Parasitism of Lacanobia oleracea (lepidoptera) by the ectoparasitic wasp, Eulophus pennicornis, disrupts the cytoskeleton of host haemocytes and suppresses encapsulation in vivo.

Parasitism of Lacanobia oleracea larvae by the ectoparasitic wasp Eulophus pennicornis suppressed host haemocyte-mediated encapsulation of Sephadex DEAE A-25 beads in vivo. Beads dissected out of parasitized larvae had fewer haemocytes associated with them. Moreover, those haemocytes that were associated with the beads tended to retain a rounded configuration and rarely flattened. Similar results were obtained using in vitro encapsulation assays. SDS PAGE indicated that for parasitized and PBS injected larvae, there were some differences in the plasma proteins that bound to Sephadex DEAE A-25

Structure of the Gut and Ovary, with Associated Microbiota Across Life Stages in the Striped Stem Borer Chilo suppressalis (Lepidoptera: Crambidae).

The striped stem borer Chilo suppressalis (Lepidoptera: Crambidae) is one of the most serious pests of water bamboo Zizania latifolia. Microbiota dynamics across the life cycle of C. suppressalis are a prerequisite for comprehending the symbiotic relationship between C. suppressalis and its microbiota. In this study, we characterized the structural features of the gut and ovary, as well as the associated microbiota of C. suppressalis. The gut is anatomically divided into the foregut, midgut and hindgut. Notable structural and ultrastructural differences were observed between adults and larvae,

Vengeful Vines: Cell Death and Neoplasm Formation in Aristolochia (Aristolochiaceae, Piperales) in Response to Oviposition of Troidini (Papilionidae, Lepidoptera) Butterflies.

The ecological interactions of the iconic Troidini swallowtail butterflies and their host plants remain largely unknown, despite the popularity of these butterflies in collections and their significance as conservation flagships. We sought to elucidate the ecological interactions of perhaps the least known life-stage of the butterflies: that of the egg with its host plant. We recorded oviposition location and egg survival rates for Troides helena, Troides amphrysus and Pachliopta antiphus on their host plants Aristolochia acuminata and Aristolochia cf. foveolata through systematic monitoring o

Polymorphism in Ontogenetic Duration in Dendrolimus (Lepidoptera: Lasiocampidae): Diapause, Developmental Variability, and the Role of Facultative Summer Diapause in the Siberian Moth.

Representatives of the genus Dendrolimus are major conifer defoliators whose variable developmental duration complicates phenological forecasting, outbreak prediction, and pest-management timing. This review synthesizes evidence on polymorphism in ontogenetic duration in Dendrolimus and frames it at three levels: intrapopulation, interspecific, and spatial-geographical. We distinguish biological generation time, the interval from oviposition to adult emergence, from calendar span, the number of calendar years occupied by one generation; this distinction is essential for interpreting two- and t

Pepper feeding derivative Brucella sp. in the gut of Spodoptera litura (Lepidoptera: Noctuidae) affect the growth and development of host larvae.

BLTY is a pepper cultivar that has resistance to young larvae of Spodoptera litura Fabricius, whereas FXBX is a pepper cultivar suitable for the growth of S. litura larvae. The obtained microbiomics data suggest that the BLTY leaves fed S. litura larval guts inhabited more Brucella. In this study, two Brucella spp. (2FC-4 and 2FC-15) and one Microbacterium sp. (2FC-22) were isolated from the guts of BLTY and FXBX leaf-fed S. litura, respectively. The loading of 2FC-4 and 2FC-15 reduced the survival rate, average larval weight, diet consumption, pupation rate, and emergence rate of S. litura, w

The impact of lethal and sub-lethal exposure of emamectin benzoate on populations of Spodoptera litura (Lepidoptera: Noctuidae) under laboratory conditions.

Emamectin benzoate is an avermectin bio-insecticide commonly used for managing several insect pests including Spodoptera litura (Fabricius) (Lepidoptera: Noctuidae), a major polyphagous pest of many cultivated crops. The current study was conducted to evaluate the effects of emamectin benzoate on the fitness of S. litura populations exhibiting differential susceptibility to insecticide. The selection process and all the bioassays were carried out using 6-day-old 2nd instar larvae of S. litura. A field-collected population of S. litura was divided into two groups: one selected with emamectin be

The effect of infection with the entomopathogenic fungus Conidiobolus coronatus (Entomopthorales) on eighteen cytokine-like proteins in Galleria mellonella (Lepidoptera) larvae.

