague among the many troubles that afflicted fourteenth-

Parasitic zoonotic diseases are prevalent throughout India at varying rates. First reports of zoonotic parasites and new emerging diseases have been recorded in both the human and animal populations in recent decades. The prevalence of zoonotic parasites is likely to be an underestimate, owing to the lack of proper surveillance and the shortage of information about the existence of asymptomatic animal carriers. Emergence of diseases such as human echinococcosis/hydatidosis, neurocysticercosis, cryptosporidiosis and toxoplasmosis in those with acquired immune deficiency syndrome, together with

Leptospirosis is an emerging zoonosis. In the Andaman Islands during the early twentieth century, it occurred in the penal settlements of the British India Administration, mostly as Weil's disease, an acute febrile illness with hepato-renal complications. It was caused by leptospires belonging to groups Akiamy A and Andamans A. After the 1930s nothing further is known regarding the disease until the late 1980s, when Andaman haemorrhagic fever (AHF), a mysterious illness with the majority of cases presenting pulmonary involvement, appeared. AHF was later identified as leptospirosis and severe p

The clinical course of human immunodeficiency virus (HIV) disease and pattern of opportunistic infections varies from patient to patient and from country to country. The clinical profile of HIV disease in India includes a wide range of conditions like tuberculosis, cryptococcal meningitis, popular pruritic eruptions, and cytomegalovirus retinitis, among others. Tuberculosis is the most common opportunistic infection in Indian patients with HIV. Occurrence of various AIDS-associated illnesses determines disease progression. Mean survival time of Indian patients after diagnosis of HIV is 92 mont

Japanese encephalitis is demonstrated to be a significant public health problem in India and throughout Asia. JE primarily affects children between the ages of one and 15 years. Of those who contract the disease, approximately 70% either die or are left with a long-term neurological disability. JE vaccines have existed for a very long time, however due to cost and unstable supply, they have not been able to meet the needs of developing country health systems. In addition, alternative JE control measures have proven insufficient to control disease. As a result, 68 percent of babies born in the
