[Recurrent corneal erosion after mechanical trauma. Results of transepithelial phototherapeutic keratectomy].

BACKGROUND: Recurrent corneal erosion is a common clinical disorder characterised by repeated spontaneous breakdown of the corneal epithelium. The pathomechanism is due to abnormalities of the adhesion complex between the corneal epithelium and the stroma. In addition to local medical treatment, bandage lenses, debridement and anterior stromal puncture, patients can also be treated by excimer laser phototherapeutic keratectomy. METHODS: We present a series of 45 eyes where a transepithelial therapeutic excimer photoablation (t-PTK) was carried out after recurrent erosions caused by mechanical

Corneal iron line associated with steep central islands after photorefractive keratectomy.

PURPOSE: To report a new corneal iron deposit after excimer laser photorefractive keratectomy (PRK). METHODS: Two patients with symptomatic persistent steep central islands were noted to have a corneal iron ring at 6 months to 1 year after surgery. This is different from the central iron spot noted in most patients at 1 year. RESULTS: One patient had repeated PRK with improvement of his symptoms and resolution of the iron ring. CONCLUSIONS: A corneal iron ring after excimer laser PRK suggests the presence of a persistent steep central island of stromal origin. Since corneal iron deposition

Lamellar keratectomy and repeat epikeratoplasty following failed epikeratoplasty. A clinicopathologic report.

Although epikeratoplasty (epikeratophakia) for aphakia in children has achieved a high degree of success, there remains a significant incidence of complications, some of which may result in removal of the lenticule. We report a 2-year-old child in whom epikeratoplasty was followed by an acute suppurative keratitis, necessitating removal of the epikeratoplasty lenticule. The recipient bed remained scarred following removal of the lenticule with anterior stomal fibrosis, which precluded good vision. We were able to avoid a penetrating keratoplasty by performing a superficial lamellar keratoplast

Central Toxic Keratopathy after Photorefractive Keratectomy: A Four-Year Case Report.

Introduction: Central toxic keratopathy (CTK) is an uncommon, non-inflammatory opacification of the central cornea after excimer laser refractive surgery, usually within the first postoperative week. The cornea loses central stromal tissue and flattens, and the eye becomes hyperopic. Why it happens is not known; both surgical contaminants and an immune-mediated process have been proposed. Methods: We describe a 26-year-old male physician who underwent bilateral photorefractive keratectomy (PRK) for refractive correction before applying for military service. Results: One week after surgery he h

Corneal Remodeling Using Laser Asymmetric Keratectomy in Patients with Keratoconus Suspect.

Background: The aim of this study was to assess a corneal remodeling technique using laser asymmetric keratectomy (C-LAK) treatment, and its outcome for keratoconus suspect (KCS) by evaluating corneal regularity. Methods: In this retrospective case-control study, 34 eyes of 20 patients with KCS were studied before and 1 year after L-LAK. This new technique could ablate the original refractive errors, the thicker peripheral cornea, and myopia induced by LAK simultaneously (crescentic customized ablation). Before and 1 year after the operation, the refraction, UDVA, keratometry, and corneal symm
