The effects of electricity network development besides routine malaria control measures in an underdeveloped region in the pre-elimination phase.

BACKGROUND: The main purpose of this study was to investigate the effects of electricity network development on malaria transmission. The study was performed in the rural areas of three districts in Sistan-va-Baluchestan Province, Iran. METHODS: From the mentioned districts, 122 rural communities were selected. The data of the years 2005-2009 were collected retrospectively from data banks of the district health centres and the offices of the local electricity network. Fixed and random effects panel data regression models were fitted to determine the effects of electrification and other variab

Elimination of lymphatic filariasis in the Gambia.

BACKGROUND: The prevalence of Wuchereria bancrofti, which causes lymphatic filariasis (LF) in The Gambia was among the highest in Africa in the 1950s. However, surveys conducted in 1975 and 1976 revealed a dramatic decline in LF endemicity in the absence of mass drug administration (MDA). The decline in prevalence was partly attributed to a significant reduction in mosquito density through the widespread use of insecticidal nets. Based on findings elsewhere that vector control alone can interrupt LF, we asked the question in 2013 whether the rapid scale up in the use of insecticidal nets in Th

Wash-resistance and field evaluation of alphacypermethrin treated long-lasting insecticidal net (Interceptor) against malaria vectors Anopheles culicifacies and Anopheles fluviatilis in a tribal area of Orissa, India.

A field trial was conducted on the efficacy of Interceptor nets-a long-lasting insecticidal net (LLN) factory treated with alphacypermethrin 0.667% (w/w) corresponding to 200mg/m(2), against malaria vectors Anopheles culicifacies and Anopheles fluviatilis in one of the highly endemic areas of Orissa. The study area comprised 19 villages which were randomized into three clusters and designated as Interceptor net cluster, untreated net cluster, and no net cluster. Baseline studies showed that both the vector species An. culicifacies and An. fluviatilis were 100% susceptible to alphacypermethrin.

Comparative study of kala-azar vector control measures in eastern Nepal.

This study was conducted to explore the most effective vector control tool among indoor residual spraying (IRS), long lasting insecticidal nets (LLINs) and ecological vector management (EVM) as a part of the regional visceral leishmaniasis elimination initiative. Alpha-cypermethrin as IRS, PermaNet as LLINs and plastering the inner walls of houses with lime as EVM were the interventions. One baseline and three follow-up entomological surveys were carried out in all arms using CDC miniature light traps (LT) and mouth aspirators. Comparisons were made between intervention arms and control arms w

Ivermectin to Control Malaria - A Cluster-Randomized Trial.

BACKGROUND: Malaria control and elimination is threatened by the spread of insecticide resistance and behavioral adaptation of vectors. Whether mass administration of ivermectin, a broad-spectrum antiparasitic drug that also kills mosquitoes feeding on treated persons, can reduce malaria transmission is unclear. METHODS: We conducted a cluster-randomized trial in Kwale, a county in coastal Kenya in which malaria is highly endemic and coverage and use of insecticide-treated nets are high. Clusters of household areas were randomly assigned in a 1:1 ratio to receive mass administration of iverme

Escalation of Pyrethroid Resistance in the Malaria Vector Anopheles funestus Induces a Loss of Efficacy of Piperonyl Butoxide-Based Insecticide-Treated Nets in Mozambique.

BACKGROUND: Insecticide resistance poses a serious threat to insecticide-based interventions in Africa. There is a fear that resistance escalation could jeopardize malaria control efforts. Monitoring of cases of aggravation of resistance intensity and its impact on the efficacy of control tools is crucial to predict consequences of resistance. METHODS: The resistance levels of an Anopheles funestus population from Palmeira, southern Mozambique, were characterized and their impact on the efficacy of various insecticide-treated nets established. RESULTS: A dramatic loss of efficacy of all long

Modelling the impact of insecticide-based control interventions on the evolution of insecticide resistance and disease transmission.

