The effects of interferon (IFN) alpha-2a treatment on platelet function were evaluated in 20 patients affected by essential thrombocythaemia (ET). Baseline data documented the well-known abnormalities of in vitro platelet aggregation and the constant presence of a delta-storage pool deficiency. A patient whose hairy cell leukaemia had begun to respond to alpha interferon therapy developed overt atypical mycobacterial infection. This eventually responded to combination antimicrobial therapy. The clinical difficulties involved in this unique case included difficulty in isolation of the organism, failure of an empirical trial of antituberculous therapy and false attribution of the patient's infective symptoms to alpha interferon.

PURPOSE: To report the results of IFNα2a therapy in patients with Behçet uveitis refractory to azathioprine-cyclosporine combination treatment.
METHODS: In a retrospective study, 39 patients treated with either azathioprine-cyclosporine combination treatment (group 1, n = 23) or IFNα2a (group 2, n = 16) with a diagnosis of ocular Behçet disease (BD), were included in the study. Group 2 consisted of patients who did not respond to conventional combination therapy, and were therefore treated with IFNα2a. Clinical response and relapse rates were recorded for each group.

Interferon-alpha therapy is well known to induce a wide range of thyroid dysfunction. A 22-year-old woman with chronic hepatitis C developed overt hyperthyroidism while on interferon-alpha and ribavirin therapy. Tc-99m thyroid scintigraphy demonstrated virtually absent tracer uptake consistent with subacute thyroiditis. Ten months after starting antiviral therapy, overt hyperthyroidism recurred. We report the case of a 56 year-old woman with post-transfusion chronic hepatitis C who presented with a severe ALT flare up associated with a rapid progression of liver fibrosis during interferon alpha 2b therapy.
