Decoupling the anodic and cathodic behavior in asymmetric electrochemical hydroiodic acid decomposition cell for hydrogen production in the iodine-sulfur thermochemical cycle.

The HI section of the iodine-sulfur (I-S) thermochemical cycle for hydrogen production is one of the most energy-intensive sections and with significant material handling challenges, primarily due to the azeotrope formation and the corrosive nature of the hydroiodic acid-iodine-water mixture (HIx). As an alternative, the single-step direct electrochemical decomposition of the hydroiodic acid (HI) to generate hydrogen can circumvent the challenges associated with the conventional multistep HI section in the I-S cycle. In this work, we present new insights into the electrochemical HI decompositi

Deficiency of thyroid hormone receptor protects retinal pigment epithelium and photoreceptors from cell death in a mouse model of age-related macular degeneration.

Age-related macular degeneration (AMD) is the leading cause of vision loss in the elderly. Progressive dystrophy of the retinal pigment epithelium (RPE) and photoreceptors is the characteristic of dry AMD, and oxidative stress/damage plays a central role in the pathogenic lesion of the disease. Thyroid hormone (TH) regulates cell growth, differentiation, and metabolism, and regulates development/function of photoreceptors and RPE in the retina. Population-/patient-based studies suggest an association of high free-serum TH levels with increased risk of AMD. We recently showed that suppressing T

Double-fortified salt is efficacious in improving indicators of iron deficiency in female Indian tea pickers.

Poor iron status affects 50% of Indian women and compromises work productivity, cognitive performance, and reproduction. Among the many strategies to reduce iron deficiency is the commercial fortification of iodized table salt with iron to produce a double-fortified salt (DFS). The objective of this study was to test the efficacy of DFS in reducing iron deficiency in rural women of reproductive age from northern West Bengal, India. The participants were 212 women between 18 and 55 y of age who worked as full-time tea pickers on a large tea estate. Participants in the randomized, controlled, do

Development of field test kits for determination of microencapsulated iron in double-fortified salt.

BACKGROUND: Efficacy studies have shown that salt double-fortified with iodine and iron can significantly reduce the incidence rates of iron-deficiency anemia and iodine-deficiency disorders. Double-fortified salt can be prepared by mixing microencapsulated iron compounds into conventionally iodated salt. Effective implementation of a double fortification program requires field-based analytical methods to ensure iron levels in double-fortified salt. OBJECTIVE: To develop semiquantitative and qualitative field test kits by adopting standard analytical methods for iron determination to the anal

IL-23 Priming Enhances the Neuroprotective Effects of MSC-Derived Exosomes in Treating Retinal Degeneration.

PURPOSE: Neuroinflammation is a characteristic feature of neurodegenerative diseases. Mesenchymal stem cell-derived exosomes (MSC-exo) have shown neuroprotective effects through immunoregulation, but the therapeutic efficacy remains unsatisfactory. This study aims to enhance the neuroprotective capacity of MSC-exo through IL-23 priming for treating retinal degeneration in mice. METHODS: MSC were primed with IL-23 stimulation in vitro, and subsequently, exosomes (MSC-exo and IL-23-MSC-exo) were isolated and characterized. Two retinal degenerative disease models (NaIO3-induced mice and rd10 mic

Generation of dual mouse models of retinal degeneration with slow and rapid progression driven by ectopic RIP3 expression.

Dry age-related macular degeneration (AMD) is a leading cause of blindness, characterized by progressive loss of retinal pigment epithelium (RPE) and subsequent photoreceptor degeneration. Current experimental models, including sodium iodate-induced injury, fail to fully recapitulate the chronic, age-related progression of the human disease. Although RIP3-mediated necroptosis has been strongly implicated in RPE cell death, its direct contribution to retinal degeneration in vivo remains unclear. To address this limitation, we generated two RIP3 transgenic mouse lines with distinct patterns of R

Inhibiting microRNA-144 potentiates Nrf2-dependent antioxidant signaling in RPE and protects against oxidative stress-induced outer retinal degeneration.

