To evaluate the acoustic emissions (AE) and kinematic instability (KI) of the osteoarthritic (OA) knee joints, and to compare these signals to radiographic findings. Sixty-six female and 43 male participants aged 44-67 were recruited. On radiography, joint-space narrowing, osteophytes and Kellgren-Lawrence (KL) grade were evaluated. Based on radiography, 54 subjects (the study group) were diagnosed with radiographic OA (KL-grade ≥ 2) while the remaining 55 subjects (KL-grade < 2) formed the control group. AE and KI were recorded with a custom-made prototype and compared with radiographic findi

In cases of chronic distal radioulnar joint (DRUJ) instability without DRUJ arthritis, reconstruction of the mechanical integrity of the radioulnar ligaments of the triangular fibrocartilage complex has been considered an ideal surgical treatment. However, reconstructive methods have several disadvantages. We evaluated volar stabilization of the DRUJ for chronic instability using the pronator quadratus (PQ) to determine whether it provided (1) proper stability, (2) restored wrist function, (3) was relatively convenient, and (4) was associated with a low complication rate. Altogether, 21 patient

BACKGROUND: The aim of the study was to evaluate the incidence of shoulder subluxation in stroke patients and the impact of rehabilitation and presence/absence of fluid in the subhumeral and subdeltoid bursae on the occurrence of instability.
MATERIALS AND METHODS: The study group was composed of 182 patients after stroke, with 108 men and 74 women. 156 of the patients had suffered an ischemic stroke whereas 26 had experienced a hemorrhagic stroke; 90 patients had right-sided paresis and 92 left-sided paresis. The study variables were evaluated by performing, on two occasions, an ultrasound e

OBJECTIVE: To report the prevalence and relationship of self-reported knee instability to physical function in a sample of subjects with knee osteoarthritis (OA), and to discuss the implications of these observations for rehabilitation.
METHODS: Subjects were 105 individuals (80 females) with knee OA who rated their knee instability severity on a 6-point numeric scale in response to the query "To what degree does giving way, buckling, or shifting of the knee affect your level of daily activity?" A principal component analysis was used to combine The Western Ontario and McMaster Universities p

PURPOSE: This study presents an autograft technique for the surgical management of chronic posttraumatic instability of the thumb metacarpophalangeal (MCP) joint by using a bone-retinaculum-bone graft from the second compartment of the extensor retinaculum.
METHODS: The bone-retinaculum-bone graft was harvested from the second compartment. The graft ends were fixed into the host site with screws. Fourteen patients (12 ulnar, 2 radial collateral ligament tears) had the procedure. All patients were reviewed by an independent observer using objective and subjective criteria, the mean follow-up t

Fourteen patients with posttraumatic distal radioulnar joint instability were treated with a reconstruction of the distal radioulnar ligaments. The technique is anatomically accurate, is reproducible, and requires less dissection than previously described techniques. Candidates for the procedure had joint instability and an irreparable triangular fibrocartilage complex. Ten patients had bidirectional instability. Two patients had a concurrent corrective osteotomy of the distal radius for a malunion. The procedure restored stability and relieved symptoms in 12 of 14 patients at 1 to 4 years' fo

In 1981 through 1989 authors performed 160 complex reconstruction operations for instability of the knee joint according to the basic principles of W. Müller, striving to restore all structures injured. 92 patients with 378 operations were controlled. The assessment of the results was based on the physical examination, the measurement of ligament laxity with the K 1000 arthrometer, the opinion of the patients, the level of their activity and Lysholm's functional point system was used. The stability of the knee could be restored in 73 per cent of the cases. The patients have thought the knees,

Background: Distal radioulnar joint (DRUJ) instability associated with forearm bone deformity is difficult to treat because residual osseous malalignment may impair forearm rotation even after triangular fibrocartilage complex (TFCC) reconstruction. This study evaluated the clinical usefulness of preoperative three-dimensional (3D) computer simulation and patient-matched instruments (PMIs) for corrective osteotomy in deformity-related DRUJ instability. Methods: Three patients with chronic DRUJ instability associated with forearm bone deformity underwent corrective osteotomy based on 3D compute