BACKGROUND: In response to the replace mammal research models with insects in preliminary immunological studies, interest has grown in invertebrate defense systems. The immunological response is regulated by cytokines; however, while their role in mammals is well understood, little is known of their function in insects. A suitable target for studies into insect immunology is Galleria mellonella (Lepidoptera), the wax moth: a common host for human fungal and bacterial pathogens. G. mellonella is also a perfect subject for studies into the presence of cytokine-like proteins. SPECIFIC OBJECTIVES

Toxicity of Fipronil and Emamectin Benzoate and Their Mixtures Against Cotton Leafworm, Spodoptera littoralis (Lepidoptera: Noctuidae) With Relation to GABA Content.

Fipronil and emamectin benzoate (EMB) are effective insecticides for controlling cotton leafworm, Spodoptera littoralis. Fipronil works by blocking gamma-amino butyric acid (GABA) gated chloride. In contrast, EMB is activating GABA transporters. The objectives of our study were to assess relative toxicity of the technical fipronil and EMB alone and in mixture against S. littoralis. In addition, the GABA content was simultaneously determined using HPLC. Technical fipronil and EMB and their mixtures were applied topically to the fourth-instar larvae, and their LD50 values were estimated after 48

An Improved Systems Approach as a Phytosanitary Measure for Thaumatotibia leucotreta (Lepidoptera: Tortricidae) in Export Citrus Fruit From South Africa.

A systems approach was previously developed for mitigating phytosanitary risk of Thaumatotibia leucotreta (Meyrick) in citrus fruit exported from South Africa, as an alternative to a standalone cold disinfestation treatment. The present study first tested the original systems approach by applying it on a semicommercial scale in 10 Nova mandarin orchards. Fruit were inspected at points in the production, packing, and simulated shipping process, to assess performance of the systems approach. Additional data were obtained from 17 Valencia orange orchards and six packinghouses. In the second part

The Use of F2 Screening for Detection of Resistance to Emamectin Benzoate, Chlorantraniliprole, and Indoxacarb in Australian Populations of Helicoverpa armigera (Lepidoptera: Noctuidae).

The ability to effectively detect changes in susceptibility to insecticides is an integral component of resistance management strategies and is highly dependent upon precision of methods deployed. Between 2013 and 2016, F2 screens were performed for detection of resistance alleles in Helicoverpa armigera (Hübner) to emamectin benzoate, chlorantraniliprole, and indoxacarb in major cropping regions of eastern Australia. Resistance to emamectin benzoate was not detected. There were low but detectable levels of survival at discriminating concentrations of chlorantraniliprole and indoxacarb. Allele

Temperature-dependent phenology of Plutella xylostella (Lepidoptera: Plutellidae): Simulation and visualization of current and future distributions along the Eastern Afromontane.

There is a scarcity of laboratory and field-based results showing the movement of the diamondback moth (DBM) Plutella xylostella (L.) across a spatial scale. We studied the population growth of the diamondback moth (DBM) Plutella xylostella (L.) under six constant temperatures, to understand and predict population changes along altitudinal gradients and under climate change scenarios. Non-linear functions were fitted to continuously model DBM development, mortality, longevity and oviposition. We compiled the best-fitted functions for each life stage to yield a phenology model, which we stochas

Effects of anion and cation inhibitors and carbonic anhydrase inhibitors upon the activity of the gypsy moth (Lepidoptera: Lymantriidae) nucleo-polyhedrovirus.

Twenty chemicals that were reported to act as anion transport inhibitors, cation transport inhibitors, and inhibitors of carbonic anhydrase activity were tested at a 1% concentration (wt:wt) for their effects upon the biological activity of the gypsy moth, Lymantria dispar (L.), nucleopolyhedrovirus (LdMNPV). Among the five anion transport inhibitors tested, flufenamic acid acted as a viral enhancer. None of the seven inhibitors of K+ enhanced viral activity and three (4-aminopyridine, diacetyl, and procaine) significantly reduced the activity of LdMNPV. All four Na+ transport inhibitors (abie

Habitual dietary alteration reduces egg quality and quantity by affecting ovarian development and nutrient accumulation in Bombyx mori (Lepidoptera: Bombycidae).

