Depressed mothers' judgments about their children: an examination of the depression-distortion hypothesis.

The belief that depressed mothers have distorted perceptions of their children's problems has gained considerable currency in recent years. The empirical basis for this belief at present amounts to little more than reliable demonstrations that depressed mothers tend to report more behavior problems in their children than do nondepressed mothers. An obvious alternative to the distortion interpretation is that depressed mothers are accurate about their children's behavior problems. We examined these competing models by comparing teachers' ratings of children with ratings provided by their mother

Ensemble averaging of symbolic numbers: Criterion mean judgments beat heuristics.

Can observers compute an ensemble mean from symbolic numbers, or is averaging-like performance driven by heuristic shortcuts? We addressed this question using a criterion-based design that yields clear predictions for mean-based integration. In two experiments, participants viewed a 2 × 2 array of four Arabic digits and decided, while timed, whether the arithmetic mean of the set was smaller or larger than 5. In Experiment 1 ( N = 40 ), accuracy and response time showed a robust ensemble-distance effect: decisions were slowest and least accurate when the set mean was closest to 5 and improve

Partisan aesthetics: political orientation modulates aesthetic judgments of propaganda posters.

This study explores how aesthetic perceptions of WWII propaganda posters are modulated by cognitive processing of political information and viewers' Political Orientation, drawing on Redies's unified model of aesthetic experience. In an experiment involving 135 participants, each subject rated a series of randomly drawn Allied and Axis propaganda posters under two exposure conditions: Restricted Exposure (RE) and Unrestricted Exposure (UE). We analyzed ratings in each exposure condition in addition to the between-exposure change in aesthetic appeal, focusing on effects of stimulus-level politi

A cognitive model of moral and nonmoral self-criticism: the role of judgment criteria.

Several authors have developed authoritative theoretical models of self-criticism (SC), each offering unique perspectives that emphasize different aspects of its phenomenology. Through a critical examination of these models, this article proposes a new cognitive framework: the Cognitive model of self-criticism. The primary aim is to conceptualize the judgment criteria through which individuals evaluate themselves as a central cognitive component of the self-critical process and to provide a theoretical framework for explaining the heterogeneity of SC. The model emphasizes the judgment criteria

Using scene proximity judgments to study food-specific recognition ability.

The visual recognition of food depends on both domain-general and domain-specific visual mechanisms. Food-recognition ability negatively correlates with food neophobia (the tendency to avoid novel foods), possibly because the avoidance of novel food may limit perceptual experience that supports food recognition abilities. In prior work this relationship remained when domain-general object shape recognition ability (o) was controlled for, suggesting that this relationship is specific to food recognition. However, it is possible that other general recognition abilities, such as those for color a

Testing the validity of fluency as a metacognitive cue for judgments of distraction in serial recall.

When forming prospective judgments of distraction, people do not have direct metacognitive access to the cognitive effects of task-irrelevant sounds that determine auditory distraction. Instead, they rely on a fluency heuristic, using the subjective ease or difficulty with which a sound is processed as a metacognitive cue. Empirically, this conclusion is supported by metacognitive illusions, with judgments of distraction failing to align with objective distraction. Here we address why and when the fluency heuristic leads to incorrect or correct judgments of distraction. Specifically, we test t

Temporal context shapes multicue integration in auditory time-to-contact judgments.

Anticipating when a moving object will arrive is fundamental for action. While vision-based time-to-contact (TTC) judgment follows reliability-weighted integration of motion and duration cues, it remains unclear whether audition supports similar computations. We asked listeners to judge TTC for moving sounds in motion-only, duration-only, and combined cue conditions, under fast and slow temporal contexts. Combined cues consistently improved precision, but temporal context reshaped bias. Indeed, integration generates remarkable delays in the fast regime and reduced anticipatory errors in the sl

Acute lorazepam administration does not significantly affect moral attitudes or judgments.

Recent scientific studies exploring the neuropsychological foundations of moral decision-making have shown that moral attitudes and evaluations are significantly influenced by emotion, particularly negative emotionality, as well as personality traits such as neuroticism. Further psychopharmacological research has observed that GABAergic agonists are capable of influencing moral decision-making by modifying anxiety-related emotional negativity and/or through cognitive modulation. The aim of this double-blind, crossover design, placebo-controlled study is to evaluate said GABAergic modulation on

The Effect of Moral Judgment on Bystander Cooperation Behavior: The Role of Personal Force.

BACKGROUND: While extensive research has examined the antecedents of utilitarian moral judgment, its subsequent social consequences remain less explored. Drawing on the moral reciprocal partner selection model and the moral intuition modular myopia hypothesis, this study investigates the impact of utilitarian moral judgment on bystander cooperation behavior and the moderating role of personal force. OBJECTIVES: This research aims to determine whether utilitarian moral judgments, compared to non-utilitarian ones, decrease bystander cooperation (Hypothesis 1), and whether this effect is more pr

Quantifying uncert-AI-nty: Testing the accuracy of LLMs' confidence judgments.

