A simultaneous hermaphrodite dwarf common carp (Cyprinus carpio carpio morpha hungaricus) from a natural thermal lake, Lake Hévíz, Hungary.

The fauna of Lake Hévíz is unique due to its status as the world's only natural warm-water medicinal lake with a peat bed. A population of dwarf common carp (Cyprinus carpio carpio morpha hungaricus) forms an isolated, self-sustaining community in the lake, adapted to extreme thermal and chemical conditions. During continuous research conducted since 2007, we identified a hermaphroditic individual for the first-time following sampling during the winter period in 2024. Macroscopic examination revealed testicular tissue distinguishable from ovarian tissue. Histological analysis indicated that th

Health effects of shrinking hyper-saline lakes: spatiotemporal modeling of the Lake Urmia drought on the local population, case study of the Shabestar County.

Climate change and its respective environmental impacts, such as dying lakes, is widely acknowledged. Studies on the impact of shrinking hyper-saline lakes suggest severe negative consequences for the health of the affected population. The primary aim was to investigate the relationship between changes in the water level of the hyper-saline Lake Urmia, along with the associated salt release, and the prevalence of hypertension and the general state of health of the local population in Shabestar County north of the lake. Moreover, we sought to map the vulnerability of the local population to the

Predominance of genetically diverse ESBL Escherichia coli identified in resistance mapping of Vembanad Lake, the largest fresh-cum-brackishwater lake of India.

Antimicrobial resistance (AMR) burden in Escherichia coli along the 90 km stretch of Vembanad Lake, Kerala, India, was assessed. Seventy-seven percent of water samples drawn from 35 different stations of the lake harbored E. coli. Antibiotic susceptibility test performed on 116 E. coli isolates revealed resistance to ≥ one antibiotic with 39 AMR profiles in 81%, multidrug resistance in 30%, and extended spectrum β-lactamase (ESBL) producers in 32%. Of all the 15 antibiotics tested, the probability of isolating cefotaxime-resistant E. coli was the highest (P ≤ 0.05) in the lake. Genetically div

Prevalence, source and risk of antibiotic resistance genes in the sediments of Lake Tai (China) deciphered by metagenomic assembly: A comparison with other global lakes.

Lakes are one of the natural reservoirs of antibiotic resistance genes (ARGs) in environments. Long retention times in lakes potentially allow ARGs to persist and may create increased opportunities for the emergence of resistant pathogens. In this study, we investigated the prevalence, source and dissemination risk of ARGs in the sediments of a typical urban lake, Lake Tai (China) which has been a drastic example of water pollution with eutrophication in the world due to its proliferated cyanobacterial blooms. High-throughput profilings of ARGs in the sediments of Lake Tai were characterized w

Where the lake meets the sea: strong reproductive isolation is associated with adaptive divergence between lake resident and anadromous three-spined sticklebacks.

Contact zones between divergent forms of the same species are often characterised by high levels of phenotypic diversity over small geographic distances. What processes are involved in generating such high phenotypic diversity? One possibility is that introgression and recombination between divergent forms in contact zones results in greater phenotypic and genetic polymorphism. Alternatively, strong reproductive isolation between forms may maintain distinct phenotypes, preventing homogenisation by gene flow. Contact zones between divergent freshwater-resident and anadromous stickleback (Gaster

Spatio-temporal dynamics of gastrointestinal helminths infecting four lake whitefish (Coregonus clupeaformis) stocks in northern lakes Michigan and Huron, U.S.A.

This study was undertaken to identify the community composition, structure, and dynamics of helminths infecting the gastrointestinal tract (GIT) of lake whitefish (Coregonus clupeaformis) collected from 4 sites in northern lakes Huron (Cheboygan and De Tour Village) and Michigan (Big Bay de Noc and Naubinway) from fall 2003 through summer 2006. A total of 21,203 helminths was retrieved from the GITs of 1,284 lake whitefish. Approximately 42% (SE  =  1.4%) of the examined lake whitefish were infected with at least 1 helminth species in their GIT, with a mean intensity of 39.4 worms/fish (SE  =

Controlling harmful cyanobacterial blooms in a hyper-eutrophic lake (Lake Taihu, China): the need for a dual nutrient (N & P) management strategy.

Harmful cyanobacterial blooms, reflecting advanced eutrophication, are spreading globally and threaten the sustainability of freshwater ecosystems. Increasingly, non-nitrogen (N(2))-fixing cyanobacteria (e.g., Microcystis) dominate such blooms, indicating that both excessive nitrogen (N) and phosphorus (P) loads may be responsible for their proliferation. Traditionally, watershed nutrient management efforts to control these blooms have focused on reducing P inputs. However, N loading has increased dramatically in many watersheds, promoting blooms of non-N(2) fixers, and altering lake nutrient

Molecular epidemiology of Schistosoma mansoni in Uganda: DNA barcoding reveals substantial genetic diversity within Lake Albert and Lake Victoria populations.

Representative samples of Ugandan Schistosoma mansoni from Lake Albert and Lake Victoria were examined using DNA barcoding, sequence analysis of two partially overlapping regions - ASMIT (396 bp) & MORGAN (617 bp) - of the mitochondrial cytochrome oxidase subunit I (cox1). The Victorian sample exhibited greater nucleotide diversity, 1.4% vs. 1.0%, and a significant population partition appeared as barcodes did not cross-over between lakes. With one exception, Lake Albert populations were more mixed by sampled location, while those from Lake Victoria appeared more secluded. Using statistical pa

Prevalence of fish parasites from Lake Hawassa, Ethiopia.