The retinal pigment epithelium (RPE) is consistently exposed to high levels of pro-oxidant and inflammatory stimuli. As such, under normal conditions the antioxidant machinery in the RPE cell is one of the most efficient in the entire body. However, antioxidant defense mechanisms are often impacted negatively by the process of aging and/or degenerative disease leaving RPE susceptible to damage which contributes to retinal dysfunction. Thus, understanding better the mechanisms governing antioxidant responses in RPE is critically important. Here, we evaluated the role of the redox sensitive micr

Effect of dietary canthaxanthin and iodine on the production performance and egg quality of laying hens.

In this study, we aimed to evaluate the effect of canthaxanthin (CX) and iodine (I) on the production of laying hens, on counteracting debilitation of the vitelline membrane, and on inhibiting Salmonella growth in eggs stored at 30°C. Three hundred hens were reared in cages. Birds were divided into six feeding groups (10 hens × 5 repetitions) that were administered 0, 3 or 6 ppm of CX and 1 or 10 ppm of I with their diets. Laying rate, egg weights, and feed conversion ratios were controlled. The quality of fresh eggs was assessed in wks 25-26, 48-50 and 62-63 of hens lives. An additional batch

Systemically transferred hematopoietic stem cells home to the subretinal space and express RPE-65 in a mouse model of retinal pigment epithelium damage.

Stem cell regeneration of damaged tissue has recently been reported in many different organs. Since the loss of retinal pigment epithelium (RPE) in the eye is associated with a major cause of visual loss - specifically, age-related macular degeneration - we investigated whether hematopoietic stem cells (HSC) given systemically can home to the damaged subretinal space and express markers of RPE lineage. Green fluorescent protein (GFP) cells of bone marrow origin were used in a sodium iodate (NaIO(3)) model of RPE damage in the mouse. The optimal time for adoptive transfer of bone marrow-derived

Excessive apoptosis and disordered autophagy flux contribute to the neurotoxicity induced by high iodine in Sprague-Dawley rat.

In recent years, the detrimental effects of high iodine on intelligence are gaining tons of attention, but the relationship between high iodine and neurotoxicity is controversial. This study aimed to explore whether high iodine intake may impair intelligence and the roles of apoptosis and autophagy in high iodine-induced neurotoxicity. The results showed that high iodine exposure reduced brain coefficient and intelligence of rats, and caused histopathological abnormalities in hippocampus. Moreover, high iodine increased hippocampal apoptosis, as confirmed by elevation of apoptotic proteins and

[Uro-CT protocol for the diagnosis of small urothelial neoplasms of urinary tract by quantitative analysis of contrast enhancement and correlation to the histological grading].

In the study of urinary tract, traditional imaging modalities still play a vital role in the diagnosis of urothelial tumors of the upper urinary tract; however, the introduction of multidetector computed tomography has greatly changed the way of evaluation of urological patients. In fact, by means of a multiphasic study protocol is possible to recognize with high sensitivity small urothelial lesions and, moreover, to perform at the same time, an evaluation of local and metastatic extension also. The evaluation of the pattern of contrast enhancement in addition, allows a judgement of biological

Photoreceptor outer segments promote the accumulation of lipid droplets in microglia by reprogramming lipid metabolism.

Retinal degeneration (RD) ultimately leads to blindness owing to progressive photoreceptor loss. Previous studies have shown that microglia play a key role in photoreceptor degeneration through multiple phenotypes. However, the determinants of their phenotypic regulation remain unclear. As microglia migrate into the subretinal space and engulf photoreceptor outer segments (POSs), we aim to investigate how POSs affect microglial activation and the relevant pathways. A classic mouse microglial cell line (BV2) was used to explore the effect of POS exposure on microglia activation. Transcriptomic

Arsenic exposure promotes retinal pigment epithelium dysfunction and oxidative stress via NF-κB pathway.

