Effects of consumer surface sterilization on diet DNA metabarcoding data of terrestrial invertebrates in natural environments and feeding trials.

DNA metabarcoding is an emerging tool used to quantify diet in environments and consumer groups where traditional approaches are unviable, including small-bodied invertebrate taxa. However, metabarcoding of small taxa often requires DNA extraction from full body parts (without dissection), and it is unclear whether surface contamination from body parts alters presumed diet presence or diversity. We examined four different measures of diet (presence, rarefied read abundance, richness, and species composition) for a terrestrial invertebrate consumer (the spider Heteropoda venatoria) both collecte

Host Defense Proteins and Peptides with Lipopolysaccharide-Binding Activity from Marine Invertebrates and Their Therapeutic Potential in Gram-Negative Sepsis.

Sepsis is a life-threatening complication of an infectious process that results from the excessive and uncontrolled activation of the host's pro-inflammatory immune response to a pathogen. Lipopolysaccharide (LPS), also known as endotoxin, which is a major component of Gram-negative bacteria's outer membrane, plays a key role in the development of Gram-negative sepsis and septic shock in humans. To date, no specific and effective drug against sepsis has been developed. This review summarizes data on LPS-binding proteins from marine invertebrates (ILBPs) that inhibit LPS toxic effects and are o

Stereochemistry and neuropharmacology of a 'bath salt' cathinone: S-enantiomer of mephedrone reduces cocaine-induced reward and withdrawal in invertebrates.

Knowledge about the neuropharmacology of mephedrone (MEPH) applies primarily to the racemate, or street form of the drug, but not to its individual enantiomers. Here, through chemical isolation of MEPH enantiomers and subsequent behavioral characterization in established invertebrate (planarian) assays, we began separating adverse effects of MEPH from potential therapeutic actions. We first compared stereotypical and environmental place conditioning (EPC) effects of racemic MEPH, S-MEPH, and R-MEPH. Stereotypy was enhanced by acute treatment (100-1000 μM) with each compound; however, S-MEPH wa

Influence of soot carbon on the bioaccumulation of sediment-bound polycyclic aromatic hydrocarbons by marine benthic invertebrates: an interspecies comparison.

The sorption of polycyclic aromatic hydrocarbons (PAHs) to soot carbon in marine sediments has been hypothesized to reduce PAH bioavailability. This hypothesis was tested for eight species of marine benthic invertebrates (four polychaete worms, Clymenella torquata, Nereis virens, Cirriformia grandis, and Pectinaria gouldii, and four bivalve mollusks, Macoma balthica, Mulinia lateralis, Yoldia limatula, and Mya arenaria) that span a wide range of feeding behavior, ability to metabolize PAHs, and gut chemistry. Organisms were exposed for 20 d to two PAH-spiked sediments, one with soot and one wi

Discovery of influenza-like virus clades in invertebrates and the evolutionary history and host-shifting events of Orthomyxoviridae in metazoans.

Epidemics are often initiated by emerging and re-emerging infectious diseases caused by viruses of animal origin. It is thus important to identify the reservoirs of potentially zoonotic viruses and understand the dynamics of their host shifts. The flu viruses belong to the virus family Orthomyxoviridae, which also contains Isavirus, Quaranjavirus, and Thogotovirus. Many members of this virus family are known to be pathogenic to humans. For initial surveillance of animal-originated or zoonotic Orthomyxoviridae, unclassified viruses were screened by the use of high-throughput transcriptomes as a

Accumulation of Methylmercury in Invertebrates and Masked Shrews (Sorex cinereus) at an Upland Forest-Peatland Interface in Northern Minnesota, USA.

Mercury (Hg) methylation is often elevated at the terrestrial-peatland interface, but methylmercury (MeHg) production at this "hot spot" has not been linked with in situ biotic accumulation. We examined total Hg and MeHg levels in peat, invertebrates and tissues of the insectivore Sorex cinereus (masked shrew), inhabiting a terrestrial-peatland ecotone in northern Minnesota, USA. Mean MeHg concentrations in S. cinereus (71 ng g-1) fell between concentrations measured in spiders (mean 70-140 ng g-1), and ground beetles and millipedes (mean 29-42 ng g-1). Methylmercury concentrations in S. ciner

Effects of pesticides on soil invertebrates in model ecosystem and field studies: a review and comparison with laboratory toxicity data.

