Recent Issues in the Use of Signed Language Assessments for Diagnosis of Language Disorders in Signing Deaf and Hard of Hearing Children.

In recent years, normed signed language assessments have become a useful tool for researchers, practitioners, and advocates. Nevertheless, there are limitations in their application, particularly for the diagnosis of language disorders, and learning disabilities. Here, we discuss some of the available normed, signed language assessments and some of their limitations. We have also provided information related to practices that should lead to improvement in the quality of signed language assessments.

Language Sample Analysis in Bilingual Children: A Meta-Analysis of Diagnostic Accuracy.

PURPOSE: Language sample analysis (LSA) is a common approach in the identification of developmental language disorder (DLD) in bilingual children. Because LSA is often recommended as a less biased assessment method, a better understanding of its diagnostic accuracy is needed to ensure appropriate decision making in clinical applications. This systematic review and meta-analysis synthesized the existing literature on the diagnostic accuracy of LSA in DLD identification for bilingual children. METHOD: We conducted a comprehensive literature search of electronic databases along with supplementar

Direct Instruction Improves Word Learning for Children With Developmental Language Disorder.

PURPOSE: The current study compared the effects of direct instruction versus indirect exposure on multiple aspects of novel word learning for children with developmental language disorder (DLD) and children with typical language development (TLD). METHOD: Participants included 36 children with DLD and 45 children with TLD. All children were in the first grade and 6-8 years of age (Mdn = 7 years; 2 months). Using a between-subjects design, children were randomly assigned to be exposed to novel words and their unfamiliar referents via either direct instruction (each referent presented in isolat

Cognitive processing skills and developmental dyslexia in Chinese.

The purpose of the present study was twofold: (a) to examine the extent to which Chinese dyslexic children experience deficits in phonological and orthographic processing skills and (b) to examine if Chinese dyslexia is associated with deficits in Planning, Attention, Simultaneous, and Successive (PASS) processing. A total of 27 Grade 4 children with dyslexia (DYS), 27 Grade 4 chronological age (CA) controls, and 27 Grade 2 reading age (RA) controls were tested on measures of phonological awareness, rapid naming, phonological memory, PASS, reading accuracy, and reading fluency. The results ind

Effect of middle-ear dysfunction and disease on hearing and language in high-risks infants.

The effect of middle-ear dysfunction and disease on hearing and language development at one year of age was evaluated for 143 high-risk infants. These infants were categorized as normal or abnormal based on otologic history, otoscopic examinations, and on tympanometric examinations. Language was significantly related to gestational age, being delayed by approximately the amount of prematurity. Language scores were therefore adjusted for gestational age. Speech-detection threshold was not related to gestational age, and was used as the measure of hearing. Hearing levels were negatively correlat

Vibrotactile stimulation: case study with a profoundly deaf child.

This case study reports results obtained from a young, profoundly deaf child, M, who was fitted with a single-channel vibrotactile device, the Tactaid I, at 29 months of age. Her progress in speech and language development was evaluated over a 14-month period. During this period, M learned to understand 101 words through lipreading and the Tactaid I, and to produce consistent approximations of 90 words. Her scores on language tests with hearing-impaired norms progressed from below average to above average for her age. M's scores on language tests with hearing norms also reflected significant p

Subcortical vascular dementia: integrating neuropsychological and neuroradiologic data.

BACKGROUND: Research criteria for subcortical vascular dementia are based on radiologic evidence of vascular pathology and greater impairment on tests of executive control than memory. The relationship(s) between neuroradiological evidence of subcortical vascular disease and neuropsychological impairments has not been specified. OBJECTIVE: To define these research criteria, the authors rated the severity of MRI white matter abnormalities (WMAs) and neuropsychological data from patients with dementia. METHODS: Sixty-nine outpatients who met the criteria for dementia were studied with neuropsy

Promoting Reading Achievement in Children With Developmental Language Disorders: What Can We Learn From Research on Specific Language Impairment and Dyslexia?

Purpose Specific language impairment (SLI; see also developmental language disorder) and dyslexia are separate, yet frequently co-occurring disorders that confer risks to reading comprehension and academic achievement. Until recently, most studies of one disorder had little consideration of the other, and each disorder was addressed by different practitioners. However, understanding how the two disorders relate to each other is important for advancing theories about each disorder and improving reading comprehension and academic achievement. The purpose of this clinical focus article is to inte

Relationship of prenatal methylmercury exposure and language/verbal function: a meta-analysis.

BACKGROUND: Developmental neurotoxicity (DNT) is a well-established hazard of methylmercury (MeHg) exposure. Past research on MeHg has highlighted DNT tests of language/verbal function (in particular the Boston naming test (BNT)) as an important aspect of MeHg toxicity. METHODS: We conducted a meta-analysis based on a recent systematic review of MeHg neurodevelopmental dose-response cohort studies published 1998-2025 that reported similarly normed tests of language/verbal function. Meta-analyses were based on recent studies using maternal blood biomarkers or cord blood biomarkers converted in

Development of Past Tense Counterfactual Sentences: Examining Production and Comprehension in Adolescents and Adults.