BACKGROUND: Chronic sternoclavicular (SC) joint instability is a relatively rare orthopaedic pathology that is treated with surgical reconstruction when symptoms persist despite adequate nonsurgical treatment. There are a variety of surgical techniques; however, the literature on the topic is limited to small case series.
PURPOSE: To provide a comprehensive systematic review of the surgical variables, clinical outcomes, and complications after SC joint reconstruction.
STUDY DESIGN: Systematic review; Level of evidence, 4.
METHODS: A systematic review of the literature was conducted followin

PURPOSE: Multidirectional instability (MDI) of the glenohumeral joint involves excessive humeral translations with symptoms such as pain or apprehension. As MDI is typically managed through therapeutic exercise, this feasibility study examined the practicality of comparing targeted stabilization and general-strengthening interventions on glenohumeral kinematics and patient-reported outcomes.
SCOPE: Twenty competitive swimmers with MDI were randomized to a targeted rehabilitation group (MDI-EX) or a general shoulder exercise group (GSE). Participants completed 16 exercise sessions over eight w

BACKGROUND: Proximal tibiofibular joint instability (PTJI) is a rare condition, particularly in total knee arthroplasty (TKA) revision, with only one prior case reported. This case highlights the importance of considering PTJI in patients with chronic lateral knee pain and instability following TKA and demonstrates a novel stabilization approach for managing this challenging condition.
CASE DESCRIPTION: A 73-year-old female with a history of multiple knee surgeries presented to our clinic due to increasing lateral knee pain radiating along the syndesmosis, aggravated by activities like squatt

BACKGROUND: Patellofemoral instability (PFI) has several known anatomic factors, including trochlear dysplasia and patellar maltracking. While studies have documented altered lower-extremity gait biomechanics in patients with PFI, the relationship between these biomechanical abnormalities and anatomy has not been thoroughly investigated, particularly during sport-related tasks.
PURPOSE/HYPOTHESIS: The purpose of this study is to examine the associations between preoperative anatomic characteristics and lower-extremity kinematics at sports clearance in adolescents after medial patellofemoral l

Distal radioulnar joint instability is commonly seen after surgical fixation of a distal radial fracture, and surgeons' ability to reliably determine stability on examination is poor. Debate remains regarding whether to fix the ulnar styloid or reinsert the triangular fibrocartilaginous complex. Four surgeons with Level 5 expertise were asked to respond to questions surrounding this debate.

Distal radioulnar joint (DRUJ) instability is a common postoperative complication of distal radius fractures, seriously impacting patients' quality of life. This study investigated its possible influencing factors to determine prognosis and to guide treatment better. We retrospectively included a series of patients with distal radius fractures that underwent volar locking plate fixation. Basic patient information and imaging parameters were collected. The incidence of DRUJ instability during follow-up was recorded, and factors associated with DRUJ instability were determined using univariate a

BACKGROUND Inferior shoulder dislocation is a rare type of glenohumeral joint dislocation. A serious complication to shoulder dislocation is axillary artery injury, which should be taken into consideration early to avoid potentially permanent damage. Literature on artery injury following inferior shoulder dislocation is sparse. CASE REPORT We report the case of a 71-year-old man with a traumatic inferior shoulder dislocation due to a fall. The patient had a medical history of stroke, and thus had a daily intake of 10 mg Warfarin. Previously, he had reported 2 anterior shoulder dislocations. Th

Instability of the proximal tibiofibular joint is an uncommon and often unrecognized cause of lateral knee pain, mechanical symptoms, and instability. The condition results from one of three etiologies: acute traumatic dislocation, chronic or recurrent dislocations, and atraumatic subluxations. Generalized ligamentous laxity is a key predisposing factor for atraumatic subluxation. Instability of this joint may be in the anterolateral, posteromedial, or superior directions. Anterolateral instability is the most common type (80% to 85%) frequently occurring with hyperflexion of the knee with the