The rise of Large Language Model (LLM) chatbots, such as ChatGPT and Gemini, has revolutionized how we access information. These LLMs can answer a wide array of questions on nearly any topic. When humans answer questions, especially difficult or uncertain questions, they often accompany their responses with metacognitive confidence judgments indicating their belief in their accuracy. LLMs are certainly capable of providing confidence judgments, but it is currently unclear how accurate these confidence judgments are. To fill this gap in the literature, the present studies investigate the capabi

Confidence-weighted integration of human and machine judgments for superior decision-making.

Large language models (LLMs) can surpass humans in certain forecasting tasks. What role does this leave for humans in the overall decision process? One possibility is that humans, despite performing worse than LLMs, can still add value when teamed with them. A human and machine team can surpass each individual teammate when team members' confidence is well calibrated and team members diverge in which tasks they find difficult (i.e., calibration and diversity are needed). We simplified and extended a Bayesian approach to combining judgments using a logistic regression framework that integrates

An Unusual Presentation of Paget-Schroetter Syndrome: A Reminder on the Importance of Clinical Judgment.

We discuss the case of a 36-year-old woman who presented with persistent right upper limb swelling and pain. A previous negative D-dimer (434 µg/L (normal range <500 µg/L)) resulted in an inappropriate discharge, despite a significant past medical history. The patient was sent for a right upper limb ultrasound Doppler scan due to persistent pain, and a clot in the right supraclavicular subclavian vein was observed, confirming the diagnosis of Paget-Schroetter syndrome (PSS). The clot was successfully removed under the vascular team in Cardiff without any post-op complications. The literature r

The more random people's preference judgments are, the more they explore in gambling tasks.

BACKGROUND: The decision-making process has been investigated separately in the context of externally guided decision-making (EDM, e.g., a gambling task) and internally guided decision-making (IDM, e.g., a preference judgment). In EDM situations, a predictable correct answer exists, and the value of the chosen item increases when positive feedback is received. On the contrary, in IDM situations, there is no objectively correct answer, and participants must decide based on their own internal criteria, such as preference or belief. In IDM, a choice-induced preference change occurs when the value

The Effect of Own Body Concerns on Judgments of Other Women's Body Size.

We investigated the relationships between healthy women's estimates of their own body size, their body dissatisfaction, and how they subjectively judge the transition from normal to overweight in other women's bodies (the "normal/overweight" boundary). We propose two complementary hypotheses. In the first, participants compare other women to an internalized Western "thin ideal," whose size reflects the observer's own body dissatisfaction. As dissatisfaction increases, so the size of their "thin ideal" reduces, predicting an inverse relationship between the "normal/overweight" boundary and part

Drifts in Prefrontal and Parietal Neuronal Activity Influence Working Memory Judgments.

The dorsolateral prefrontal cortex (dlPFC) plays a critical role in spatial working memory and its activity predicts behavioral responses in delayed response tasks. Here, we addressed if this predictive ability extends to other working memory tasks and if it is present in other brain areas. We trained monkeys to remember the location of a stimulus and determine whether a second stimulus appeared at the same location or not. Neurophysiological recordings were performed in the dorsolateral prefrontal cortex and posterior parietal cortex (PPC). We hypothesized that random drifts causing the peak

Intuitive symbolic magnitude judgments and decision making under risk in adults.

Performance on an intuitive symbolic number skills task-namely the number line estimation task-has previously been found to predict value function curvature in decision making under risk, using a cumulative prospect theory (CPT) model. However there has been no evidence of a similar relationship with the probability weighting function. This is surprising given that both number line estimation and probability weighting can be construed as involving proportion judgment, that is, involving estimating a number on a bounded scale based on its proportional relationship to the whole. In the present w

Trustworthiness and Dominance Personality Traits' Judgments in Adults with Autism Spectrum Disorder.

Autism Spectrum Disorder (ASD) is characterized by impairments in social functioning, communication, and by the presence of repetitive behaviours and restricted interests. Abnormal processing of faces has also been described as a neuropsychological feature of ASD. We investigated the ability to judge two personality traits in adults with ASD in comparison to typically developed adults (TD). We used an eye tracking device to investigate the exploration of faces when participants judged the degree of trustworthiness and dominance of synthetic faces. In sum, we found that adults with ASD were as

Excusing and Justifying Rape Cognitions in Judgments of Sexually Coercive Dating Scenarios.

According to recent analyses, Bumby's RAPE scale of rape-supportive cognitions about women and sexual assault comprises two factors. Excusing rape serves to reduce abusers' culpability for their offending, and ascribing blame to victims, while justifying rape is associated with a sense of sexual entitlement. The distinct effects of these factors on rape judgments have not yet been investigated. We examined whether these belief clusters differentially explained judgments of perpetrator innocence after priming cues related to each of them. We used a cross-sectional design (N = 217) to test our h
