Ageing is associated with disrupted reinforcement learning whilst learning to help others is preserved.

Reinforcement learning is a fundamental mechanism displayed by many species. However, adaptive behaviour depends not only on learning about actions and outcomes that affect ourselves, but also those that affect others. Using computational reinforcement learning models, we tested whether young (age 18-36) and older (age 60-80, total n = 152) adults learn to gain rewards for themselves, another person (prosocial), or neither individual (control). Detailed model comparison showed that a model with separate learning rates for each recipient best explained behaviour. Young adults learned faster whe

Applications of machine learning and deep learning to thyroid imaging: where do we stand?

Ultrasonography (US) is the primary diagnostic tool used to assess the risk of malignancy and to inform decision-making regarding the use of fine-needle aspiration (FNA) and postFNA management in patients with thyroid nodules. However, since US image interpretation is operator-dependent and interobserver variability is moderate to substantial, unnecessary FNA and/or diagnostic surgery are common in practice. Artificial intelligence (AI)-based computeraided diagnosis (CAD) systems have been introduced to help with the accurate and consistent interpretation of US features, ultimately leading to

Optimizing Mastery Learning Environments: A New Approach to Deliberate Practice for Simulation-based Learning.

BACKGROUND: Deliberate practice (DP) is a method of mastery learning widely used in healthcare education. Investigations into improved mastery learning environments are important as we move to competency-based educational models. The objective of this pilot project is to create and test the feasibility of a simulation-based learning methodology based on close adherence to the tenants of DP for the acquisition of mastery knowledge. METHODS: We created a new methodology for simulation-based mastery learning modules after review of the tenants of DP. A module was constructed to highlight importa

Learning from demonstration: Teaching a myoelectric prosthesis with an intact limb via reinforcement learning.

Prosthetic arms should restore and extend the capabilities of someone with an amputation. They should move naturally and be able to perform elegant, coordinated movements that approximate those of a biological arm. Despite these objectives, the control of modern-day prostheses is often nonintuitive and taxing. Existing devices and control approaches do not yet give users the ability to effect highly synergistic movements during their daily-life control of a prosthetic device. As a step towards improving the control of prosthetic arms and hands, we introduce an intuitive approach to training a

Learning from other people's fear: amygdala-based social reference learning in social anxiety disorder.

BACKGROUND: Social anxiety disorder involves fear of social objects or situations. Social referencing may play an important role in the acquisition of this fear and could be a key determinant in future biomarkers and treatment pathways. However, the neural underpinnings mediating such learning in social anxiety are unknown. Using event-related functional magnetic resonance imaging, we examined social reference learning in social anxiety disorder. Specifically, would patients with the disorder show increased amygdala activity during social reference learning, and further, following social refer

Foreign language learning difficulties in Italian children: are they associated with other learning difficulties?

A group of seventh- and eighth-grade Italian students with low achievement (LA) in learning English as a foreign language (FL) was selected and compared to a group with high achievement (HA) in FL learning. The two groups were matched for age and nonverbal intelligence. Two experiments were conducted to examine the participants' verbal and nonverbal learning skills, such as native language reading accuracy, speed and comprehension, calculation, and attention and self-regulation. Both experiments showed that the LA group seemed at risk for reading comprehension difficulties, but its reading spe

Stimulus-response learning in long-term cocaine users: acquired equivalence and probabilistic category learning.

OBJECTIVE: The purpose of this study was to examine stimulus-response (S-R) learning in active cocaine users. PARTICIPANTS AND METHODS: Twenty-two cocaine-dependent participants (20 males and 2 females) and 21 non-drug using control participants (19 males and 2 females) who were similar in age and education were administered two computerized learning tasks. The Acquired Equivalence task initially requires learning of simple antecedent-consequent discriminations, but later requires generalization of this learning when the stimuli are presented in novel recombinations. Referential communication abilities of learning-disabled, language-learning-disabled, and normal school-age children.

