Lewy Body Dementia Research in Latin America: A Scoping Review.

BACKGROUND: Dementia research in Latin America (LA) has primarily focused on Alzheimer's Disease and Frontotemporal Dementia, while Lewy body dementia (LBD) has been largely forgotten. OBJECTIVE: We aimed to review the available evidence on LBD in LA, offering a comprehensive perspective for understanding the lack of reports and the unique challenges and characteristics of this region. METHODS: We carried out a scoping review in databases: PubMed, EMBASE, LILACS, and Web of Science. Original studies that included participants with LBD were analyzed. RESULTS: Of the 1388 studies identified,

Mapping advance care planning and advance directives in Latin America.

BACKGROUND/AIMS: The extent to which low- and middle-income countries have implemented Advance Care Planning (ACP) and Advance Directives (AD) remains unclear. We aimed to map the current status of ACP/AD in Latin America. METHODS: This cross-sectional, mixed-methods survey of ACP/AD in LA comprised interviews with 18 key informants from 18 out of 20 countries, most of whom were appointed by national Palliative Care Associations. Online interviews were conducted with each informant, covering a range of relevant topics from AD regulations to the use of ACP/AD in the context of end-of-life clin

Inflammatory Skin Disease in Latin America: Treatment Challenges and Opportunities.

PURPOSE: Inflammatory skin diseases, including psoriasis (PsO), atopic dermatitis (AD), hidradenitis suppurativa (HS), and alopecia areata (AA), are chronic immune-mediated disorders that substantially impair the quality of life and impose a growing socioeconomic burden. In Latin America (LA), these conditions unfold in the context of structural inequality, fragmented health systems, and limited epidemiological data. Our objective was to review the epidemiology, awareness, and treatment landscape of PsO, AD, HS, and AA in Latin America, highlighting regional guidelines, real-world studies, and

First Lung Transplantation in Jehovah's Witness Patient in Latin America.

Lung transplantation is a life-saving alternative for patients with end-stage lung disease. The procedure itself has a high risk of bleeding. Jehovah's Witness patients refuse to accept blood products due to religious beliefs. A 48-year-old Jehovah's Witness woman presented with an 8-year history of cough, dyspnea along with progressive worsening of her functional class and quality of life. A diagnosis of autoimmune interstitial lung disease was made, for which cyclophosphamide was administered without improvement of symptoms, and the patient was accepted as a transplant candidate. Transplanta

Hepatitis E virus: An ancient hidden enemy in Latin America.

Hepatitis E virus (HEV) infection is a common cause of acute clinical hepatitis worldwide. HEV is an RNA-containing virus and the only member of the genus Hepevirus in the family Hepeviridae. Human HEV is classified into four genotypes widely distributed across the world. The virus is mainly transmitted via the fecal-oral route, and water-borne epidemics have become characteristic of hepatitis E in developing countries, including those in Latin America. The zoonotic potential of HEV is broadly recognized. Thus, there is an urgent need to re-evaluate virus transmission scenarios and to enforce

Musculoskeletal evaluation in severe haemophilia A patients from Latin America.

There is a paucity of literature on haemophilia treatment in Latin American countries, a region characterized by rapidly improving systems of care, but with substantial disparities in treatment between countries. The aim of this study was to evaluate the musculoskeletal status of haemophilia patients from Latin America and to examine the relationship between musculoskeletal status and treatment practices across countries. The Committee of Latin America on the Therapeutics of Inhibitor Groups conducted a survey of its member country representatives on key aspects of haemophilia treatment in 10

[Systematic review: Epidemiology of gastroesophageal reflux disease in Latin America].

The prevalence of gastroesophageal reflux disease (GERD) is 10% to 20% in Europe and North America, and about 5% in Asia. This systematic review aimed to quantify the prevalence and incidence of GERD in Latin America, and to determine the potential risk factors and co-morbidities. Systematic literature searches were conducted in PubMed, Embase and the Scientific Electronic Library On-line. No language restrictions were imposed. Eight studies were identified that reported on the prevalence of heartburn and/or regurgitation in Latin America. The prevalence of heartburn and/or regurgitation was 1

Intercomparison in cytogenetic dosimetry among five laboratories from Latin America.

As part of a regional International Atomic Energy Agency (IAEA) collaborative project within Latin America, five countries participated in an intercomparison in cytogenetic dosimetry. Coded slides for chromosomal aberrations and micronucleus analyses were prepared by the coordinator laboratory which organized the exercise and sent to the other participating laboratories. For estimates of dose, each laboratory scored the frequency of dicentrics in metaphases and the frequency of micronuclei in binucleated cells. The lymphocytes were irradiated with 60Co gamma-rays (0, 0.75, 1.5 and 3.0 Gy). Ele

Latin American patients' perceptions on osteoporosis diagnosis and treatment: The IOF Patient Advisory Group in Latin America.

UNLABELLED: The study explored osteoporosis patients' views on the disease in six LATAM countries. All were diagnosed for over 3 years, 65% avoiding fragility fractures. Sixteen used osteoporosis drugs, trusting physicians most. Though osteoporosis has moderately impacted their quality of life, all fear a future of falls and loss of independence. PURPOSE: The aim of this study was to understand osteoporosis patients' perceptions, behaviors, and expectations in relation to diagnosis and treatment. METHODS: A convenience sample of 20 patients from six different LATAM countries constituted a fo

Identifying food environment policies and research needs in Latin America and the Caribbean: insights from the Community of Practice in Nutrition and Health in Latin America and the Caribbean (COLANSA).

BACKGROUND: Nutrition-related health issues remain a significant public health challenge in Latin America and the Caribbean (LAC), where rapid transformations in food systems have contributed to increasing obesity and diet-related noncommunicable diseases. Government policies are key to shaping healthier food environments, but their implementation and evaluation vary widely across countries. This study aimed to identify national-level public policies that promote healthy food environments in the LAC region and to outline priority areas for research to strengthen their implementation, from the

Epidemiology and diagnostic of MASLD in Latin America: a yet to be met challenge.

Metabolic dysfunction-associated steatotic liver disease (MASLD) has emerged as a major global health concern, affecting more than one-third of the adult population worldwide. Notably, Latin America exhibits the highest regional prevalence, with recent estimates of 44.4%. This elevated burden is attributed to the convergence of risk factors that render the population particularly vulnerable. These include high rates of obesity and type 2 diabetes mellitus (T2DM), widespread adoption of energy-dense and nutrient-poor dietary patterns, low levels of physical activity, increased alcohol consumpti

Aflatoxin Exposure and Human Health with a Focus on Northern Latin America.

Aflatoxins, mycotoxins produced by Aspergillus flavus and Aspergillus parasiticus, were discovered sixty-five years ago and remain a significant public health threat, particularly amid increasing instances of extreme weather events. Of the four principal forms of aflatoxins found in foods (B1, B2, G1, and G2), aflatoxin B1 is the most potent carcinogen. Aflatoxins commonly contaminate a variety of foodstuffs, with maize being among the most susceptible. Chronic exposure to aflatoxins has been linked to liver cancer, childhood stunting, gallbladder cancer, and other adverse health effects. Due
