INTRODUCTION: The shifting landscape in Australia's tobacco and cannabis policies and emerging new products and modes of administration may increase experimentation and the risks of addiction to these drugs.
METHODS: We analysed cross-sectional data from the 2019 National Drug Strategy and Household Survey (n = 22,015) of Australians aged 14 and above. Latent class analysis was used to identify distinct groups based on types of tobacco and cannabis products used. The socio-demographic, health-rated correlates and past-year substance use of each latent class was examined.
RESULTS: A four-clas

BACKGROUND: Opioid overdose rates have steadily been increasing in the United States (US) creating what is considered an overdose death crisis. The US has a mixture of public health and punitive policies aimed to address opioid use and the overdose crisis, yet little is known about public opinion relating to opioid use and policy support. Understanding the intersection of public opinion about opioid use disorder (OUD) and policy can be useful for developing interventions to address policy responses to overdose deaths.

BACKGROUND: In the United States, methadone treatment for opioid use disorder is only available at opioid treatment programs (OTPs). In addition to federal regulations, states can enact laws which shape access to OTPs. We aimed to define classes of states according to restrictiveness of state OTP laws and examine population characteristics associated with class membership.
METHODS: A set of laws was extracted from a database of statutes and regulations governing OTPs in 49 states and the District of Columbia as of June 2021. Latent class analysis of laws was used to estimate the probability o

BACKGROUND: From a public health perspective, electronic nicotine delivery devices (ENDS) use may be beneficial for some populations (e.g., smokers who fully switch to ENDS) but detrimental for others (e.g., nonsmokers). Understanding the importance placed on different ENDS product features by user groups can guide interventions and regulations.
METHODS: Participants were US adults who had used ENDS at least once and from a convenience sample drawn from a market research software in 2016. Participants chose between 9 different ENDS product features (harms of use, general effects of use, use a

PURPOSE: Depressive symptoms are among the most common afflictions that plague the parents of children with cancer. Given that resilience is an important factor that inhibits the development and progression of depressive symptoms, it can be harnessed as a potential solution for this psychological issue. This study aimed to identify the latent classes of resilience in the parents of children with cancer and explore the relationships of these classes with depressive symptoms.
METHODS: The study was conducted in three tertiary hospitals in mainland China. The parents of children (0-19 years old)

BACKGROUND: Despite the successes of routine national childhood vaccination programmes, measles remains a public health concern. The purpose of this paper is to investigate how patterns of parental attitudes are linked to the decision-making process for or against MMR vaccination. This exploratory study was designed to identify distinct patterns of attitudes towards or against measles vaccination through Latent Class Analysis (LCA) in a sub-sample of mothers living in the canton of Aargau in Switzerland.
METHODS: Parents of young children below 36 months of age were randomly selected through

AIMS: Despite the detrimental effects of smoking on their health, a high number of adults with Type 2 diabetes continue to smoke. Identifying distinct types of smokers within this population could help tailor and target intervention programmes. This study examined whether smokers with Type 2 diabetes could be classified into different profiles based on smoking habits, socio-economic characteristics and lifestyle factors.
METHODS: A sample of adults with self-reported diabetes was selected from random-digit dialing. Analyses included 383 participants with Type 2 diabetes who were current smoke

BACKGROUND: Substantial uncertainty surrounds the specificity of the Direct Agglutination Test (DAT) for visceral leishmaniasis (VL) in clinical suspects, since no good gold standard exists for unequivocally identifying diseased subjects. We explored the Latent Class Analysis (LCA) modelling technique to circumvent this problem.
PATIENTS AND METHODS: Data on 149 clinical suspects recruited in 1993-96 during a multicentre study in Sudan were re-examined. Clinical data, lymph node and bone marrow aspirate and DAT results were available. IFAT was performed in 1997 on stored filter paper blood of

BACKGROUND AND HYPOTHESIS: Hallucination-like experiences (HLE) are increasingly conceptualized as existing on a continuum ranging from normative perceptual anomalies to clinically significant psychotic symptoms. Although substantial research has examined HLE in nonclinical populations, comparatively limited evidence is available from South Asian contexts, particularly using person-centered approaches. The present study investigated the latent structures of HLE in a nonclinical sample from Jammu and Kashmir using the Launay-Slade Hallucination Scale, extended version (LSHS-E). It was hypothesi

BACKGROUND: Insomnia and its association with mental health problems are prevalent in young populations. While person-centered statistical methods have identified insomnia phenotypes using a wide range of variables, the potential of common screening tools like the Insomnia Severity Index (ISI) for subtyping insomnia is underexplored. This study aimed to investigate insomnia subtypes in university students using ISI items.
METHODS: In a cross-sectional online survey, 1,234 Italian university students (mean age: 23.3 ± 2.4 years) completed the ISI, the Pittsburgh Sleep Quality Index, the Depres

BACKGROUND: Patients with heart failure (HF) are typically classified based on left ventricular ejection fraction (LVEF). However, this may not optimally reflect distinct groups or predict risk. Therefore, alternative classification methods are needed.
OBJECTIVE: Our aim was to classify patients with HF based on sociodemographic and clinical data using latent class analysis, assess if latent classes pose varying risks of mortality and rehospitalization, and explore if these classes offer better risk stratification than LVEF or N-terminal prohormone of brain natriuretic peptide (NT-proBNP) alo

INTRODUCTION: Lifestyle risk behaviors for cardiovascular disease (CVD) often co-occur. However, little is known about their co-occurrence patterns among family caregivers, a high-risk population for CVD. This study aimed to identify distinct latent classes of lifestyle risk behaviors for CVD among caregivers and to examine socio-demographic, health-related, and caregiving characteristics associated with membership in the latent classes.
METHODS: We conducted a cross-sectional secondary data analysis of the 2019 Health Information National Trends Survey 5 Cycle 3, involving 643 unpaid family

BACKGROUND: Post-stroke depression (PSD) frequently co-occurs with other symptoms, such as anxiety, fatigue, sleep disturbances, and stigma, forming complex symptom clusters. While research has identified associations between PSD and specific symptoms, the intricate interrelationships within these clusters remain largely unexplored. This study aimed to examine the longitudinal trajectory of these symptoms, classify distinct symptom cluster profiles, uncover symptom interconnections, identify core symptoms, and explore associated factors.
METHODS: Depressive symptoms, anxiety, fatigue, sleep d
