Hyaluronan accumulation in the retroorbital connective tissue is one of the pathological features of Graves' ophthalmopathy. Interleukin-1beta (IL-1beta) is known to stimulate hyaluronan synthesis in orbital fibroblasts. In the present study, the intracellular signal transduction pathways involved in this stimulatory effect were investigated in cultured human retroorbital fibroblasts from patients with Graves' ophthalmopathy. The effect of melatonin (MLT) on the brain levels of tumor necrosis factor alpha (TNF-alpha) and interleukin-1beta (IL-1beta) in Venezuelan equine encephalomyelitis (VEE) virus infection was determined. The objective of the present study was to determine the effects of concanavalin A (Con A) administration on the interleukin 1beta converting enzyme (ICE) activity and CPP32-like activity in mouse liver. Burkholderia pseudomallei is a causative agent of melioidosis. The present study investigated IL-1beta mRNA and protein expression by peripheral blood mononuclear cells and purified monocytes (n = 10) in response to infection with B. pseudomallei and B. thailandensis.