Age-related macular degeneration (AMD) is a leading cause of blindness in older adults and is closely linked to dysfunction of the retinal pigment epithelium (RPE). Arsenic (As), a ubiquitous environmental toxicant present in drinking water and food, has been implicated in multiple chronic diseases. However, its role in AMD remains unclear. This study aimed to investigate the effects of As exposure on AMD-related retinal injury and to elucidate the underlying molecular mechanisms using in vitro and in vivo experimental models. ARPE-19 cells were treated with sodium iodate (NaIO3) to establish

Astragaloside IV inhibits retinal pigment epithelial cell senescence and reduces IL-1β mRNA stability by targeting FTO-mediated m6A methylation.

BACKGROUND: Resistance to senescence in retinal pigment epithelial (RPE) cells can delay the progression of age-related macular degeneration (AMD). However, the mechanisms underlying RPE cell senescence remain inadequately understood, and effective therapeutic strategies are lacking. While astragaloside IV (Ast) has demonstrated anti-aging properties, its specific effects on RPE cell senescence and potential mechanisms are not yet fully clarified. PURPOSE: This study aimed to explore the impacts of Ast on RPE cell senescence and to uncover the molecular mechanisms involved. METHODS: The ther

Inhibition of oxidative stress-induced epithelial-mesenchymal transition in retinal pigment epithelial cells of age-related macular degeneration model by suppressing ERK activation.

INTRODUCTION: Epithelial-mesenchymal transition (EMT) of retinal pigment epithelial (RPE) cells is related to the pathogenesis of various retinopathies including age-related macular degeneration (AMD). Oxidative stress is the major factor that induces degeneration of RPE cells associated with the etiology of AMD. OBJECTIVES: Sodium iodate (NaIO3) generates intracellular reactive oxygen species (ROS) and is widely used to establish a model of AMD due to the selective induction of retinal degeneration. This study was performed to clarify the effects of multiple NaIO3-stimulated signaling pathwa

Population living in the Red Sea State of Sudan may need urgent intervention to correct the excess dietary iodine intake.

BACKGROUND: Both inadequate and high intakes of iodine are associated with thyroid disease and associated abnormalities. Consumption of foods deficient in iodine induces hypothyroidism. Conversely, excessive intake of the nutrient precipitates hyperthyroidism. Iodine deficiency causes impairment of thyroid hormonogenesis resulting in goiter (struma), cretinism which is associated with increased prenatal and infant mortality, deafness, motor disabilities and mental retardation due to damage during fetal and neonatal brain development. We have assessed the iodine status of school children from t

Activation of periodate by biocarbon-supported multiple modified nanoscale iron for the degradation of bisphenol A in high-temperature aqueous solution.

As reported, the persistent toxic and harmful pollutant bisphenol A (BPA) from industrial emissions has been consistently found in aquatic environments inhabited by humans. Periodate (PI)-based advanced oxidation processes (AOPs) have been employed to degrade BPA, although activating PI proves more challenging compared to other oxidants. A novel nano iron metal catalyst, sulfided nanoscale iron-nickel bimetallic nanoparticle supported on biocarbon (S-(nFe0-Ni)/BC) was synthesized and utilized to activate PI for the removal of BPA. The morphology, structure, and composition of S-(nFe0-Ni)/BC we

Mitochondria: Potential Targets for Protection in Age-Related Macular Degeneration.

Age-related macular degeneration (AMD) is the leading cause of blindness in older adults in developed countries. The molecular mechanisms of disease pathogenesis remain poorly understood; however, evidence suggests that mitochondrial dysfunction may contribute to the progression of the disease. Studies have shown that mitochondrial DNA lesions are increased in the retinal pigment epithelium (RPE) of human patients with the disease and that the number of these lesions increases with disease severity. Additionally, microscopy of human RPE from patients with dry AMD shows severe disruptions in mi