A systematic review was carried out to investigate the extent to which higher-tier (terrestrial model ecosystem [TME] and field) data regarding pesticide effects can be compared with laboratory toxicity data for soil invertebrates. Data in the public domain yielded 970 toxicity endpoint data sets, representing 71 pesticides and 42 soil invertebrate species or groups. For most pesticides, the most frequent effect class was for no observed effects, although relatively high numbers of pronounced and persistent effects occurred when Lumbricidae and Enchytraeidae were exposed to fungicides and when

Targeting microglial dysfunction: The antioxidant potential of and the regulation of microglial responsiveness by dermatan sulfate from a marine invertebrate.

Microglia are the main immune cells of the central nervous system (CNS) and are responsible for maintaining tissue homeostasis. Their chronic activation contributes to neuroinflammation and the progression of neurodegenerative diseases (NDs). Dermatan sulfate (DS) obtained from the ascidian Phallusia nigra (PnDS) exhibits the same sulfation pattern (IdoUA(2S)-GalNAc(6S)) as DS found in neurogenic regions of adult mammals. In the present study, the effects of PnDS on the modulation of murine BV-2 microglial cells subjected to paraquat (PQ)-induced oxidative stress were investigated. Cells were

First assessment of wastewater effluent and contaminated surface waters using the invertebrate cell line (C6/36).

The increasing complexity of chemical mixtures in aquatic environments, particularly from wastewater treatment plant (WWTP) effluents, drives the need for sensitive, ethical, and efficient toxicity assessment tools. While in vitro methods using fish and mammalian cell lines are well established, invertebrate cell lines remain underutilised despite their ecological relevance. This study aimed to compare the sensitivity of an invertebrate cell line (C6/36, Aedes albopictus) with two commonly used fish cell lines (RTgill-W1 and PLHC-1) across three toxicological endpoints: cytotoxicity, oxidative

DRIFteRS: A dataset of drift invertebrate densities in streams and rivers across western North America, 1997-2024.

Prey availability is among the most influential and highly variable determinants of fish growth and freshwater habitat carrying capacity, yet it remains understudied compared to physical habitat variables (Ouellet et al., 2025; Rosenfeld et al., 2014; Weber et al., 2017). We often lack a clear understanding of how much food is available to fishes, how it varies spatially and temporally, and how it influences responses to restoration (Ouellet et al., 2025; Rossi et al., 2024; Wipfli et al., 2010). Pesticide-Free Rice Paddies Promote Diverse and Distinct Aquatic Invertebrate Communities in Cool-Temperate Agroecosystems.

Freshwater wetlands are rapidly declining due to the expansion of agriculture and urbanisation, resulting in significant biodiversity loss. In the Swiss lowlands, 90% of wetlands have been lost. Researchers and farmers are therefore jointly exploring the pesticide-free cultivation of paddy rice as a land-sharing approach that increases habitat availability for aquatic organisms. We studied the role of rice paddies for aquatic biodiversity by comparing key environmental variables and macroinvertebrate communities with those in nearby natural wetlands over a 2-year period. Rice paddies may provi

Soil Invertebrate Body Size Groups and Effect Magnitude Jointly Influence Global Soil CO2 Emissions.

Soil invertebrates represent vital components of belowground biodiversity and play pivotal roles in regulating key carbon (C) cycling processes, particularly soil respiration. Despite the recognised effects of invertebrates on soil respiration, previous studies suffer from a major blind spot: a lack of global-scale interpretations of inferred associations describing how these organisms mediate C release. In this study, we integrated 556 datasets spanning 90 publications to systematically assess the global patterns and inferred associations by which soil invertebrates influence soil respiration

Redox-driven mechanisms link pesticide-induced microglial immunotoxicity to neurobehavioural impairment in an invertebrate ecotoxicological model.

