Understanding How Information Sources Shape Perceptions of HIV Among Adolescents and Young Adults (AYA) in Tajikistan: A Qualitative Study.

Adolescents and young adults (AYA) aged 15-24 in Tajikistan have the lowest comprehensive knowledge of HIV compared to other AYA in Eastern Europe and Central Asia; however, little research has explored what sources of HIV information they utilize. We conducted a qualitative study with 36 AYA in Dushanbe, grouped by gender and age. Participants engaged in participatory activities and discussions over two sessions. We conducted thematic analysis and identified three main themes: (1) school-based HIV education was limited and technical, leaving practical knowledge gaps; (2) social networks often

Sources of HIV information and women's HIV knowledge in Southwest Sumba Indonesia: a cross-sectional study with mediation analysis.

BACKGROUND: Despite multiple years of government HIV educational efforts, the growing trend of new cases among women in Indonesia runs parallel with their seemingly overall lack of comprehensive knowledge about HIV. A major prevention challenge for the Indonesian government lies in delivering HIV prevention education across the world's largest archipelago. This study investigates comprehensive HIV knowledge among reproductive-age women in Southwest Sumba, Indonesia, and the sources through which they report having learned about HIV along with potential mediators of the relationship between soc

The More the Better? A Comparison of the Information Sources Used by the Public during Two Infectious Disease Outbreaks.

Recent infectious disease outbreaks have resulted in renewed recognition of the importance of risk communication planning and execution to public health control strategies. Key to these efforts is public access to information that is understandable, reliable and meets their needs for informed decision-making on protective health behaviours. Learning from the trends in sources used in previous outbreaks will enable improvements in information access in future outbreaks. Two separate random-digit dialled telephone surveys were conducted in Alberta, Canada, to explore information sources used by

Breast cancer prevention knowledge, beliefs, and information sources between non-Hispanic and Hispanic college women for risk reduction focus.

Although growing research focuses on breast cancer screenings, little is known about breast cancer prevention with risk reduction awareness for ethnic differences among college-age women. This study examined breast cancer prevention knowledge, beliefs, and information sources between non-Hispanic and Hispanic college women. Using a cross-sectional study, women at a university in the Southwest completed a 51-item survey about breast cancer risk factors, beliefs, and media and interpersonal information sources. The study was guided by McGuire's Input Output Persuasion Model. Of the 546 participa

Rodent trapping studies as an overlooked information source for understanding endemic and novel zoonotic spillover.

Rodents, a diverse, globally distributed and ecologically important order of mammals are nevertheless important reservoirs of known and novel zoonotic pathogens. Ongoing anthropogenic land use change is altering these species' abundance and distribution, which among zoonotic host species may increase the risk of zoonoses spillover events. A better understanding of the current distribution of rodent species is required to guide attempts to mitigate against potentially increased zoonotic disease hazard and risk. However, available species distribution and host-pathogen association datasets (e.g.

Evaluating Dermal Bone as a Novel Source of Endocrine Information in Ninespine and Threespine Stickleback Fish.

Monitoring the physiology of small aquatic and marine teleost fish presents challenges. Blood samples, often the first choice for endocrinologists, can be difficult or even impossible to obtain and alternative matrices currently used for hormone analyses do not occur in fishes (e.g., hair, feathers etc.) or are not easily collected from small aquatic organisms (e.g., urine and feces). Some teleosts, however, have enlarged bony dermal elements that possibly accumulate and store steroid hormones in physiological relevant concentrations. Both threespine stickleback (Gasterosteus aculeatus) and ni

Epidemiology of pulmonary tuberculosis in France. Can the hospital discharge database be a reliable source of information?

OBJECTIVE: In France, tuberculosis surveillance is based on mandatory notification (MN) of cases. However, the MN does not allow the full description of cases, and underreporting limits data interpretation. Aiming at better describing the cases of tuberculosis, the hospital record database (PMSI) was analyzed. PATIENTS AND METHOD: Incident cases of active pulmonary tuberculosis identified in 2010 in France in the PMSI were included and their characteristics were compared with those of the cases identified through the MN. RESULTS: In 2010, 5158 incident cases of pulmonary tuberculosis were id

Can we rely on public data as a source of information for cancer registry in developing countries?

BACKGROUND/AIMS: Although a "hospital-based cancer registry" is important in improving patient care, a "population-based cancer registry" with emphasis on epidemiology is important in allocating health care resources and prioritizing public health programs. Because of its reliance on retrieved clinical and para-clinical documents, there is some limitation in registering all cancer incidents in this system, especially in developing countries. In this study we examined the possibility of using public data as a complementary source of information for recording cancers in a population-based cancer

[Socioepidemic analysis of sources of information and medical care for a subpopulation of female and male participants in a nationwide informative campaign in Germany on "Danger Signal: Heartburn"].

Whilst the prevalence of gastroesophageal reflux is increasing, most people are unaware of its possible consequences. Therefore, in Autumn 2000 a nationwide information campaign was launched on the symptoms of gastroesophageal reflux and its possible treatments. One part of the information campaign was a telephone hotline which was followed by an interview by phone or a mailed questionnaire. The objective of this was to find out more about the people concerned and their complaints. The subjects of both data sets were on average 53 respectively 57 years old, half of them were female and over 60

Pollutant fate of groundwater LNAPLs under unknown pollution source information by stochastic methods.

Groundwater organic pollution by LNAPLs is a global concern, and clarifying LNAPL pollutant fate is critical for remediation under unknown pollution source information. This study proposed an integrated framework combining pollution source identification, stochastic simulation and uncertainty analysis, which integrated data assimilation (ES) with Bayesian inference (DEMC(B)) to develop the ES-DEMC(B) algorithm for accurate inversion of LNAPL source information and acquisition of their posterior probability distributions. Based on the posterior distribution, Monte Carlo stochastic simulation wa