BACKGROUND: Current strategies to control mosquito-transmitted infections use insecticides targeted at various stages of the mosquito life-cycle. Control is increasingly compromised by the evolution of insecticide resistance but there is little quantitative understanding of its impact on control effectiveness. We developed a computational approach that incorporates the stage-structured mosquito life-cycle and allows tracking of insecticide resistant genotypes. This approach makes it possible to simultaneously investigate: (i) the population dynamics of mosquitoes throughout their whole life-cy

House modifications using insecticide-treated screening of eave and window as a vector control tool: evidence from a semi-field system in Tanzania and simulated epidemiological impact.

BACKGROUND: Gaps in unimproved house structures, especially in eaves and windows, allow mosquito entry, increasing indoor vector-borne disease transmission. Simple modifications to such houses may reduce human exposure, and insecticide treatment may kill mosquitoes, benefiting all community members. This study evaluated insecticide-treated screening (ITS) for eaves and windows, incorporated with deltamethrin and piperonyl butoxide (PBO), compared to a permethrin and PBO-treated bednet in Tanzania. METHOD: A randomised Latin-square design (4 × 4) was used in four experimental huts within a lar

Inter-cluster contamination: a semivariance analysis of community effect ranges of malaria vector control interventions in a four-armed malaria trial in Muleba, Tanzania.

BACKGROUND: The presence of a community effect in cluster randomized trials of malaria vector control interventions has led to the implementation of "buffer zones" around clusters to limit the potential for contamination between interventions. No consensus has been reached on how large these buffers need to be to encapsulate the effect. METHODS: Nested within a phase-III cluster randomized malaria vector control trial in Northwest Tanzania, this study aims to determine the presence and spatial range of community effects from long-lasting insecticidal net (LLIN) and indoor residual spraying (I

The epidemiological benefit of pyrethroid-pyrrole insecticide treated nets against malaria: an individual-based malaria transmission dynamics modelling study.

BACKGROUND: Insecticide treated nets (ITNs) are the most important malaria prevention tool in Africa but the rise of pyrethroid resistance in mosquitoes is likely impeding control. WHO has recommended a novel pyrethroid-pyrrole ITN following evidence of epidemiological benefit in two cluster-randomised, controlled trials (CRTs). It remains unclear how effective more costly pyrethroid-pyrrole ITNs are compared with other tools, or whether they should be deployed when budgets are limited. We aimed to compare the epidemiological impact and cost-effectiveness of the mass distribution of pyrethroid

Protective effects of Olyset® Net on Plasmodium falciparum infection after three years of distribution in western Kenya.

BACKGROUND: Several types of insecticides, treating technologies and materials are available for long-lasting insecticide-treated nets (LLINs). The variations may result in different efficacies against mosquitoes and correspondingly infection risks for the Plasmodium falciparum malaria parasite. This cross-sectional study investigated whether infection risk varied among children who slept under different LLIN brands in rural villages of western Kenya. METHODS: Children sleeping under various types of LLINs were tested for P. falciparum infection using a diagnostic polymerase chain reaction (P

Estimation of the magnitude of plastic and chemical pollution related to the abandonment of insecticide treated nets in the environment: From a KAP survey conducted in Benin in July 2023.

BACKGROUND: Malaria remains a significant public health threat, particularly in vulnerable populations. Insecticide-treated mosquito nets (ITNs) have been a cornerstone of malaria prevention efforts for decades. ITNs have demonstrably reduced malaria morbidity and mortality. However, their widespread use has raised concerns about a potential unintended consequence: environmental pollution. METHODS: To assess the potential environmental impact of ITNs in a real-world setting, a Knowledge, Attitudes and Practices (KAP) survey was conducted in Djougou, a high malaria burden in Northen Benin. Acceptability and preferences for dual-active ingredient long-lasting insecticidal nets in rural Tanzania: a mixed-methods study.

BACKGROUND: The World Health Organization (WHO) recommends dual-active ingredient long-lasting insecticidal nets (dual-AI LLINs) for protection against malaria in areas with insecticide resistance. The effectiveness of LLINs, however, depends on user compliance, influenced by community perceptions of malaria, prevention methods, and the acceptability of LLINs. Understanding these factors is essential for the success of large-scale implementation. METHODS: This study was part of the two cluster-randomized controlled trials (RCTs) evaluating the efficacy of dual-AI LLINs on malaria indicators i

Indoor residual spraying for preventing malaria.

