How do expectant fathers respond to infant cry? Examining brain and behavioral responses and the moderating role of testosterone.

Expectant parents' responses to infant cry may indicate future risk and resiliency in the parent-child relationship. Most studies of parental reactivity to infant cry have focused on mothers, and few studies have focused on expectant fathers, although fathers make important contributions to parenting. Additionally, although different responses to infant cry (behavioral, psychological and neural) are hypothesized to track together, few studies have analyzed them concurrently. The current investigation aimed to address these gaps by characterizing multimodal responses to infant cry within expect

Forty Years of Assessing Neurodevelopmental and Behavioral Effects of Prenatal Alcohol Exposure in Infants: What Have We Learned?

It has been known for over 4 decades that prenatal alcohol exposure (PAE) can adversely affect neurodevelopment and behavior (NDB). Yet, early detection of altered NDB due to PAE continues to present a major clinical challenge. Identification of altered NDB in the first 2 years of life, before higher-order cognitive processes develop, invites early interventions for affected children to improve long-term outcomes. Studies published in English from January of 1980 to July of 2018 were identified in PubMed/MEDLINE. The review focused on prospective birth cohort studies which used standardized ND

Patterns of looking behavior in full-term and low birth weight infants at 40 weeks post-conceptional age.

Given the usefulness of visual behavior as an assessment method in older infants, a simple method of visual behavioral evaluation applicable in clinical settings was utilized to gather descriptive data on 42 infants at term. Using an "infant control" method for determining the duration of stimulus presentation, a series of four patterned targets was presented to 25 healthy full-term (FT) and 17 low birth weight (LBW) infants at 40 weeks postconceptional age. Infants were examined in their nursery cribs, and each stimulus was presented until the infant reached a criterion of a 50% or greater de

Descriptive Longitudinal Pilot Study: Behaviors Surrounding Feeding of Preterm Infants Who Received Extended Tube Feedings.

PURPOSE: Seventy percent of preterm infants experience challenges with oral feeding and commonly require tube feedings. Yet it is not well understood how these behaviors change over time while infants are receiving tube feedings only and through the transition to oral feedings. The purpose of this pilot study was to describe the change in behaviors surrounding feeding and with respect to advancing Post Menstrual Age (PMA) for preterm infants who received extended tube feedings during hospitalization in the Neonatal Intensive Care Unit (NICU). METHODS AND MEASURES: A prospective pilot study wa

White matter integrity moderates the relation between experienced childhood maltreatment and fathers' behavioral response to infant crying.

The ability to provide appropriate responses to infant distress is vital to paternal care, but may be affected by fathers' experiences of childhood maltreatment. Detrimental effects of childhood maltreatment have been found in the adult brain's white matter fibers, accompanied with impaired emotional and cognitive functioning. In the current study (N = 121), we examined new and expectant fathers' childhood maltreatment experiences (i.e. emotional and physical abuse and neglect), current behavioral responses (i.e. handgrip force) to infant cry sounds, and white matter integrity using diffusion

Depression-Like Adult Behaviors may be a Long-Term Result of Experimental Pneumococcal Meningitis in Wistar Rats Infants.

Pneumococcal meningitis is a life-threatening infection of the central nervous system (CNS) with a high mortality rate. In addition to causing severe neurological sequelae infectious diseases of the CNS can play a significant role in the pathogenesis of neuropsychiatric disorders. In this study infant Wistar rats, postnatal day 11, received intracerebroventricular (i.c.v.) either artificial cerebrospinal fluid (CSF) or a Streptococcus pneumoniae suspension to a concentration of 1 × 106 colony-forming units (CFU). 18 h later animals received antibiotic treatment as usual during 7 days. Maternal cocaine addiction and fetal behavioral state. I: A human model for the study of sudden infant death syndrome.

Abnormalities of respiratory regulation, such as apnea and abnormal hypoxic arousal during sleep, are mechanistic in the pathophysiology of SIDS. In utero cocaine exposure is associated with poor head growth, abnormal neurodevelopment, and an increased incidence of sudden, unexplained death, suggesting that in utero cocaine exposure disrupts the central regulation of breathing. It is likely that this disruption is due to altered CNS maturation. Indeed, cocaine alters norepinephrine metabolism within the locus coeruleus, important in arousal from sleep, suggesting that the increased incidence o

Correction Factor Evaluation and Between-System Comparison of Behavioral Threshold Predictions From Auditory Brainstem Response Measures in Infants.

PURPOSE: Auditory brainstem response (ABR) thresholds are corrected to estimate behavioral thresholds in infants. Corrections were validated, and a comparison of behavioral threshold estimates between systems was conducted to inform equipment transition and protocols in Ontario, Canada. METHOD: In Study 1, a retrospective file review was conducted. ABR threshold estimates from 84 infants with hearing loss were compared to behavioral thresholds to validate the accuracy of the ABR corrections applied in the Ontario Infant Hearing Program since 2016. Study 2 examined the precision of two differe

Mother-to-infant bonding difficulties are associated with future maternal depression and child-maltreatment behaviors: A Japanese nationwide longitudinal study.

BACKGROUND: Mother-to-infant bonding difficulties (MIBD) are considered risk factors for postpartum depression and child-maltreatment behaviors. However, few longitudinal studies have examined this hypothesis. This study aims to explore the relationship between MIBD and subsequent maternal depression and child-maltreatment behaviors using longitudinal data from a 2021 Japanese nationwide survey. METHODS: We studied 658 first-time mothers who had given birth within the past year and had not reported postpartum depression or child-maltreatment behaviors at baseline. The Japanese version of Moth

Gene Therapy in Combination with Nitrogen Scavenger Pretreatment Corrects Biochemical and Behavioral Abnormalities of Infant Citrullinemia Type 1 Mice.

Citrullinemia type I (CTLN1) is a rare autosomal recessive disorder caused by mutations in the gene encoding argininosuccinate synthetase 1 (ASS1) that catalyzes the third step of the urea cycle. CTLN1 patients suffer from impaired elimination of nitrogen, which leads to neurotoxic levels of circulating ammonia and urea cycle byproducts that may cause severe metabolic encephalopathy, death or irreversible brain damage. Standard of care (SOC) of CTLN1 consists of daily nitrogen-scavenger administration, but patients remain at risk of life-threatening decompensations. We evaluated the therapeuti
