Contraction-induced muscle damage via voluntary eccentric (lengthening) contractions offers an excellent model for studying muscle adaptation and recovery in humans. Herein we discuss the design of an eccentric exercise protocol to induce damage in the quadriceps muscles, marked by changes in strength, soreness, and plasma creatine kinase levels. This method is simple, ethical, and widely applicable since it is performed in human participants and eliminates the interspecies translation of the results. Subjects perform 300 maximal eccentric contractions of the knee extensor muscles at a speed o

This study aimed to investigate the effect of training background on neuromuscular responses to submaximal isometric fatiguing contraction. Eleven strength-trained (ST) and 11 endurance-trained (ET) males performed maximal voluntary isometric knee extension contractions (MVIC) and a torque steadiness task at 20% MVIC before and immediately after a submaximal isometric contraction at 30% MVIC performed until task failure. High-density surface EMG was recorded from the vastus lateralis muscle. The EMG root mean square (RMS) amplitude, median frequency (MDF) and muscle fibre conduction velocity (

BACKGROUND: Dupuytren's contracture or disease (DD) is a fibro-proliferative disease of the hand that results in the development of scar-like, collagen-rich disease cords within specific palmar fascia bands. Although the molecular pathology of DD is unknown, recent evidence suggests that beta-catenin may play a role. In this study, collagen matrix cultures of primary disease fibroblasts show enhanced contraction and isometric tension-dependent changes in beta-catenin and fibronectin levels.
METHODS: Western blots of beta-catenin and fibronectin levels were determined for control and disease p

The in vitro effects of chlorpromazine on rat cardiac papillary muscle were tested at 10(-6), 10(-5) and 10(-4) M. Mechanical parameters were determined from the contraction and relaxation phases under isotonic and isometric conditions in order to assess contraction, relaxation, contraction-relaxation coupling and load sensitivity of relaxation. The peak power output Emax was determined from the force-velocity relationship. At 10(-6) M, a slight positive inotropic effect was observed, probably related to modifications in cross-bridges kinetics. Negative inotropic effects were observed with 10(

Aim of the study was to assess functional reserves of myocardium in animals with deficit of magnesium during stress tests. Magnesium deficit was modeled by 10 week long magnesium deficient diet. After 54% lowering of magnesium level in erythrocytes we registered left ventricular pressure, myocardial contraction and relaxation rates, heart rate, systolic and diastolic arterial pressure, intensity of structures functioning. Than we subjected hearts of these animals to volume load, graded stimulation of cardiac adrenoreceptors, maximal isometric load by clamping ascending aorta. In animals with m

BACKGROUND: Resistance training (RT) specificity has been confirmed for movement patterns (e.g., multi-joint or single joint), movement velocities, ranges of motion, and contraction types (e.g., dynamic vs isometric). However, a systematic analysis of the effects of dynamic mass-loaded (e.g., isoinertial) RT on dynamic versus isometric strength tests is lacking.
OBJECTIVE: We aimed to examine the specific effects of dynamic RT on dynamic (isoinertial) versus isometric muscle strength, including possible moderating factors (e.g., training length, single joint and multi-joint, upper body and lo

This study investigated the effect of wearable ultrasound-imaging-based visual feedback (UVF) on assisting paretic ankle dorsiflexion training of chronic stroke survivors. Thirty-three participants with unilateral hemiplegia performed maximal isometric contractions on an isokinetic dynamometer in randomized conditions with and without UVF that provided by a wearable ultrasound imaging system. Torque parameters (mean, peak, percentage of maximal voluntary contraction) and tibialis anterior muscle thickness were analyzed across different contraction phases. Statistical comparisons were conducted

BACKGROUND: It has been shown that chronic ankle instability (CAI) leads to abnormalities in neuromuscular control of more proximal joints than the ankle. Although strength of the hip and the ankle muscles has been largely investigated providing concordant results, limited evidence with contrasting results has been reported regarding knee extensor and flexor muscles.
PURPOSE: To investigate maximal and submaximal isometric muscle strength in individuals with CAI.
STUDY DESIGN: Controlled laboratory study.
METHODS: Fifteen participants with unilateral CAI and 15 healthy matched controls were

