[A painful inflammation of the thyroid].

Four women aged 30, 29, 52 and 43 years presented with what appeared to be subacute thyroiditis (De Quervain's thyroiditis). This disease is characterized by fatigue, a painful thyroid gland and thyrotoxic manifestations. The diagnosis is further based on a high erythrocyte sedimentation rate and low tracer uptake during thyroid scintigraphy. Only the first patient showed a typical course. In the second and third ones the painful thyroid was associated with nodular enlargement. Fine needle aspiration cytology was at first consistent with subacute thyroiditis but a repeated aspiration showed pa

Inflammation and immunity in dermatophytosis.

Infections by dermatophytes (dermatophytosis) naturally stimulate the immune system as in those by other microorganisms to induce various immunological phenomena. However, differing from other infections, the infecting organisms cannot become a direct target of antibody response or phagocytosis because they reside only in the barrier membrane of the body surface, i.e. in the stratum corneum. Thus, the immunity against dermatophytes is relative as compared with the absolute one noted in other infections such as measles and mumps. In dermatophytosis, a unique behavior of the epidermis as noted i

Retinoblastoma-binding Protein 9 Suppresses Intestinal Inflammation and Inflammation-induced Tumorigenesis in Mice.

BACKGROUND & AIMS: Retinoblastoma-binding protein 9 (RBBP9) was initially reported as cell cycle regulator via RB/E2F. Accumulating evidence has revealed the importance of RBBP9 in physiological and pathological states including inflammatory disease. However, the functional role of RBBP9 in ulcerative colitis (UC) and colitis-associated cancer (CAC) remains elusive. METHODS: Human samples of UC and CAC were examined by immunohistochemical and bioinformatics analyses. We established dextran sodium sulfate (DSS)-induced colitis, azoxymethane (AOM)/DSS-induced CAC model, and ApcMin/+ sporadic tu

Low-grade inflammation decreases emotion recognition - Evidence from the vaccination model of inflammation.

The ability to adequately interpret the mental state of another person is key to complex human social interaction. Recent evidence suggests that this ability, considered a hallmark of 'theory of mind' (ToM), becomes impaired by inflammation. However, extant supportive empirical evidence is based on experiments that induce not only inflammation but also induce discomfort and sickness, factors that could also account for temporary social impairment. Hence, an experimental inflammation manipulation was applied that avoided this confound, isolating effects of inflammation and social interaction. F

Inflammation-initiating illnesses, inflammation-related proteins, and cognitive impairment in extremely preterm infants.

Neonatal inflammation is associated with perinatal brain damage. We evaluated to what extent elevated blood levels of inflammation-related proteins supplement information about the risk of impaired early cognitive function provided by inflammation-related illnesses. From 800 infants born before the 28th week of gestation, we collected blood spots on days 1, 7 and 14, for analysis of 25 inflammation-related proteins, and data about culture-positive bacteremia, necrotizing enterocolitis (Bell stage IIIb), and isolated perforation of the intestine, during the first two weeks, and whether they wer

Precision inflammation targeting via myeloperoxidase mediated antioxidant melanin nanomedicines for chronic inflammation therapy.

Chronic inflammation represents a great threat to human health, yet the lack of site-specific therapies often leads to suboptimal efficacy and serious side effects. Here we report an inflammatory targeting strategy leveraging myeloperoxidase (MPO), a well-established pathological marker elevated in inflamed tissues, mediated accumulation of melanin nanomedicines (MNMs) in inflammatory tissues. We demonstrate that MPO mediates the precise targeting of MNMs to inflammatory tissues. MNMs treatment significantly improved survival rate of hepatopulmonary syndrome (HPS) rat model compared with the s

Keratinocyte HIF-1α Orchestrates Imiquimod-Induced Psoriasiform Inflammation by Promoting Type 3 Inflammation.

Psoriasis is a chronic inflammatory skin disease driven by the IL-23/IL-17 axis and characterized by keratinocyte hyperproliferation, epidermal thickening, and immune infiltration. While immune cell-intrinsic roles of hypoxia-inducible factor-1α (HIF-1α) have been reported, the contribution of keratinocyte HIF-1α remains less clear. In this study, we investigated epithelial HIF function in murine models of skin inflammation using keratinocyte-specific HIF-1α knockout (K14-Cre Hif1afl/fl) mice. HIF-1α deficiency attenuated epidermal hyperplasia and type 3 inflammation in the imiquimod (IMQ)-ind

[Research progress of CD93+ B lymphocyte subsets in inflammation and inflammation related diseases].

