Social differences in late fetal death and infant mortality in Sweden 1985-86.

Social differences in late fetal death and infant mortality were examined in a population-based prospective study. All singletons born to Nordic citizens in Sweden 1985-86 were included, 185,156 births in all. The overall rates of late fetal death and infant mortality were 3.5 and 5.3 per 1000 respectively. Socio-economic status of the household (SES) and mothers' education were used as social indicators. Logistic regression analyses showed significant odds ratios between 1.3 and 1.8 for late fetal death for blue-collar workers and women with less than 12 years education. The analyses of neona

Birth weight and the effects of birth spacing and breastfeeding on infant mortality.

Analyses previously reported, based on data from the World Fertility Survey (WFS), are replicated here with data from the Malaysian Family Life Survey. Comparison of results, when data limitations inherent in the World Fertility Surveys are reproduced or relaxed, suggests that these limitations cause little distortion, and thus bolsters confidence in the validity of results based on WFS data in which these limitations are inescapable. Generalizations based on the present investigation and on the body of previous work that it tends to validate are presented. Most significantly, these include th

Matched case-control study of air pollution and infant mortality in North Carolina.

BACKGROUND: Infant mortality is an indicator of overall population health but has been evaluated in relatively few studies of air pollution. We estimated associations between postnatal exposure to air pollution and postneonatal infant mortality in a North Carolina birth cohort. METHODS: We identified cases of infant mortality with dates of birth between 2003 and 2015. For each case, we randomly selected 10 controls from at-risk infants without replacement, matched on year of birth and geographic region. Air pollutant concentrations - fine particulate matter (PM2.5); 5 PM2.5 components; nitrog

Maternal opioid use disorder and infant mortality in Wisconsin, United States, 2010-2018.

OBJECTIVE: The difference in infant health outcomes by maternal opioid use disorder (OUD) status is understudied. We measured the association between maternal OUD during pregnancy and infant mortality and investigated whether this association differs by infant neonatal opioid withdrawal syndrome (NOWS) or maternal receipt of medication for OUD (MOUD) during pregnancy. METHODS: We sampled 204,543 Medicaid-paid births from Wisconsin, United States (2010-2018). The primary exposure was any maternal OUD during pregnancy. We also stratified this exposure on NOWS diagnosis (no OUD; OUD without NOWS

Trends of extreme hyperbilirubinemia related infant mortality in select European countries (1990-2019).

BACKGROUND: Limited data exist on population-level mortality outcomes related to extreme neonatal hyperbilirubinemia (EHB) and this study examines trends in annual infant mortality rate (IMR) attributed to hemolytic and perinatal jaundice among Germany, France, Italy, Portugal, Greece and Spain from 1990 to 2019. METHODS: Data on annual incident cases and disability-adjusted life years were collected from the 2019 Global Burden of Disease study. Live birth cohort data were sourced from UN World Population Prospects. We quantified temporal trends, with relative percent changes. Average annual

Estimates of congenital cytomegalovirus-attributable infant mortality in high-income countries: A review.

As many as 5%-10% of infants with symptomatic congenital cytomegalovirus (cCMV) disease, or 0.4%-0.8% of all liveborn infants with cCMV infection, die in early infancy in high-income countries. However, estimates are uncertain due to several potential biases that can result from data limitations and study designs. First, infants with cCMV infections who die prior to diagnosis, which usually occurs at 1-4 weeks after birth, may be excluded from both the count of deaths and the denominator of cCMV births, resulting in left truncation and immortal time biases. These 'biases' are features of the d

[Epidemiological difference could explain the higher infant mortality in Chile compared with Cuba].

INTRODUCTION: Cuba has the lowest infant mortality rate in Latin America, while Chile has an infant mortality rate above the average of Organization for Economic Cooperation and Development (OECD) countries. OBJECTIVE: To compare the epidemiology of infant mortality between Chile and Cuba in order to find characteristics that may explain the differences found. METHOD: Comparative analysis between Chile and Cuba of infant mortality rate, causes of mortality, live birth weight, and maternal age, in 2015. RESULTS: Cuba had a lower infant, neonatal, early and late mortality than Chile, with no

Vitamin A: its many roles-from vision and synaptic plasticity to infant mortality.

The recognition that a dietary factor is essential to maintain good and sensitive vision as well as overall health goes back over 3,000 years to the ancient Egyptians. With the discovery of the vitamins at the turn of the twentieth century, fat-soluble vitamin A was soon shown to be the essential factor. In the first half of the twentieth century, the role vitamin A plays in vision, as precursor to the light-sensitive visual pigment molecules in the photoreceptors was elegantly worked out, especially by George Wald and his colleagues. Beginning in the 1960s, with the recognition of the active

[Infant mortality from congenital malformations in Chile: temporal and spatial analysis, 1997-2011].