Purpose The primary purpose of this study was to examine the development of past tense counterfactual (PTCF) sentences ("If the dog had stayed in the house, he would not have bitten the police officer") in young adolescents and young adults, addressing both production and comprehension. The goal was to determine if growth occurs during the years between early adolescence and early adulthood and when or if mastery of these sentences occurs. We also examined the development of past tense irregular verbs to determine growth and mastery. Method The participants included one group of young adolesce

Comparison of idiom comprehension of normal children and children with mental retardation.

This study compared the comprehension of 20 idioms of normal children with children exhibiting mild mental retardation. Sixty-six children comprised three groups: normal 9-year-olds, 9-year-old children with mild mental retardation, and younger normal children matched with the mentally retarded children by receptive vocabulary age. The assessment included both literal and idiomatic contexts with accompanying picture stimuli. The three groups demonstrated high accuracy with the literal contexts. On the idiomatic contexts, the normal children comprehended significantly more idioms than the child

The link between the factuality of verb and the theory of mind ability of Mandarin-speaking children with high-functioning autism.

BACKGROUND: Weak theory of mind (ToM) ability is a core deficit in children with autism. A growing body of work has found that there is a close relation between complement syntax and ToM in autistic children. However, researchers have not yet investigated whether other linguistic components may explain the difficulties in ToM reasoning in autistic children. AIMS: To determine whether verb factuality (i.e., mental and action verbs) is related to ToM ability, as measured by a false belief understanding (FBU) task after controlling the effect of complement syntax for Mandarin-speaking autistic c

Linking L2 proficiency and patterns of functional connectivity during L1 word retrieval.

Second language (L2) learners differ greatly in language proficiency, which is partially explained by variability in native language (L1) skills. The present fMRI study explored the neural underpinnings of the L1-L2 link. Twenty L2 learners completed a tip-of-the-tongue (TOT) task that required retrieving words in L1. Low-proficiency L2 learners showed greater functional connectivity for correct and TOT responses between the left inferior frontal gyrus and right-sided homologues of the temporoparietal regions that support phonological processing (e.g., supramarginal gyrus), possibly reflecting

Long-term benefits after a rhyme-repetition based intervention program for kindergarteners: Better reading and spelling in the first grade.

Oral language proficiency in kindergarten can facilitate the acquisition of reading and writing. However, in diglossic languages, like Arabic, the large gap between the spoken and the formal, modern standard (MSA) varieties of the language may restrict the benefits of oral language proficiency to subsequent literacy skills. Here, we tested, in a randomized controlled study, whether an intervention program, implemented in kindergarten, that familiarized the children with rhymes presented in MSA through recitation, facilitated reading and spelling in first grade. We also tested whether engaging

Irish English PEPS-C (2015 edition) and Learners of ESL.

INTRODUCTION: Profiling Elements of Prosody in Speech-Communication (PEPS-C) is a computerised test for assessing the abilities to understand and use speech prosody in communication. It has been used to obtain a profile of strengths and weaknesses in different prosodic forms and functions for different clinical populations (e.g., autism spectrum disorders, Down syndrome) and second language learners. The 2015 edition of PEPS-C incorporates four new subtests addressing the understanding and production of lexical stress and phrasal stress, and collapses four form subtests (Intonation/Short-Item

Precursors of Reading Performance and Double- and Triple-Deficit Risks in Spanish.

Early literacy skills serve as the best precursors of reading success and risk indicators of the double deficit and triple deficit hypotheses according to the spelling consistency of languages. Our study analyzes the predictive value of phonological awareness, naming speed, and orthographic skills for early reading in Spanish. Participants included 362 Spanish children aged 4 to 5 years. We used data analysis to examine the relationships between these precursors and fluency through a structural equation model and investigated the risk indicators of poor reading performance according to the dou

Different Cognitive Profiles of Patients with Severe Aphasia.

Cognitive dysfunction frequently occurs in aphasic patients and primarily compromises linguistic skills. However, patients suffering from severe aphasia show heterogeneous performance in basic cognition. Our aim was to characterize the cognitive profiles of patients with severe aphasia and to determine whether they also differ as to residual linguistic abilities. We examined 189 patients with severe aphasia with standard language tests and with the CoBaGA (Cognitive Test Battery for Global Aphasia), a battery of nonverbal tests that assesses a wide range of cognitive domains such as attention,

"I can write seven but I can't say it": a case of domain-specific phonological output deficit for numbers.

While it is established that numbers represent a category-specific semantic domain being dissociable from other semantic domains, it is a debated issue whether the category-specific dissociability persists at a level of lexical processing or whether words and number words are processed by the same lexical mechanisms. In most of the documented cases of brain damage, lexical processing of words and number words was equally spared or impaired. Here, we describe the case of a patient who after recovering from his naming disorders, showed a selective deficit in the spoken production of numbers with
