Treatment of o-allyl phenols with catalytic NIS-PPh3 affords the corresponding spirodihydrobenzofuran derivatives in high yield with high regio- and total stereoselectivity under mild conditions. These results were utilized to achieve the first total synthesis of the protein kinase C inhibitor corallidictyal D starting from α-ionone.

The first method is chiral auxiliary-based and utilizes aldol reactions of N-acetyl thiazolidinethiones followed by a malonate displacement/decarboxylation reaction. The second approach uses the asymmetric catalytic Mukaiyama additions of dienolate nucleophile equivalents developed by Carreira and Sato. Finally, tin-substituted intermediates, prepared by either of these routes, can serve as advanced general precursors of kavalactone derivatives via Pd(0)-catalyzed Stille couplings with aryl halides.

A synthetic approach towards 1'-C-branched N,O-nucleosides is reported, based on 1,3-dipolar cycloaddition of ethoxycarbonylnitrone. A method has been developed for the simultaneous gas chromatographic determination of propranolol or metoprolol and butyrophenones butyrophenones in human plasma in vitro. The drugs were extracted from plasma by solid-phase extraction. Calibration graphs were linear in the 50-300-ng/mL range. The recovery of the compounds was 80-90%. The sensitivity of the method was adequate for the determination of the drugs at toxic concentrations and at therapeutic levels. It is a simple, rapid, and reproducible method for the simultaneous determination of propranolol or metoprolol and some butyrophenones.

A rapid and accurate determination of tetracycline antibiotics in human serum by reversed-phase high-performance liquid chromatography with fluorescence detection has been developed, based on protein precipitation in serum. Various reagents for precipitation were investigated, and 24% trichloroacetic acid in methanolic solution gave the maximum recovery (at least 94.3%) and interference-free chromatograms of different three tetracyclines. Various metals have been shown to inhibit porcine brain lipoamidase activity at 0.1 mM, but not ferrous and ferric ions. Based on an extension of Vierordt's method and in continuation of earlier work, the simultaneous analysis of a ternary mixture of meclozine hydrochloride, pyridoxine hydrochloride and caffeine is discussed. Using 0.01 M methanolic sodium hydroxide as the solvent, the absorbance of the solution of the mixture is recorded at 230, 273 and 307 nm. The concentration of each component is determined by the solution of three simultaneous equations.

The Monier-Williams distillation procedure has a long history of successful use for determining sulfite in fruit products and wine; however, a systematic evaluation of its accuracy and precision with other food matrices has not been undertaken. We found that the Monier-Williams distillation yielded greater than 90% recovery of sulfite added to foods such as table grapes, hominy, dried mangoes, and lemon juice.
