The intergenerational health, social care, and justice system contacts associated with household substance misuse in Wales.

BACKGROUND: Household substance misuse (SM) is associated with child deprivation and worse physical and mental health. This study utilised linked healthcare, justice, and children's social care data in Wales for the first time, to create a reusable cohort of households that experience substance misuse (SMHH). METHODS: Using the SAIL Databank, a population-scale retrospective electronic cohort (e-cohort) was created to perform a cross-sectional analysis of SM-related health and criminal justice events during 2011-2019 for adults and children in SMHH, which were compared with the rest of the po

Network analysis of intergenerational associations: Parental childhood trauma, depression, anxiety, and adolescent maladaptive traits in depressed youth.

BACKGROUND: Adolescent depression, comorbid with maladaptive traits, increases the risks of suicide and psychosocial dysfunction, yet intergenerational pathways linking parental childhood trauma, depression, anxiety, and adolescent maladaptive traits remain complex and unclear. This study aimed to use network analysis to investigate these transmission mechanisms in clinically depressed adolescents. METHODS: This study recruited 138 parent-adolescent pairs (Mage = 15.92, SD = 1.84 for adolescents; Mage = 43.65, SD = 5.37 for parents) to complete the assessment. Network analysis was applied to

Association of maternal and paternal adverse childhood experiences with emotional and behavioral problems among preschool children.

Although maternal adverse childhood experiences (ACEs) are known to be related to the emotional and behavioral problems (EBPs) of offspring, few studies have surveyed the intergenerational effects of paternal ACEs. In addition, no study has yet explored the combination and interaction effects of maternal and paternal ACEs on preschool children's EBPs in China, and the gender differences in these relationships also remain to be explored. A total of 3,575 preschool children from 12 preschools from Hefei city of Anhui province were included in this study. We used a binomial logistic regression to

Adverse Childhood Experiences in Mothers With Chronic Pain and Intergenerational Impact on Children.

Adverse childhood experiences (ACEs; eg, parental divorce, physical or sexual abuse) are more prevalent in individuals with chronic pain compared with the general population. Both increased maternal ACEs and chronic pain have been associated with poor physical and emotional functioning in offspring. However, the mechanisms driving these associations are poorly understood. Thus, this cross-sectional study evaluated the relation between maternal ACEs, mothers' current functioning, and children's physical and emotional functioning in a sample of mothers with chronic pain and their 8- to 12-year-o

Dissociation as a mediator between child abuse history and adult abuse potential.

OBJECTIVE: It has commonly been found that abused children are at risk for later becoming abusive parents (Kaufman & Zigler. 1987; Oliver, 1993) and observational learning has been discussed as a mechanism that perpetuates this intergenerational cycle of abuse. However, two thirds of abused children do not become abusive (Kaufman & Zigler, 1987). Thus, the goal of the current study was to examine whether dissociation functions as an additional mechanism mediating the relation between a history of child abuse and abusiveness as an adult. METHOD: A cross-sectional design was used to examine phy

Risk and resilience from early to middle childhood in three-generation families: Grandmother coresidence stability matters.

Coresidential three-generation families are becoming increasingly prevalent, but the contribution of grandparent coresidence stability during early childhood is poorly understood. Informed by the process-person-context-time theory, this study links grandmothers' behavioral health risk and mothers' psychopathology to child psychopathology (i.e., total internalizing and externalizing problems). We hypothesized mediation pathways through maternal psychological and physical aggression and tested grandmother coresidential stability as a moderator. A nationally representative sample of three-generat

Generational caregiver connectedness and social technology: A qualitative study.

BACKGROUND: Social disconnection is associated with all-cause mortality and multiple morbidities. Varying disconnection across caregiver generations may be explained by varying social technology use. Insight into social technology use across caregiver generations is lacking. OBJECTIVE: To describe the experiences of caregiving and enhanced connectedness through social technology for three generations of family caregivers for chronically ill older adults. METHODS: Guided by the Convoy Model, this qualitative descriptive study sampled caregivers of older adults with chronic illness across thre

Enhancing District Health Center membership among older adults through intergenerational home-based and AI-generated digital interventions: protocol for a pilot cluster randomized controlled trial.

BACKGROUND: Hong Kong is experiencing rapid population aging, with the population of older adults expected to reach 36.0% by 2046. The rise in life expectancy is often accompanied by increased chronic diseases and mental health challenges. The healthcare system remains heavily focused on tertiary care, leading to increased system burden and suboptimal health outcomes. Strengthening engagement with primary care for older adults, particularly through community-based services such as District Health Centers, is essential for improving long-term health outcomes. This approach promotes early detect

Association Between Intergenerational Relationship With Adult Children and Anxiety-Depression Comorbidity Symptoms in Older Women in China: A National Study Using Latent Profile Analysis.

BACKGROUND: The phenomenon of global aging is becoming increasingly salient, and the mental health of older women requires greater attention. However, there is a conspicuous paucity in the exploration of anxiety-depression comorbidity patterns among Chinese older women, as well as the correlation between intergenerational relationships with adult children and these comorbid conditions. METHODS: About 20,153 older women aged 65 years or above from the China Aging and Health Survey (CAHS) were included in the study. Depression and anxiety were assessed using the Patient Health Questionnaire-9 (

Intergenerational support, conflict, and postpartum depression trajectories among Chinese mothers: Family-based care and multilevel predictors.

