Team work based care in speech and language therapy through web-based tools and methods.

Speech and language therapists (SLTs) are faced daily with a diversity of speech and language disabilities, which are associated with a variety of conditions ranging from client groups with overall cognitive deficits to those with more specific difficulties. It is desirable that those working with such a range of problems and with such a demanding workload, plan care efficiently. Therefore, the introduction of methodologies, reference models of work and tools, which significantly improve the effectiveness of therapy, are particularly welcome. This paper describes the first web-based tool for d

Maximising the Impact of Speech and Language Therapy for Children With Speech Sound Disorder (The MISLToe-SSD) Study: Developing a Core Outcome Set (COS) for Routine Data Collection From UK NHS Speech and Language Therapy Services.

BACKGROUND: Children with speech sound disorder (SSD) are at risk of long-term adverse consequences if appropriate intervention is not provided in a timely way. Although there are interventions of proven efficacy, these are often not implemented with good fidelity in clinical practice. Children with SSD in the United Kingdom are commonly managed in care pathways within NHS and independent speech and language therapy services. It is not known which care pathways are most effective because there is currently no systematic recording or analysis of intervention outcomes for children with SSD. AIM

Comparing endocrine therapy adherence across EHR and claims data by race and ethnicity, language, and insurance.

PURPOSE: We compared adherence measurements across electronic health records (EHRs) and claims data for 79 HR + breast cancer survivors, considering their race, ethnicity, language, and insurance status. METHODS: Adherence was evaluated using the medication possession ratio (MPR) and proportion of days covered (PDC). The correlation between EHR and claims data was assessed with Spearman correlation coefficients, while Kaplan-Meier curves were employed to visualize and analyze the time to the first instance of non-adherence and the time to discontinuation. RESULTS: A total of 75 breast cancer

Behavioral Cough Suppression Therapy: The Speech-Language Pathologist's Role in Assessment and Treatment of Chronic Cough.

Chronic cough affects approximately 10% of adults. A substantial proportion experience persistent symptoms despite comprehensive medical management, significantly impacting quality of life. Behavioral cough suppression therapy (BCST) delivered by speech-language pathologists (SLP) has emerged as an effective, evidence-based intervention for refractory chronic cough (RCC). This review provides practical guidance regarding referral to an SLP, the SLP evaluation process, and the BCST protocol for RCC. Collaboration between the treating SLP and the medical team is essential for management of patie

Embedding Social-Emotional Learning in Elementary School-Based Speech-Language Therapy: A Pilot Randomized Controlled Trial.

PURPOSE: Many students with communication disorders have unique social-emotional needs, yet school speech-language pathologists (SLPs) are not typically trained in how to address those needs. We developed a new training (STIRS [SLP Training to Increase Resilience in Students]) to equip elementary school SLPs to embed social-emotional learning (SEL) practices within their routine speech-language sessions with K-3 students with communication disorders. The primary objective of this pilot trial was to evaluate the preliminary effects and feasibility of STIRS. METHOD: This was a single-blind, par

Positive effects of speech and language therapy group interventions in primary progressive aphasia: A systematic review.

BACKGROUND: Primary progressive aphasia (PPA) is a neurodegenerative condition characterised by a prominent and progressive deterioration in language abilities, which significantly impacts quality of life and interpersonal relationships. Speech and language therapy plays a crucial role in offering interventions. Group intervention is one mode of delivery that could benefit communication functioning and overall wellbeing of people with PPA (pwPPA) and their care partners. Group interventions are also more efficient than one-to-one intervention and may facilitate peer support. AIMS: The aim of

Learning to produce and transcribe cardinal vowels: speech and language therapy students' perception of task difficulty.

Learning vowel transcription skills is crucial to function as a Speech and Language Therapist (SLT). However, vowel transcription is commonly regarded as particularly difficult and therefore often avoided. Despite the importance of accurate transcriptions, little is known about all the factors that influence the process of learning vowel transcription, which usually includes the learning of the Cardinal Vowel (CV) system. There are only a few studies that investigate how CVs are learnt and what factors lead to successful learning. The current study reports students' perceived difficulty of pro

Guideline adherence in speech and language therapy in stroke aftercare. A health insurance claims data analysis.

BACKGROUND: Impairments to comprehension and production of speech (aphasia, dysarthria) and swallowing disorders (dysphagia) are common sequelae of stroke, reducing patients' quality of life and social participation. Treatment oriented on evidence-based guidelines seems likely to improve outcomes. Currently, little is known about guideline adherence in stroke aftercare for the above-mentioned sequelae. This study aims to analyse guideline adherence in the treatment of aphasia, dysarthria and dysphagia after stroke, based on suitable test parameters, and to determine factors that influence the

Communication makes intensive language therapy more efficient: a randomized controlled trial in chronic post-stroke aphasia.

Speech-language therapy is effective in chronic post-stroke aphasia if it is delivered in an intensive fashion. The study investigated whether intensive communicative therapy by practicing everyday language use (e.g. requesting objects and proposing actions) leads to better outcomes than equally intensive conventional treatment (e.g. picture naming). A randomized controlled trial compared intensive conventional speech-language therapy to a social-communicative treatment, called Intensive Language Action Therapy, a further development of Constraint-Induced Aphasia Therapy. Forty-four chronic po

Exploring benefits of speech and language therapy interventions for post-stroke aphasia rehabilitation: A qualitative study.

BACKGROUND: The ability to understand and use language is impacted in people with aphasia, often requiring Speech and language therapy interventions to improve their ability to communicate. Currently, there is limited information concerning the experiences of people with aphasia who have undergone speech therapy in many countries such as Ghana where the practice of speech and language therapy is still in its infancy. Such knowledge is known to enhance the uptake of speech and language therapy services and improve both quality and reach. OBJECTIVE: This study examines the perceived benefits of

Predicting Outcomes of Language Rehabilitation: Prognostic Factors for Immediate and Long-Term Outcomes After Aphasia Therapy.

BACKGROUND: Aphasia therapy is an effective approach to improve language function in chronic aphasia. However, it remains unclear what prognostic factors facilitate therapy response at the individual level. Here, we utilized data from the POLAR (Predicting Outcomes of Language Rehabilitation in Aphasia) trial to (a) determine therapy-induced change in confrontation naming and long-term maintenance of naming gains and (b) examine the extent to which aphasia severity, age, education, time postonset, and cognitive reserve predict naming gains at 1 week, 1 month, and 6 months posttherapy.
