Time-resolved neutron computed tomography of hydration kinetics in nanoprimed seeds using chitosan-stabilized iron oxide nanoparticles.

Neutron computed tomography (NCT) was employed to non-invasively monitor hydration kinetics in Lactuca sativa seeds subjected to nanopriming with chitosan-stabilized iron oxide nanoparticles (CS-FeNPs). Integrating a nanomaterial-based seed treatment with radiation imaging, this study demonstrates a novel application of neutron techniques for visualizing dynamic biointerfaces. Exploiting the strong neutron attenuation by hydrogen, NCT enabled time-resolved visualization of internal water transport during 120 h of germination, achieving ∼60 μm spatial resolution sufficient to capture tissue-lev

Arbuscular Mycorrhizal Fungi Increase Nutritional Quality of Soilless Grown Lettuce while Overcoming Low Phosphorus Supply.

Lettuce is widely used for its healthy properties, and it is of interest to increase them with minimal environmental impact. The purpose of this work was to evaluate the effect of the arbuscular mycorrhizal fungus (AMF) Funneliformis mosseae in lettuce plants (Lactuca sativa L. cv. Salinas) cultivated in a soilless system with sub-optimal phosphorus (P) compared with non-inoculated controls at two different P concentrations. Results show that lettuce inoculation with the selected AMF can improve the growth and the nutritional quality of lettuce even at sub-optimal P. Leaf content of chlorophyl

Molecular and functional characterization of cold-adaptive phage LPCS39 for effective control of Cronobacter sakazakii in refrigerated foods.

Cronobacter sakazakii (C. sakazakii) is a foodborne pathogen with the ability to survive and proliferate under cold-chain conditions, thereby posing serious risks to infants and public health. However, most reported phages targeting this pathogen demonstrate limited bacteriolytic activity at low temperatures. In this study, the lytic phage LPCS39 was isolated, characterized, and tested in food matrices including milk, reconstituted powdered infant formula (RPIF), and lettuce. LPCS39 exhibited a broad host range against multiple Cronobacter species, and Enterobacter cloacae, along with high sta

The compound risk of decabromodiphenyl ethane and cadmium to soil nutrient cycling in agroecosystems: Linking the enzyme, microbial community, gene networks to plant stress.

Soil serves as the habitat for numerous organisms and is increasingly threatened from co-pollution of novel brominated flame retardant (NBFRs) and heavy metals (HMs). Focusing on Deca-bromodiphenyl ethane (DBDPE) and cadmium (Cd) as the targets, we constructed a soil-lettuce-earthworm microcosm to explore co-pollution effects in rhizosphere soils. Results showed that DBDPE increased bioavailable Cd fraction to amplified its ecological risks. Co-pollution significantly inhibited the expression of soil functional genes, especially C/N cycling genes, including pgu and abfA in C-cycling and narG,

Recycling composted human feces as biofertilizer for crop production: Assessment of soil and lettuce plant tissue contamination by Escherichia coli and human adenovirus.

Using waste from sewage systems, particularly human excreta, could save resources and increase soil fertility, contributing to nutrient management. However, because of the pathogenic content in human feces, this resource can pose health risks to farmers and consumers. Therefore, this work analyzed the behavior of the microorganisms: Escherichia coli ATCC13706 and human adenovirus (HAdV-2) in the soil and the internal part of the plant tissue during the vegetative stage after applying spiked composted human feces as biofertilizer. In a greenhouse, we simulated the application of the biofertiliz

Understanding inactivation of Listeria monocytogenes and Escherichia coli O157:H7 inoculated on romaine lettuce by emulsified thyme essential oil.

Effects of thyme essential oil (TEO) emulsion (TEE) with cationic charge formulated using cetylpyridinium chloride (CPC) on attachment strength and inactivation of Listeria monocytogenes and Escherichia coli O157:H7 on romaine lettuce surface were examined in this study. Regardless of the inoculation time (2 h and 24 h), pathogen attachment was stronger on the adaxial surface of the romaine lettuce than on the abaxial surface because of the lower roughness of the former. Moreover, attachment strength increased with increasing inoculation time. TEE washing had the strongest inhibitory effect on

Calcium localization and tipburn development in lettuce leaves during early enlargement.

Tissue concentrations of Ca, Mg, and K were determined across immature leaves of lettuce (Lactuca sativa L. 'Buttercrunch') at different stages of enlargement using electron microprobe x-ray analysis. The analysis was with a wavelength dispersive spectrometer to permit detection of low concentrations of Ca. Patterns of mineral accumulation in immature leaves that were exposed were compared to patterns of accumulation in leaves that were enclosed within a developing head. The leaves developing without enclosure were free to transpire and developed normally whereas leaves developing with enclosu

Phytogenotoxicity of thymol and semisynthetic thymoxyacetic acid in pre/post emergence of model plants and weeds.