This study aimed to compare the biological consequences of mitochondrial- versus cytoplasmic-driven superoxide dysregulation, with a focus on microglial immunotoxicity and neurobehavioural outcomes. Murine BV-2 microglial cells were exposed to sublethal concentrations of rotenone (ROT) or paraquat (PQT) to assess cytotoxicity, redox imbalance, mitochondrial alterations, oxidative macromolecular damage, inflammatory modulation, and cytomorphological alterations. In parallel, acute toxicity and neurobehavioural responses were evaluated in the invertebrate model Eisenia fetida. Both pesticides re

Discovery of a New Lichtheimia (Lichtheimiaceae, Mucorales) from Invertebrate Niche and Its Phylogenetic Status and Physiological Characteristics.

Species of Lichtheimia are important opportunistic fungal pathogens in the order Mucorales that are isolated from various sources such as soil, indoor air, food products, feces, and decaying vegetables. In recent years, species of Lichtheimia have become an emerging causative agent of invasive mucormycosis. In Europe and USA, Lichtheimia are the second and third most common causal fungus of mucormycosis, respectively. Thus, the aim of this study was to survey the diversity of species of Lichtheimia hidden in poorly studied hosts, such as invertebrates, in Korea. Eight Lichtheimia strains were

Testing the effectiveness of different wash protocols to remove body surface contaminants in invertebrate food web studies.

Molecular gut content analysis via diagnostic PCR or high-throughput sequencing (metabarcoding) of consumers allows unravelling of feeding interactions in a wide range of animals. This is of particular advantage for analyzing the diet of small invertebrates living in opaque habitats such as the soil. Due to their small body size, which complicates dissection, microarthropods are subjected to whole-body DNA extraction-step before their gut content is screened for DNA of their food. This poses the problem that body surface contaminants, such as fungal spores may be incorrectly identified as inge

Detection and Characterization of Invertebrate Iridoviruses Found in Reptiles and Prey Insects in Europe over the Past Two Decades.

Invertebrate iridoviruses (IIVs), while mostly described in a wide range of invertebrate hosts, have also been repeatedly detected in diagnostic samples from poikilothermic vertebrates including reptiles and amphibians. Since iridoviruses from invertebrate and vertebrate hosts differ strongly from one another based not only on host range but also on molecular characteristics, a series of molecular studies and bioassays were performed to characterize and compare IIVs from various hosts and evaluate their ability to infect a vertebrate host. Eight IIV isolates from reptilian and orthopteran host

Sensitivity of aquatic invertebrate resting eggs to SeaKleen (Menadione): a test of potential ballast tank treatment options.

The introduction of aquatic species in resting life stages by the release of ballast water is a less well-known but potentially important invasive species vector. Best-management practices designed to minimize transport of ballast water cannot eliminate this threat, because residual water and sediment are retained in ballast tanks after draining. To evaluate the potential efficacy of chemical treatment of residual material in ship ballast tanks, the present study examined the acute toxicity of the proposed biocide SeaKleen (menadione; Garnett, Watkinsville, GA, USA) on resting eggs of Brachion

An invertebrate embryo test with the apple snail Marisa cornuarietis to assess effects of potential developmental and endocrine disruptors.

A novel invertebrate embryo test with the apple snail, Marisa cornuarietis, comprising a test protocol for the following developmental endpoints is described: formation of eyes and tentacles, heart rate, hatching, weight after hatching. To evaluate effects on embryonic development, the snails were treated in a first step with 250 or 500 microg/l cadmium. Sublethal effects in terms of a significant delay in hatching could be found in the 250 microg/l treated animals, whereas 500 microg/l Cd were lethal for the snail embryos. To test endocrine disrupting chemicals with this protocol, experiments

Bycatch in a bottle: what taxa are recoverable from metabarcoding DNA in historical invertebrate collection preservative fluid?

Natural history museum collections are invaluable repositories of biodiversity, offering insights into life on Earth. Genomic approaches provide powerful tools to characterize biodiversity in these collections. However using these collections for genomics without damaging specimens is a challenge. Here, we develop and test non-destructive DNA metabarcoding methods to capture biodiversity from the preservative fluids of archived insect collections ('Bycatch'). We optimized workflows for extracting and amplifying the partial CO1 locus (CO1) and fungal ITS1 locus from ethanol-based preservative f
