Gastrointestinal duplications can affect any part of the alimentary tract and are notorious for their variable presentation. Their association with malrotation and midgut volvulus is rare. We describe an 8-year old boy presented with episodes of abdominal pain. Radiological workup showed whirlpool sign and abnormal relationship of mesenteric vessels. At operation, malrotation with chronic volvulus was found. Incidentally, a jejunal communicating duplication cyst was also noted.

We report the case of a 17-year-old female with symptoms of intermittent small bowel obstruction. Computed tomography scan of the abdomen revealed an intussusception. The patient underwent a laparoscopic-assisted resection of the mass, which proved to be gastric heterotopia of the jejunum. We report on the case, discuss the surgical approach, and review the pertinent literature.

We present a successful laparoscopic treatment of paraesophageal hiatal hernia with an incarceration of the pancreas and jejunum. The patient was a 75-year-old woman who had complaints of epigastric pain and dysphasia. A chest x-ray revealed a mediastinal air-fluid level. Chest computed tomography showed intestinal contents, body and tail of the pancreas, and the splenic artery within the mediastinum. Inflammatory myofibroblastic tumors are rare pseudosarcomatous tumors found in virtually all anatomic sites. Our case report describes an elderly female patient with an inflammatory myofibroblastic tumor in the proximal jejunum, accidentally discovered at laparotomy for an acute abdomen. The localization in the jejunum is a very rare finding, and perforation has not been described before.

BACKGROUND: Carcinoid tumors of the gastrointestinal tract differ in their clinical and histopathologic features, depending on the site of origin. There are few clinicopathologic studies that specifically describe jejunoileal carcinoid tumors.

Intestinal perforation in human immunodeficiency virus-positive patients due solely to Kaposi's sarcoma (KS) has rarely been described. A homosexual man with acquired immunodeficiency syndrome-related KS who presented with an acute abdomen is presented. He was found to have a jejunal perforation through a small KS lesion. There were no infectious organisms identified at the site of perforation.

The retention of a foreign body following surgery is a longstanding and dreaded problem. We report the retention of a fetal scalp monitoring lead that was embedded in the wall of the patient's jejunum and discovered 2 years after cesarean section. In reviewing the American medical literature, we believe this case is, perhaps, unique. The treatment of this entity is discussed as well as ways to help to prevent it.

A focal dilatation of a loop of small bowel has been identified in the left upper quadrant in a series of individuals with suspected appendicitis. The myoelectric activity of gastric antrum and jejunum was recorded in anaesthetised guinea pigs with Ag-AgCl electrodes. The intestinal secretory effects of hyperserotoninemia were studied in conscious dogs with cannulated, exteriorized chronic proximal jejunal segments. A basal absorptive state for water and electrolytes was significantly changed to a secretory state for water, sodium ion, chloride ion, and potassium ion when serotonin was infused intravenously at 30 micrograms/kg per minute.
