IMPORTANCE: Mycosis fungoides (MF) is the most common subtype of cutaneous T-cell lymphoma and may rarely infiltrate the ocular structures. Ophthalmic findings in MF can be highly variable. The most commonly involved ocular tissue is the eyelid skin, but intraocular involvement can be seen in patients with extensive systemic disease. To our knowledge, an isolated eyelid mass as an initial manifestation of MF has not been previously reported.
OBSERVATIONS: We report a series of 4 cases of ocular involvement in patients with MF demonstrating a highly variable ophthalmic presentation of this dis

Ocular manifestations of adult T-cell leukemia/lymphoma (ATL) are rare events. However, several ocular lesions which resulted from human T-cell leukemia virus type I (HTLV-I) infection have been reported, including direct infiltration of ATL cells, cytomegalovirus retinitis, and HTLV-I-associated uveitis (HAU). The aim of this study was to characterize ocular involvement in ATL and to correlate these lesions with HTLV-I proviral DNA integration. Three patients with acute-type ATL and ocular lesions were evaluated hematologically and ophthalmologically. Analysis of HTLV-I proviral DNA was carri

PURPOSE: The vitreous proteome might provide an attractive gateway to discriminate between various uveitis aetiologies and gain novel insights into the underlying pathophysiological processes. Here, we investigated 180 vitreous proteins to discover novel biomarkers and broaden disease insights by comparing (1). primary vitreoretinal lymphoma ((P)VRL) versus other aetiologies, (2). sarcoid uveitis versus tuberculosis (TB)-associated uveitis and (3). granulomatous (sarcoid and TB) uveitis versus other aetiologies.
METHODS: Vitreous protein levels were determined by proximity extension assay in

BACKGROUND: The finding of hematological malignancies within bone marrow in heterotopic ossification has been reported only a handful of times previously in the literature. We described a case of true trilineage hematopoiesis in an excised area of heterotopic ossification from an enucleated blind painful eye.
CASE PRESENTATION: A 70-year-old Caucasian man, positive for asymptomatic lymphoplasmacytic lymphoma, presented with a blind painful right eye in our ophthalmology department to evaluate enucleation bulbi. After enucleation, a histopathologic examination revealed the presence of intertra

Although the pathogenesis in most cases of intermediate uveitis is unknown, a small minority of cases is associated with a variety of specific inflammatory etiologies: sarcoidosis; multiple sclerosis; Lyme disease; syphilis; ocular lymphoma; and as a rare manifestation of Behçet's disease and AIDS. A 61-year-old woman developed pars planitis after cataract surgery. A vitrectomy was performed after ten months when a white capsular plaque and an hypopyon developed. Propionibacterium acnes was isolated. The intermediate uveitis was not controlled until later removal of the intraocular lens and ca

Presentation is made of the ocular complications of AIDS which were observed in the ophthalmologic clinic of the University Hospital in Zurich from 1986 to 1991. Besides cotton-wool spots, CMV-retinitis is the most frequent and best known infectious complication. In all other infections, diagnosis is most difficult, because it could never be supported by histological examination. Presentation is made of some cases of acute retinal necrosis, toxoplasmosis, cryptococcosis, candida, and of some cases of uveitis with unknown etiology. Furthermore we present one intraocular non-Hodgkin lymphoma, so

INTRODUCTION: Primary central nervous system natural killer/T-cell lymphoma (primary-CNS-NK/TCL) is a rare non-Hodgkin's lymphoma. To our knowledge, only five patients have been described previously, all of whom were male, with brain parenchymal involvement and previous Epstein-Barr virus infection, it has never been reported to present as leptomeningeal disease as our case. Our objective is to report a rare case of primary-CNS-NK/TCL presenting as leptomeningeal disease and to share our diagnostic/therapeutic approach to this rare disease.
METHODS: We report a rare case of primary-CNS-NK/TCL

BACKGROUND: Intraocular lymphoma (IOL) is an uncommon ophthalmic malignancy and poses a diagnostic challenge. Uveitis associated with systemic lymphoma (USL) has been predominantly attributed to non-Hodgkin lymphoma (NHL) and rarely reported with Hodgkin lymphoma (HL) in the literature.
METHODS: Case report with review of the literature.
RESULTS: A 25-year-old healthy male presented with bilateral granulomatous panuveitis including vasculitis and discrete chorioretinal yellowish-white lesions. Macular optical coherence tomography (OCT) of both eyes revealed a disruption of ellipsoid and inte

Primary central nervous system lymphoma (PCNSL) is a rare type of non-Hodgkin lymphoma, which uncommonly presents with optic nerve infiltration (ONI). ONI has been reported mostly in relapse cases of PCNSL and is rarely the sole manifestation of the disease at the time of diagnosis. We report a case of a 69-year-old female who presented with progressive visual impairment with relative afferent pupillary defect (RAPD) on examination. Orbital and cranial magnetic resonance imaging (MRI) revealed bilateral optic nerve sheath contrast enhancement with an incidental finding of a right frontal lobe

Vitreoretinal Lymphoma (VRL) is a rare ocular malignancy often presenting with atypical retinal findings, which can lead to misdiagnosis. We report the case of a patient with bilateral intraocular lesions and reduced visual acuity. Diagnosis was confirmed by multimodal imaging and molecular analysis of aqueous humor. Treatment consisted of intravitreal methotrexate and rituximab, followed by systemic chemotherapy, achieving partial resolution of the ocular lesions but subsequent ocular and systemic recurrence. After rescue treatment, patient achieved sustained complete remission. Early diagnos

The aim of this study was to evaluate intraocular pressure (IOP) associated with use of glucocorticoids in children and adolescents treated for acute lymphoblastic leukemia and non-Hodgkin lymphoma. We carried out a prospective descriptive study with measurement of IOP before treatment (D0), 8th (D8), 14th (D14), and 28 h days (D28) of treatment. We examined 12 patients, with two cases of ocular hypertension, and it was found a statistically significant difference between the means of IOP between D0 versus D8 and D0 versus D14 (P = 0.013). BACKGROUND: The distribution of uveitis varies with genetic, ethnic, geographic, environmental, and lifestyle factors. Epidemiological information about the patterns of uveitis is useful when an ophthalmologist considers the diagnosis of uveitis. Therefore, it is important to identify the causes of uveitis over the years in different regions. The purposes of this study were to characterize the uveitis patients who first arrived at the University of Tokyo Hospital in 2013-2015, and to analyze the changes in the patterns of uveitis from 2004 to 2012 to 2013-2015.
METHODS: We retrospectively ide

Intraocular tumours may be benign or malignant. The latter are more numerous, and endanger not only vision but life as well. Two of them deserve special attention: melanoma malignum oculi in adults and retinoblastoma in children. Melanoma malignum may arise from all three areas of the uvea: the iris, the ciliary body and the choroid. The more malignant growths are those which are situated closer to the posterior pole. Histologically the epitheloid cell-type of melanoma is more malignant than those containing only spindle cells. Their treatment depends on the size: in the case of large tumours