Herbicides are commonly used to control weed. However, some plants are resistant to such products. To identify less harmful herbicides, it is crucial to search for different mechanisms of action. Thymol is an easily acquired allelopathic compound, capable of producing its respective semisynthetic derivative, thymoxyacetic acid. The aim of this study was to determine the effects of thymol and thymoxyacetic acid molecules as bioherbicides in greenhouse at the concentration of 3 mmol L-1 in pre- and postemergence applications in five species: Amaranthus viridis L., Cucumis sativus L., Lactuca sat

Effects of prescription antibiotics on soil- and root-associated microbiomes and resistomes in an agricultural context.

The use of treated wastewater for crop irrigation is rapidly increasing to respond to the ever-growing demands for water and food resources. However, this practice may contribute to the spread of antibiotic resistant bacteria (ARB) and antibiotic resistant genes (ARGs) in agricultural settings. To evaluate this potential risk, we analyzed microbiomes and resistomes of soil and Lactuca sativa L. (lettuce) root samples from pots irrigated with tap water spiked with 0, 20, or 100 μg L-1 of a mixture of three antibiotics (Trimethoprim, Ofloxacin, Sulfamethoxazole). Utilization of a response-surface technique in the study of plant responses to ozone and sulfur dioxide mixtures.

A second order rotatable design was used to obtain polynomial equations describing the effects of combinations of sulfur dioxide (SO(2)) and ozone (O(3)) on foliar injury and plant growth. The response surfaces derived from these equations were displayed as contour or isometric (3-dimensional) plots. The contour plots aided in the interpretation of the pollutant interactions and were judged easier to use than the isometric plots. Plants of ;Grand Rapids' lettuce (Lactuca sativa L.), ;Cherry Belle' radish (Raphanus sativus L.), and ;Alsweet' pea (Pisum sativum L.) were grown in a controlled env

Hydroxamic acids in Secale cereale L. and the relationship with their antifeedant and allelopathic properties.

Contents of the hydroxamic acids 2,4-dihydroxy-1,4-benzoxazin-3-one (DIBOA), and 2,4-dihydroxy-7-methoxy-1,4-benzoxazin-3-one (DIMBOA) in leaves and roots of 14 cultivars of rye, Secale cereale L., were determined. Dynamics of accumulation in three cultivars were evaluated. DIBOA was the main cyclic hydroxamic acid in leaves but the contents differed significantly between the cultivars. Both DIBOA and DIMBOA were present in the roots. Maximum concentration of DIBOA in leaves and DIMBOA in roots was reached between 48-54 h and 54-72 h after germination, respectively. Antifeedant activity of DIB

Leaf anatomical traits shape lettuce physiological response to vapor pressure deficit and light intensity.

Anatomical plasticity in stomatal, vascular, and mesophyll traits enables lettuce to partially buffer high evaporative and irradiance stress, advancing understanding of crop acclimation under a changing environment. Phenotypic plasticity in leaf anatomical and physiological traits is fundamental for plant acclimation to variable environmental conditions. While the individual effects of light intensity and vapor pressure deficit (VPD) on plant performance are relatively well understood, their interactive influence on leaf structure and function remains underexplored. Here, we investigated the r

Migration of fungicides, antibiotics and resistome in the soil-lettuce system.

The emergence and spread of antibiotic resistance genes (ARGs) have become a serious issue in global agricultural production. However, understanding how these ARGs spread across different spatial scales, especially when exposed to both pesticides and antibiotics, has remained a challenge. Here, metagenomic assembly and binning methodologies were used to determine the spread pathway of ARGs in the soil-lettuce system under individual and combined exposure of fungicides (carbendazim and pyraclostrobin) and antibiotics (chlortetracycline and ciprofloxacin). These agrochemicals not only facilitate

Organic foliar spraying: A method that synchronously reduces mercury methylation in soil and accumulation in vegetable.

Although the use of foliar spraying with organic matter has been extensively studied and applied to reduce heavy metals in plants, research on its application for reducing mercury (Hg) accumulation in plants, particularly the more toxic methylmercury (MeHg), remains scarce. Furthermore, previous researches on the barrier mechanisms of foliar spraying primarily concentrated on the effects of spraying agents on plant physiological and biochemical indicators, with limited focus on their impacts on soil environment. Herein, the dynamic effects and mechanisms of organic foliar spraying materials, i
