Outpatient care bring together in a single location a large number of patients potentially bearing conventional infectious agents (virus, bacteria, fungi, parasites). This report details the germs potentially involved. We emphasize adenovirus epidemic keratoconjunctivitis, which is particularly prevalent in ophthalmology outpatient care. We analyze the modes of contamination and the means to prevent iatrogenic infections.

PURPOSE: Adenoviral keratoconjunctivitis is the most common infectious disease in ophthalmology. Its clinical forms include epidemic keratoconjunctivitis (EKC) and pharyngoconjunctival fever (PCF). EKC can be complicated by multiple subepithelial infiltrates (MSI) of the cornea, which affect visual outcomes. As at present, artificial intelligence and machine learning are becoming increasingly important not only in the diagnostic imaging field but also in the clinical data science field, we investigated a predictive model for the development of corneal MSI in adenoviral keratoconjunctivitis.

It is useful to define atopic keratoconjunctivitis (AKC) as a non-infectious inflammatory condition of the ocular surface, which is associated with atopy. The pathogenesis of the disorder is not completely understood. The diagnosis is based on the patient's history and the clinical manifestations. Successful management of AKC, which can become a serious condition, requires a multidisciplinary approach that involves prevention, dermatological care and an adequate ophthalmological treatment algorithm.

Infectious Bovine Keratoconjunctivitis (IBK) is one of diseases of a very complex etiology constituting a serious epizootiologic and economic problem in cattle raising on a large scale. The primary and most pathogenic etiological factor is Gram negative Moraxella bovis bacteria. The present work was undertaken to compare the efficiency of different systems of vaccination and determine their influence on forming the profile of different types of immunity.

BACKGROUND: Molluscum contagiosum is a highly infectious viral disease of the skin and mucous membranes. These lesions are found particularly often in children and young adults and are generally self-limiting. Nevertheless, molluscum contagiosum lesions in close vicinity to the eyes should be actively removed if they cause conjunctival or corneal irritation.
CASE REPORT: We report the case of a 14-year-old boy who was treated for approximately 9 months for recurrent chronic keratoconjunctivitis with corneal neovascularization. Careful inspection of the eyelids revealed molluscum contagiosum.

A candidate for a vaccine against infectious bovine keratoconjunctivitis (IBK) has been cloned and characterized from Moraxella bovis. The plb gene encodes a protein of 616 amino acids (molecular mass of ~65.8 kDa) that expresses phospholipase B activity. The bacteria and mycoplasma occurring in the eyes of normal healthy calves were monitored in three groups of animals from purchase at about one week old to slaughter at about 15 months old. Non-haemolytic Moraxella bovis, Branhamella catarrhalis and Mycoplasma bovoculi were all isolated regularly, though their seasonal occurrence varied. The significance of these findings with respect to infectious bovine keratoconjunctivitis is discussed.

The 2,3-dihydroxy-6-bromo-pyrazino-[2,3-beta]-pyrazine is a substance selected during the antiviral screening of pyrazino-pyrazine derivatives. The compound shows antiviral activity in vitro against measles, NDV, some influenza viruses and against herpes simplex and zoster, infectious canine hepatitis and vaccinia viruses. It had no effect on ECHO 9 virus. Therapeutic trials showed activity also on herpetic keratoconjunctivitis experimentally induced in rabbits.

Viral conjunctivitis caused by adenovirus is the most common infectious conjunctivitis. Adenoviruses are highly contagious pathogens. The modes of transmission are mainly through hand to eye contact, ocular secretions, respiratory droplets, and contact with ophthalmic care providers and their medical instruments. The most frequent manifestation of ocular adenoviral infection is epidemic keratoconjunctivitis, followed by pharyngoconjunctival fever. Epidemic keratoconjunctivitis is also the most severe form and presents with watery discharge, hyperemia, cheosis, and ipsilateral lymphadenopathy.

We report the isolation of Ewingella americana from the conjunctivae of a 38 year old female physician with keratoconjunctivitis associated with the use of soft contact lens. The patient was treated successfully with topical ciprofloxacin. The source of the infection remains unknown. All contact lens cleaning materials used by the patient were sterile. Daily injection of 2-deoxy-D-glucose (2-dG) had no protective effect against respiratory tract infection in calves caused by infectious bovine rhinotracheitis virus. It also did not reduce the severity of this infection. Ocular instillation of the drug, however, markedly reduced the severity of viral-induced conjunctivitis and keratoconjunctivitis. The drug was effective when given at the time of ocular infection or after clinical conjunctivitis developed.

The bacterium Moraxella bovis is the causative agent of an economically important disease of cattle: Infectious Bovine Keratoconjunctivitis (IBK), otherwise known as pinkeye. Little is known regarding the structure of the carbohydrates produced by M. bovis. The structure of a capsular polysaccharide from M. bovis (strain Mb25) has been determined using NMR and MS analysis. From these data it is concluded that the polysaccharide is composed of the unmodified chondroitin disaccharide repeat unit.