BACKGROUND: An estimated 200 species of fishes of marine and freshwater fish are known to occur in Ethiopia. Fish parasites are the main cause of the significant threat to the fish biodiversity of Ethiopia's freshwater islands. Lake Hawassa plays a central role in the local economy of the city which supports the artisanal fishing sector. The parasite of the fishes at lake Hawassa are hitherto poorly known and there are limited reports on the type of parasites across different fish hosts such as size, age, sex, condition factor, or other biological or ecological traits. METHODS: A cross-sectio

Global lake phytoplankton proliferation intensifies climate warming.

In lakes, phytoplankton sequester atmospheric carbon dioxide (CO2) and store it in the form of biomass organic carbon (OC); however, only a small fraction of the OC remains buried, while the remaining part is recycled to the atmosphere as CO2 and methane (CH4). This has the potential effect of adding CO2-equivalents (CO2-eq) to the atmosphere and producing a warming effect due to the higher radiative forcing of CH4 relative to CO2. Here we show a 3.1-fold increase in CO2-eq emissions over a 100-year horizon, with the effect increasing with global warming intensity. Climate warming has stimulat

Mercury methylation and demethylation potentials in Arctic lake sediments.

Mercury (Hg) transformations in sediments are key factors in the Hg exposure pathway for wildlife and humans yet are poorly characterized in Arctic lakes. As the Arctic is rapidly warming, it is important to understand how the rates of Hg methylation and demethylation (wich determine Hg bioavailability) change with temperature in lake sediments. Methylation and demethylation potentials were determined for littoral sediments (2.5 m water depth) in two deep and two shallow lakes in the Canadian Arctic using Hg stable isotope tracers at incubation temperatures of 4, 8, or 16 °C for 24 h. Compared

Annual nitrification dynamics in a seasonally ice-covered lake.

We investigated the variability in ammonia oxidation (AO) rates and the presence of ammonia-oxidizing archaea and bacteria (AOB and AOA) over an annual cycle in the water column of a small, seasonnally ice covered, temperate shield lake. AO, the first step of nitrification, was measured in situ using 15N-labelled ammonium (NH4+) at 1% and 10% of photosynthetic active radiation during day and at the same depths during night. AO was active across seasons and light levels, ranging from undetectable to 333 nmol L-1 d-1 with peak activity in winter under ice cover. NH4+ concentration was the single

Water quality modeling of a prairie river-lake system.

Eutrophication of an under-ice river-lake system in Canada has been modeled using the Water Quality Analysis Simulation Program (WASP7). The model was used to assess the potential effect on water quality of increasing inter-basin transfer of water from an upstream reservoir into the Qu'Appelle River system. Although water is currently transferred, the need for increased transfer is a possibility under future water management scenarios to meet water demands in the region. Output from the model indicated that flow augmentation could decrease total ammonia and orthophosphate concentrations especi

[Bile lake post Kasai hepatoportoenterostomy in biliary atresia].

In this case report we describe a boy with extrahepatic biliary atresia who underwent a Kasai hepatoportoenterostomy at six weeks of age. Beginning several weeks post-op, he had recurrent cholangitis inadequately controlled by various antibiotic prophylaxis regimens. Imaging revealed the development of several bile lakes in the liver hilum. Due to the recurrent nature of his cholangitis, and some evidence of acutely impaired biliary drainage, he underwent a refashioning of his portoenterostomy with resultant improved drainage. However, shortly thereafter, the patient developed ongoing fever an

[Natural environment and schistosomiasis transmission in Poyang Lake region].

Schistosomiasis is closely related to natural environmental factors. The changes of environmental factors, such as temperature, hydrology, vegetation, soil etc., all impact the scope and extent of schistosomiasis transmission. Poyang Lake is the largest freshwater lake and one of the major endemic areas with schistosomiasis in China. With global warming, the implementation of the Three Gorges Dam operation, and the Poyang Lake Ecological Economic Planning, the natural environment in Poyang Lake area has been and will continue to change, especially, the water environment and climate environment

Phosphorus speciation in a eutrophic lake by ³¹P NMR spectroscopy.

For eutrophic lakes, patterns of phosphorus (P) measured by standard methods are well documented but provide little information about the components comprising standard operational definitions. Dissolved P (DP) and particulate P (PP) represents important but rarely characterized nutrient pools. Samples from Lake Mendota, Wisconsin, USA were characterized using 31-phosphorus nuclear magnetic resonance spectroscopy ((31)P NMR) during the open water season of 2011 in this unmatched temporal study of aquatic P dynamics. A suite of organic and inorganic P forms was detected in both dissolved and pa

Methylmercury in biota downstream of Arivaca lake, Arizona, USA.

Concentrations of total mercury (Hg) and methylmercury (MeHg) were determined in water, sediment, periphyton, spiders, and amphibians from the streams and desert marsh downstream from Arivaca Lake, Arizona, to better understand their distribution and bioaccumulation. Mean concentrations of MeHg in water ranged from 0.09 to 0.93 ng/L, and mean concentrations of total Hg in sediment ranged from 10.4 to 126 μg/kg. Hg and MeHg in water and sediments downstream from Arivaca Lake were low enough that they did not exceed human health or ecological thresholds. Hg and MeHg between sites ranged from 0.1

Helminth communities of fish as ecological indicators of lake health.

This paper deals largely with the dynamics and changes in the helminth parasite communities of fish along the trophic gradient of lakes. The use of parasitological community data as a bioindicator of environmental health underlines the need to study parasite communities at comparable localities with known pollution levels. The comparison of the conditions in different habitats might be helpful to differentiate between normal fluctuations in ambient conditions and pollution-mediated effects. Therefore, the present study was designed to examine the community structure of parasites in snow trout