CD93 is expressed in progenitor B (pro-B) cells, precursor B (pre-B) cells and various immature B cells. It can interact with moesin, MMRN2 and other molecules to participate in cell migration, adhesion and phagocytosis, so it plays an important role in inflammation and angiogenesis. Detection of CD93+ B cell subsets has a crucial role in the diagnosis, treatment and prognosis monitoring of inflammation and inflammation-related diseases, such as Helicobacter pylori-related gastritis, sepsis, non-obese diabetes and periodontitis.

Prenatal inflammation reprograms hyperactive ILC2s that promote allergic lung inflammation and airway dysfunction.

UNLABELLED: Allergic asthma is a chronic respiratory disease that initiates in early life, but causal mechanisms are poorly understood. Here we examined how prenatal inflammation shapes allergic asthma susceptibility by reprogramming lung immunity from early development. Induction of Type I interferon-mediated inflammation during development provoked expansion and hyperactivation of group 2 innate lymphoid cells (ILC2s) seeding the developing lung. Hyperactivated ILC2s produced increased IL-5 and IL-13, and were associated with acute Th2 bias, eosinophilia, and decreased Tregs in the lung. The

Novel Models for Chronic Intestinal Inflammation in Chickens: Intestinal Inflammation Pattern and Biomarkers.

For poultry producers, chronic low-grade intestinal inflammation has a negative impact on productivity by impairing nutrient absorption and allocation of nutrients for growth. Understanding the triggers of chronic intestinal inflammation and developing a non-invasive measurement is crucial to managing gut health in poultry. In this study, we developed two novel models of low-grade chronic intestinal inflammation in broiler chickens: a chemical model using dextran sodium sulfate (DSS) and a dietary model using a high non-starch polysaccharide diet (NSP). Further, we evaluated the potential of s

Conjunctival epithelial and goblet cell function in chronic inflammation and ocular allergic inflammation.

PURPOSE OF REVIEW: Although conjunctival goblet cells are a major cell type in ocular mucosa, their responses during ocular allergy are largely unexplored. This review summarizes the recent findings that provide key insights into the mechanisms by which their function and survival are altered during chronic inflammatory responses, including ocular allergy. RECENT FINDINGS: Conjunctiva represents a major component of the ocular mucosa that harbors specialized lymphoid tissue. Exposure of mucin-secreting goblet cells to allergic and inflammatory mediators released by the local innate and adapti

Behavior of eosinophil leukocytes in acute inflammation. II. Eosinophil dynamics during acute inflammation.

The marked diminution in the number of circulating eosinophils, which has been shown to occur during acute bacterial infections, is a distinctive aspect of eosinophil physiology and of the host response to acute infection. The mouse rendered eosinophilic by infection with trichinosis provides a suitable model for study of the eosinopenic response induced by acute inflammation. The alterations in eosinophil dynamics associated with acute inflammatory reactions in trichinous mice were studied with pneumococcal abscesses, with Escherichia coli pyelonephritis, with Coxsackie viral pancreatitis, an

Association between systemic immune-inflammation index and low-grade inflammation in patients undergoing maintenance hemodialysis: SII and chronic inflammation in hemodialysis patients.

Patients with end-stage renal disease (ESRD) who are on maintenance hemodialysis (HD) often experience chronic, low-level inflammation, which is closely linked to complications such as anemia, poor nutritional status, and cardiovascular issues. The purpose of this study was to assess the average level of the systemic immune-inflammation index (SII) among individuals receiving regular HD due to ESRD and to explore the clinical and laboratory variables associated with ongoing inflammatory conditions, as indicated by the SII. This descriptive cross-sectional study involved 116 patients diagnosed

The hypoxia-inflammation cycle as a key mechanism of smoldering inflammation and progression in multiple sclerosis.

Disease progression in multiple sclerosis (MS) remains a major unmet clinical challenge, as it is driven by pathogenic mechanisms that are poorly targeted by currently available disease-modifying treatments. Whereas acute focal inflammation characterizes the relapsing-remitting phase, converging neuropathological, imaging and experimental evidence identifies a chronic low-grade compartmentalized inflammatory process, the so-called "smoldering" inflammation, as a central driver of disease progression in MS. Recent findings suggest that both tissue hypoxia (primarily resulting from vascular dysf