BACKGROUND: Postpartum depression (PPD) remains a major public health concern. In China, the postpartum period is embedded within a family-based caregiving system characterized by intensive intergenerational involvement. Within this context, intergenerational support (IS) and intergenerational conflict (IC) often coexist, forming a distinct stress-regulation environment. Guided by the stress-buffering model of social support, this study conceptualizes the Chinese postpartum family as a dynamic system in which IS and IC jointly shape maternal mental health over time. METHODS: A four-wave longi

"Sugar Daddy-Marandza" Dynamics and HIV Vulnerability: A Literature Review of Transactional and Intergenerational Sexual Relationships Among Adolescent Girls and Young Women in Sub-Saharan Africa, With a Focus on Mozambique.

Transactional and intergenerational sexual relationships, often termed "sugar daddy-marandza" dynamics, are a key driver of HIV among adolescent girls and young women (AGYW) in sub-Saharan Africa (SSA). This narrative review synthesizes evidence from 29 studies across the region, using the term "marandza"-originating in Mozambique-as an illustrative lens to examine a region-wide phenomenon. The review confirms these relationships consistently increase HIV vulnerability due to power imbalances, economic dependency, and patriarchal norms. Poverty, consumerism, and peer pressure propel AGYW into

Psychiatric disorders following the clustering of family disadvantages in previous generations: a multigenerational cohort study.

PURPOSE: There is a lack of multigenerational research on the extent to which mental health is informed by transmission of multiple disadvantages across previous generations. This study aims to investigate how family socioeconomic and psychosocial disadvantages cluster and transition over grandparental and parental generations, and how this might be associated with grandchild psychiatric disorders. METHODS: We utilized a cohort study with data following three generations from the Stockholm Birth Cohort Multigenerational Study, including 11,299 individuals born in 1953 (parental generation), t

'I care for my grandma because she's one of my best friends': Intergenerational caregiving and the everyday geographies of aging in Palm Beach County, Florida.

In this article, we examine the intricate dynamics of caregiving arrangements where individuals under the age of 18 and older adults care for each other and share caregiving responsibilities for other household members experiencing chronic illness, disability, or medical needs. Drawing on a subset of geospatial maps, sketch mapping, and interview data collected from a two-year research project with caregiving youth, the article explores how caregiving shapes the lived experiences of both young people and older adults in peri-urban Florida, and the spaces and places available to them in their e

Intergenerational transmission of fertility in Great Britain: A parity-specific investigation using the 1970 British Cohort Study.

Studies in low-fertility settings have consistently found positive relationships between parents' and children's fertility timing and family sizes, and these persist after accounting for socio-demographic factors. We explore intergenerational transmission of fertility in Great Britain, where socio-economic inequalities are larger and could play a greater role in explaining intergenerational continuities than in other settings. Using the 1970 British Cohort Study, a long-running longitudinal data set, we estimate parity-specific discrete-time event-history models to investigate the role of moth

(Why) do victims become perpetrators? Intergenerational transmission of parental violence in a representative German sample.

Child maltreatment can severely impair children's emotional and physical well-being as well as their individual development across the life span. In 2011, the Criminological Research Institute of Lower Saxony (Germany), conducted a nationally representative victim survey on diverse forms of victimizations (N = 11,428). Among other things, experienced and exerted parental violence as well as participants' knowledge regarding the abolition of the parental right of corporal punishment were assessed. Apart from providing current estimates of the prevalence of experienced and exerted parental viole

Grandmothers' productivity and the HIV/AIDS pandemic in sub-Saharan Africa.

The human immunodeficiency virus (HIV)/acquired immune deficiency syndrome (AIDS) pandemic has left large numbers of orphans in sub-Saharan Africa. Botswana has an HIV prevalence rate of approximately 40% in adults. Morbidity and mortality are high, and in a population of a 1.3 million there are nearly 50,000 children who have lost one or both parents to HIV/AIDS. The extended family, particularly grandparents, absorbs much of the childrearing responsibilities. This creates large amounts of additional work for grandmothers especially. The embodied capital model and the grandmother hypothesis a

Postnatal psychiatric illness: the impact on partners.

Out of 24 spouses of women with postnatal psychiatric illness admitted to a mother and baby unit over 12 months, 12 were found to be psychiatrically ill, as defined by RDC or DSM-III criteria. The rate of psychiatric disorder was higher in these men than in a control group of men whose partners remained well after childbirth and a group of men whose partners were admitted to a psychiatric hospital with non-puerperal illness. The onset of psychiatric illness in the men typically followed admission of their wives to the mother and baby unit. Other associations with illness in the man were a hist

Intergenerational Transmission of Child Abuse Among Married Women in South Korea: A Multigroup Analysis of Empathetic Communication (TSL: Thanks, Sorry, and Love).

Intergenerational transmission of child abuse (hereinafter referred to as ITCA) has been continuously reported. Supportive relations with others have also been discussed as a protective factor to prevent this cycle. However, research has mainly investigated supportive adult and peer relationships formed in childhood, with little discussion of the impact of supportive partner relationships formed after becoming an adult. This study examined whether empathetic communication (hereinafter referred to as TSL: "Thanks, Sorry, and Love") attenuates the transmission of married women's child abuse expe

Maternal adverse childhood experiences, executive function & emotional availability in mother-child dyads.

BACKGROUND: Maternal adverse childhood experiences (ACEs) are associated with difficulties in parent-child relationships; however, current research has primarily used cross-sectional designs. Parent and child behavior may be differentially affected by ACEs as children develop and caregiving demands change. Furthermore, diminished executive function (EF) is associated with both ACEs and parenting difficulties and may be a mechanism underlying the intergenerational effects of ACEs. OBJECTIVE: This study examined longitudinal associations between maternal ACEs, maternal EF, and patterns of chang