OBJECTIVE: To analyze the spatial and temporal distribution (1997-2011) of infant mortality resulting from congenital malformations (CM) in Chile. METHODS: Data on births and deaths among infants aged less than one year using ICD-10 coding were obtained from the National Statistics Institute. The percentage of deaths from CM (PD-CM) and the infant mortality rate from CM (IMR-CM) during three different periods (1997-2001, 2002-2009, 2007-2011) were estimated for Chile's administrative and natural regions (Norte Grande, Norte Chico, Central, Austral, and Sur), broken down by systems (nervous, c

When bad mothers lose good babies: understanding fetal and infant mortality case reviews.

This article examines how the practices of the Fetal and Infant Mortality Review-Case Review Team (FIMR CRT) in "Florida City" constructs particular types of maternal and fetal subjects and how these narratives about fetal and infant death reflect particular discourses about "bad mothers" and "good babies." I argue that the very methods of the Florida City FIMR committee structure the types of conversations and, in effect, judgments that can be made about women who experience a fetal or neonatal death. In addition, I examine how many of these ideas resonate with the discourses around fetal rig

Risk factors for diarrhea-associated infant mortality in the United States, 2005-2007.

BACKGROUND: Diarrhea-associated deaths among US children increased from the mid-1980s through 2006, particularly among infants. Understanding risk factors for diarrhea-associated death could improve prevention strategies. METHODS: Records of singleton infants with diarrhea listed anywhere on the death certificate were selected from the US Linked Birth/Infant Death data for the period, 2005 to 2007; characteristics of these infants were compared with those of infants who survived their first year. RESULTS: During 2005 to 2007, 1087 diarrhea-associated infant deaths were reported; 86% occurred

The 2003 annual report of the Regional Infant and Child Mortality Review Committee.

The annual report of the Regional Infant and Child Mortality Review Committee (RICMRC) is attached. This Committee has as its mission the review of infant and child deaths so that information can be transformed into action to protect young lives. The 2003 review area includes South Dakota's Minnehaha, Turner, Lincoln, Moody, Lake, McCook, and Union Counties. In 2003 there was one death in this region due to Sudden Infant Death Syndrome (SIDS), plus two infant deaths listed as undetermined that could potentially represent SIDS. Two of these three deaths had potential risk factors of soft beddin

The evolution of fetal and infant mortality review as a public health strategy.

Infant mortality review (IMR), the forerunner of fetal and infant mortality review (FIMR), emerged at the national level in the mid-1980s as a promising method to improve understanding of local factors contributing to infant mortality and to motivate community response. Building on federal efforts to enhance data capacity and early state and local infant mortality case review studies, the federal Maternal and Child Health Bureau (MCHB) initiated its IMR Program in 1988. Key actions taken to refine and diffuse the IMR/FIMR method include forging a public-private partnership between MCHB and the

The increasing racial disparity in infant mortality: respiratory distress syndrome and other causes.

Although substantial declines in infant mortality rates have occurred across racial/ethnic groups, there has been a marked increase in relative black-white disparity in the risk of infant death over the past two decades. The objective of our analysis was to gain insight into the reasons for this growing inequality on the basis of data from linked cohort files for 1989-1990 and 1995-1998. We found a nationwide reversal from a survival advantage to a survival disadvantage for blacks with respect to respiratory distress syndrome over this period. The results are consistent with the view that the

Preterm birth, stillbirth and infant mortality among triplet births in Canada, 1985-96.

Recent increases in the frequency of multiple births and simultaneous increases in preterm birth among multiple births have focused attention on such births. However, most previous studies have examined twins rather than higher-order multiples. We carried out a study to examine rates and trends in preterm birth and in gestational age-specific fetal and infant mortality among triplet births in Canada. We used data from the stillbirth, live birth and mortality files of Statistics Canada for the years 1985-97. All births in Canada (excluding those occurring in Ontario and Newfoundland) were inclu

Birth spacing and infant mortality: evidence for eighteenth and nineteenth century German villages.

Data from an historical population in which fertility control was minimal and modern health services were mostly unavailable are used to show that there appears to have been a strong association between previous birth interval length and infant mortality, especially when the previous child survived. Although only imperfect proxies for breast-feeding practices and other potentially confounding factors are available for this population, the results suggest that the association between previous interval length and infant mortality in this population is not solely, or primarily, a function of diff

[Infant mortality and its causes in a sub-district of the Ivory Coast].

The authors studied the infant mortality, between 0 and 30 months of age, in a sub-district in an eastern part of Ivory Coast with a population of 240,000 inhabitants. They recorded 103 deaths, i.e. an infant mortality rate of 29,4 p.c.. Tetanus is the main factor in 10 cases, 8 of them being neonatal. These deaths are caused by the lack of care at the umbilical cord, but not by the lack of medical infrastructure. Other causes are malaria (21), undernutrition (12), meningitidis (10), diarrhea (9), pneumopathy (7), endogenous and obstetrical causes (24).