BACKGROUND: Primary malaria prevention on a large scale depends on two vector control interventions: indoor residual spraying (IRS) and insecticide-treated mosquito nets (ITNs). Historically, IRS has reduced malaria transmission in many settings in the world, but the health effects of IRS have never been properly quantified. This is important, and will help compare IRS with other vector control interventions. OBJECTIVES: To quantify the impact of IRS alone, and to compare the relative impacts of IRS and ITNs, on key malariological parameters. SEARCH STRATEGY: We searched the Cochrane Infecti

Preliminary examination of integrated vector management in a tropical rainforest area of Cameroon.

In the tropical rainforest area of Cameroon, people are affected by blackflies (Simulium spp.) and mosquitoes (Anopheles spp). Use of insecticide-treated bed nets (ITNs) has been promoted to protect vulnerable groups from mosquito bites, whereas historically indoor residual spraying (IRS) was the primary intervention. In a malaria-endemic area, a pilot study examined different mosquito control interventions applied to entire villages to assess their impact on vectors, malaria incidence and the quality of life of the communities. The Sanaga River near these villages was treated with insecticide

Integrating routinely collected mosquito vector and human behavioral data for malaria prevention: A case example in central region Malawi.

BACKGROUND: Integrating human behavioral data with data on malaria vector biting rates can help to quantify human exposure to malaria vectors and identify gaps in protection; however, to date, the availability of necessary human location and behavior data have been more limited as compared to that of corresponding entomological data. To expand the data available for use in vector-human data integrations, this case example explored the process and interpretations of integrating human behavior estimates from the Malaria Behavior Survey (MBS), a large-scale cross-sectional survey measuring behavi

Couple concordance related to ITN use in Malawi.

INTRODUCTION: The shift to universal insecticide-treated nets (ITN) coverage in Malawi creates opportunities for establishing effective social and behavior change (SBC) interventions which target general populations, including couples. However, couple concordance in ITN use has not been well analyzed. We explored couple dynamics and concordance related to ITN use in Malawi to inform the potential role of couple-centered SBC approaches to improve consistent ITN use. METHODS: The analysis focuses on 1213 male-female couples or dyads, a subset of a nationally representative survey. Key variables

Determinants of malaria prevalence among children under 5 years of age in 17 sub-Saharan African countries: insights from Malaria Indicator Surveys.

BACKGROUND: Malaria remains a major public health burden among children under five in several Sub-Saharan African (SSA) countries, largely attributable to their underdeveloped immune systems, constrained access to healthcare services, and environmental conditions conducive to transmission. OBJECTIVE: This study aims to identify the key determinants of malaria infection among children under five by examining both individual-level characteristics and community-level drivers within this vulnerable population. METHODS: We conducted a secondary analysis of the Malaria Indicator Surveys (2016-2022

[Comparative study of the ownership and use of long-lasting insecticide-treated mosquito nets in the Man and Korhogo regions (Côte d'Ivoire)].

INTRODUCTION AND METHODS: While Ebola virus disease (EVD) remains a major threat, recent advances have led to the approval of several medical products, in particular the rVSVΔG-ZEBOV-GP vaccine (Ervebo) and two monoclonal antibody treatments, mAb114 (Ebanga) and REGN-EB3 (Inmazeb). However, their use in post-exposure prophylaxis (PEP) remains poorly documented. Our narrative review of the literature and guidelines aims to assess the potential of the rVSVΔG-ZEBOV-GP vaccine and monoclonal antibodies mAb114 and REGN-EB3 for PEP following high-risk exposure. RESULTS: Very few studies have been c

Low ITN utilization among households in SWEPR Ethiopia: challenge for malaria elimination, a mixed design approach.

INTRODUCTION: To prevent malaria starting from 2005 more than 2 billion insecticide-treated nets (ITNs) have been distributed globally. Even though Ethiopia has been doing nationwide ITN distribution starting from 2016 with 64% ITN coverage, there is a significant gap in its utilization in different settings. Therefore, this study aimed to assess the utilization of ITN and associated factors among households in SWEPRS, 2023. METHODS: Community-based mixed study designs were applied in the present study. Firstly, the malaria area was selected purposively and the study participants were reached