Interaction of electrocutaneous stimulation with an impaired human motor control system may result in unstable reflex loops causing excessive spastic reactions. These contractions are usually excluded from analysis since the presence of spasm is one of the criteria commonly applied for discarding a contraction. They may, however, provide interesting information on the nature of spasticity. The dorsiflexor muscles of four SCI subjects were activated by means of surface electrical stimulation and the isometric ankle moment was measured. Short bursts of constant stimulation frequency at seven dif

Intake of anthocyanin-rich blackcurrant extract showed muscle fibre-type specific force responses during fatigue development from combined use of voluntary maximal isometric contractions and electrically evoked twitch contractions of the m. quadriceps femoris. In the present exploratory study, we examined the fibre-type specific effects by blackcurrant extract on high-intensity intermittent treadmill running performance to exhaustion. Active males (n = 16, age: 23 ± 3 years, height: 179 ± 5 cm, body mass: 79 ± 3 kg, V˙O2max: 55.3 ± 5.0 mL·kg-1·min-1) completed a fatiguing protocol with 16 volu

BACKGROUND: Strength training (ST) for runners is typically based on low volumes and high intensities. However, alternative approaches emphasizing higher volume and lower intensity, such as protocols with high time under tension (TUT), remain underexplored in this population. Notably, the effects of high-TUT may vary depending on the predominant type of muscle contraction.
OBJECTIVES: To analyze the impact of strength training with high time under tension on different muscle actions in performance-related variables in runners.
METHODS: Thirty-four physically active young males were randomly

BACKGROUND: Motor unit (MU) activation during maximal contractions is lower in children compared with adults. Among adults, discrete MU activation differs, depending on the rate of contraction. We investigated the effect of contraction rate on discrete MU activation in boys and men.
METHODS: Following a habituation session, 14 boys and 20 men completed two experimental sessions for knee extension and wrist flexion, in random order. Maximal voluntary isometric torque (MVIC) was determined before completing trapezoidal isometric contractions (70%MVIC) at low (10%MVIC/s) and high (35%MVIC/s) con

The purpose of this study was to compare electromyographic (EMG) with mechanomyographic (MMG) recordings during isometric conditions, and during a simulated load-lifting task. Twenty-two males (age: 25.5 ± 5.3 years) first performed maximal voluntary contractions (MVC) and submaximal isometric contractions of upper limb muscles at 25%, 50% and 75% MVC. Participants then executed repetitions of a functional activity simulating a load-lifting task above shoulder level, at 25%, 50% and 75% of their maximum activity (based on MVC). The low-frequency part of the accelerometer signal (<5 Hz) was use

PURPOSE: Eccentric quasi-isometric (EQI) contractions have been proposed as a novel training method for safely exposing the musculotendinous system to a large mechanical load/impulse, with few repetitions. However, understanding of this contraction type is rudimentary. We aimed to compare the acute effects of a single session of isotonic EQIs with isokinetic eccentric (ECC) contractions.
METHODS: Fifteen well-trained men performed a session of impulse-equated EQI and ECC knee extensions, with each limb randomly allocated to one contraction type. Immediately PRE, POST, 24/48/72 h, and 7 days p

INTRODUCTION: Populations with knee joint damage, including arthritis, have noted impairments in the regulation of submaximal muscle force. It is difficult to determine the exact cause of such impairments given the joint pathology and associated neuromuscular adaptations. Experimental pain models that have been used to isolate the effects of pain on muscle force regulation have shown impaired force steadiness during acute pain. However, few studies have examined force regulation during dynamic contractions, and these findings have been inconsistent. The goal of the current study was to examine

The aim of this study was to test the hypothesis that contractility of quadriceps femoris muscle during a 15-min period after a sustained maximum voluntary contraction for 1 min is determined by the interaction of posttetanic potentiation, metabolic fatigue, and nonmetabolic fatigue. Eleven healthy untrained men (age, 22.9+/-1.8 years; body weight, 77.5+/-5.2 kg) performed isometric 1-min maximum voluntary contraction at long (90 degrees in knee joint) and short (135 degrees in knee joint) muscle length at two different occasions. Contractility of quadriceps femoris muscle was monitored via th