Substituting fresh mulberry leaves with artificial (compound) diets is a growing trend in industrialized sericulture. However, breeder silkworms (Bombyx mori, Lepidoptera: Bombycidae) reared on artificial diets (ADs) throughout their larval stage exhibit severely impaired reproductive fitness, which is a major bottleneck and the mechanism responsible remains unclear. In this study, we demonstrated that rearing on AD inhibited 20-hydroxyecdysone (20E) signaling during the pupal stage, thereby interfering with the synthesis and transport of vitellogenin and 30Kc19 in the fat body. This perturbat

Evaluation of structured and seed-blend refuges for corn earworm (Lepidoptera: Noctuidae) using emergence cages and screen-bagged ear methods.

The corn earworm, Helicoverpa zea (Boddie), is a major lepidopteran pest of corn (Zea mays L.) in the United States and is widely managed using transgenic corn hybrids expressing Bacillus thuringiensis (Berliner) (Bt) proteins. Seed-blend refuges, in which Bt and non-Bt seeds are mixed in fixed proportions, have been widely adopted as a convenient insect resistance management (IRM) strategy. However, concerns remain about their efficiency in producing susceptible moths compared to a structured block refuge. To evaluate this, five field experiments were conducted across Texas and Georgia during

Bacterial Communities Associated with Whole Eggs and Gut Tissues of Heortia vitessoides Moore (Lepidoptera: Crambidae) Across Developmental Stages and Sexes.

Bacterial communities may affect insect nutrition and development, but their variation across complete metamorphosis remains poorly understood in many forest lepidopteran pests. Heortia vitessoides is an important defoliator of Aquilaria trees, which produce agarwood. In this study, we used 16S rRNA gene sequencing to characterize bacteria associated with whole eggs and gut tissues from larvae, pupae, and adults of H. vitessoides. Whole egg and larval gut samples generally showed higher bacterial richness and diversity than pupal and adult gut samples. Bacterial community composition differed

Revisiting Colobura (Lepidoptera: Nymphalidae): Using integrative taxonomy to identify a new species, C. cryptica sp. nov., and revise geographic boundaries.

The Neotropical butterfly genus Colobura Billberg, 1820 (Nymphalidae) includes widespread, common and conspicuous species whose taxonomy one might expect to be well understood. Using integrative taxonomy-combining morphology (genitalia, larval traits, adult wing patterns, and UV reflectance), genome sequencing (mitochondrial barcodes, complete mitogenomes, and nuclear genomes), and life history data-we describe Colobura cryptica Sapkota, Orellana & Willmott sp. nov., a new species previously conflated with Colobura annulata. Bacterially produced dsRNA targeting SePGRP-LB reduces population fitness of Spodoptera exigua (Lepidoptera: Noctuidae) and increases its susceptibility to SeMNPV.

The beet armyworm, Spodoptera exigua (Hübner) (Lepidoptera: Noctuidae), is an important agricultural pest, and S. exigua multiple nucleopolyhedrovirus (SeMNPV) is a host-specific biological control agent. However, baculovirus efficacy can be limited by host antiviral responses. S. exigua peptidoglycan recognition protein LB (SePGRP-LB) has been identified as an antiviral immune factor, suggesting that its suppression may increase larval susceptibility to SeMNPV. In this study, bacterially produced double-stranded RNA targeting SePGRP-LB (bac-dsPGRP-LB) was orally delivered to larvae to induce

The flavouring agent, 2-octenoic acid kills Galleria mellonella (Lepidoptera: Pyralidae) by affecting their immunocompetent cells and cuticular FFA profiles.

This study investigates the effects of the naturally occurring flavouring agent, trans-2-octenoic acid, on the insect model Galleria mellonella by examining its impact on immunocompetent cells and free fatty acid (FFA) profiles in the cuticle. The value of LD50 for 2-octenoic acid has been calculated as 9.66 µg/mg of insect body mass, this value is outside the GHS scale, indicating that the compound is unlikely to cause acute toxicity after dermal application and is safe for humans and mammals. Thetreatment with 2-octenoic acid caused several changes in the insect defence mechanismes, viz. cha

Differences in susceptibility to chlorantraniliprole between Chilo suppressalis (Lepidoptera: Crambidae) and two dominant parasitic wasps collected from Sichuan Province, China.

Chilo suppressalis Walker (Lepidoptera: Crambidae) is one of the most destructive pests occurring in the rice-growing regions of Asia. Parasitoids, mainly egg parasitoids, have been of interest for several years even with practical used cases. Therefore, the potential impact of insecticides on natural enemies needs great attention. In this study, chlorantraniliprole was evaluated for its impact on C. suppressalis and two dominant parasitic wasps. Bioassays showed that chlorantraniliprole had negligible toxicity to Eriborus terebrans but was significantly toxic to Chelonus munakatae; the mortal