Past research in referential communication has indicated normally developing children show developmental progression in ability to communicate a specific referent to a listener. In one paradigm subjects were given lists of word-pairs in which one member of each pair was designated as the referent. It was shown that communicating about referents found in word-pairs associated in some way was more difficult than communicating about referents in dissimilar word-pairs. The present study extended this methodology to learning-disabled children. Learning-disabled, language-learning-disabled, and norm

Lessons should be learned: Why did we not learn from the Spanish flu?

COVID-19 has become a global pandemic that has affected millions of people worldwide. The disease is caused by the novel coronavirus that was first reported in Wuhan, China, in December 2019. The virus is highly contagious and can spread from person to person through respiratory droplets when an infected person coughs, sneezes, talks, or breathes. The symptoms of COVID-19 include fever, cough, and shortness of breath, and in severe cases, it can lead to respiratory failure, pneumonia, and death. The Spanish flu, caused by the H1N1 influenza virus, and the COVID-19 pandemic caused by the novel

Path Learning in Individuals With Down Syndrome: The Challenge of Learning Condition and Cognitive Abilities.

Analyzing navigational abilities and related aspects in individuals with Down syndrome (DS) is of considerable interest because of its relevance to everyday life. This study investigates path learning, the conditions favoring it, and the cognitive abilities involved. A group of 30 adults with DS and 32 typically-developing (TD) children matched on receptive vocabulary were shown a 4 × 4 Floor Matrix and asked to repeat increasingly long sequences of steps by walking on the grid. The sequences were presented under two learning conditions, one called Oral instructions (participants received verb

[Birth and succession of a current of learning in Korean medicine: the supporting yang current of learning].

In this study, I aim to reveal how Lee Gyoojoons medicine has given birth to a current of learning, the supporting yang current of learning, and describe its historical significance. Before anything, I'd like to throw the question of whether if there were any currents within the traditional Korean medicine. There are no records of medical currents being widely discussed until now in medical history of Korea; however, the current of Lee Jema's sasang medicine is the most noticeable one. Among the contemporaries of Lee Jema, during the late Chosun, there was also another famed medical practition

Stereotypes of individuals with learning disabilities: views of college students with and without learning disabilities.

To explore possible reasons for low self-identification rates among undergraduates with learning disabilities (LD), we asked students (38 with LD, 100 without LD) attending two large, public, research-intensive universities to respond to a questionnaire designed to assess stereotypes about individuals with LD and conceptions of ability. Responses were coded into six categories of stereotypes about LD (low intelligence, compensation possible, process deficit, nonspecific insurmountable condition, working the system, and other), and into three categories of conceptions of intelligence (entity, i

Motor learning after stroke: what we've learned and what lies ahead.

Each year, there are millions of new stroke survivors globally. As many as 75% of stroke survivors will have impairments in moving their upper limb(s) that compromise daily activities like eating and grooming. Stroke rehabilitation practices often rely on motor learning principles to facilitate the recovery of motor function. Many principles applied in a therapy setting have been derived from studies involving healthy adults, even though stroke-related brain damage may alter these processes. Other studies have focused on the chronic stage of stroke recovery (>6 months post-stroke), despite mos

A theory of cerebellar learning as spike-based reinforcement learning in continuous time and space.

The cerebellum has been considered to perform error-based supervised learning via long-term depression (LTD) at synapses between parallel fibers and Purkinje cells (PCs). Since the discovery of multiple synaptic plasticity other than LTD, recent studies have suggested that synergistic plasticity mechanisms could enhance the learning capability of the cerebellum. Indeed, we have proposed a concept of cerebellar learning as a reinforcement learning (RL) machine. However, there is still a gap between the conceptual algorithm and its detailed implementation. To close this gap, in this research, we

Machine Learning to Improve the Access to the Clinical Pathway for Children with Specific Learning Disabilities.

A prompt diagnosis of specific learning disabilities (SLDs) is prevented by an overwhelmed healthcare system. As teachers lack clinical preparation, school-based screening needs to be improved. This work proposes methods to (1) identify children's profiles, (2) select children who need a visit, and (3) provide a better understanding of the characteristics connected with the start of the clinical pathway. We analyzed data from 364 children referred to clinical consultation. Starting from a 96-item screening questionnaire filled in by teachers at school, we computed a severity score for 19 diffe
