BACKGROUND: Leprosy is a chronic infectious disease produced by Mycobacterium leprae. In 1997 Venezuela reached the goal of elimination of leprosy as a public health problem (according to the World Health Organization a prevalence rate of ≤ 1/10,000 inhabitants), but five states still had prevalence rates over that goal. For this study we selected Cojedes State, where prevalence rates remain over the elimination goal.
OBJECTIVE: Evaluate the real leprosy situation in high-prevalence areas of Cojedes State.
MATERIALS AND METHODS: Seven communities of Cojedes State were selected because they h

INTRODUCTION: Leprosy remains a public health challenge in India, not merely due to medical reasons but because of persistent stigma and deep-rooted cultural beliefs that influence health-seeking behaviour. This case report describes a 28-year-old woman with borderline tuberculoid leprosy who delayed seeking medical care due to cultural beliefs.
RESULT: After an 8-month delay in seeking medical care, the patient presented with a hypopigmented, hypoesthetic patch over the right knee, along with thickening of the right common peroneal nerve. Notably, two sets of intersecting tattoo lines were o

Nerve function impairment (NFI) in leprosy results in serious deformities of the face, hands, and feet and contributes significantly to the stigma associated with the disease. Most literature on NFI focuses on either type 1 reaction-associated NFI, or the silent neuropathy, whereas NFI associated with type 2 reaction (T2R) is less well researched. The latter, however, can be more refractory to conventional treatment, not solely owing to its recurrent nature. We present a therapeutically challenging case of a 31-year-old male with borderline lepromatous leprosy with recurrent T2R associated wit

Leprosy is a chronic infectious disease caused by Mycobacterium leprae and, depending on the host immune status, presents different clinical forms. This report describes the case of a 46-year-old man who had hypoesthetic lesions in the infrahyoid region for 30 days. The bacilloscopy was negative. The anatomopathological examination showed alterations corresponding to the tuberculoid pole (epithelioid histiocytes) and virchowian pole (foamy histiocytes), compatible with borderline-virchowian leprosy (Ridley and Jopling classification). Rapid tests for HIV I, II, and syphilis were positive, with

Leprosy is an infectious disease caused by the intracellular bacillus Mycobacterium leprae that mainly affects the skin and peripheral nerves. One of the most intriguing aspects of leprosy is the diversity of its clinical forms. Paucibacillary patients are characterized as having less than five skin lesions and rare bacilli while the lesions in multibacillary patients are disseminated with voluminous bacilli. The chronic course of leprosy is often interrupted by acute episodes of an inflammatory immunological response classified as either reversal reaction or erythema nodosum leprosum (ENL). A

BACKGROUND: Dapsone hypersensitivity syndrome (DHS) is a rare, but potentially life-threatening reaction to dapsone.
OBJECTIVE: Evaluation of immunological factors involved in the sparing of borderline-lepromatous (BL) leprosy patches by the severe exanthema related to DHS.
METHODS: The authors describe a 19-year-old man with borderline-lepromatous leprosy with a recent diffuse rash, sparing only the hypochromic patches of leprosy, generalized lymphadenopathy, hepatomegaly, and jaundice 25 days after the start of multibacillary multidrug therapy.
RESULTS: Laboratory testing was remarkable f

BACKGROUND: Histoid leprosy is a rare form of multibacillary leprosy as the result of secondary or even primary resistance to dapsone. The etiopathogenesis has not been clarified up to now.
METHODS: An immunohistochemical study was carried out for the expression of various markers on epidermal and dermal cell populations using sections of frozen skin specimens from 5 patients with histoid leprosy as compared to specimens from 7 tuberculoid and 7 lepromatous patients.
RESULTS: Dendritic epidermal cells, identified by monoclonal antibodies against CD1, HLA-DR, CD45, and CD36, were found reduce

BACKGROUND: Histoid leprosy is a rare variant of lepromatous leprosy characterized by varied morphological and histopathological appearance while having a high bacillary load. These factors contribute to an ominous threat to the elimination status of leprosy, whereby these patients may act as a reservoir of infection.
OBJECTIVE: To identify the clinicopathological characteristics of histoid leprosy in Chitwan, Nepal.
METHODS: A retrospective hospital-based study spanning a period of 6 years was carried out at our department. All cases clinically and histopathologically suggestive of histoid

A case-control study was carried out in Tanzania to determine the relative risk of those with HIV-1 infection for getting leprosy. Cases were 93 consecutively diagnosed patients with leprosy aged 15-54 years from the Mwanza Region. Controls were a representative population sample of 4161 people drawn from a stratified cluster sample from urban areas, roadside settlements, and rural villages. HIV-1 infection was determined by enzyme-linked immunosorbent assay (ELISA); Western blot was used when the ELISA result was indeterminate. The HIV-1 prevalence in leprosy cases was 10% in rural (7 of 72)

BACKGROUND: Thailand has achieved leprosy elimination at the national level. However, sporadic cases still occur in rural areas, especially in the southern provinces. This study investigates the spatiotemporal distribution and burden of leprosy in Health Region 12 over 25 years, highlighting high-burden districts.
METHODS: A retrospective, population-based cross-sectional study was conducted using leprosy surveillance data from 1999 to 2023 across 77 districts in seven southern provinces. A two-step analytical approach was used to analyse leprosy case counts classified by gender-age group, ye

Gansu in northwestern China has maintained leprosy elimination at the national and county level, yet localized transmission persists in certain endemic foci. This 70-year analysis (1950-2020) assessed the impact of key control strategies using an interrupted time-series analysis of new case detection rate (NCDR) with break points at the 1958 "survey-isolate-treat" strategy and the 1987 multidrug therapy (MDT) rollout. Among 4,872 registered cases, NCDR rose initially and then declined steadily to 0.027/100,000 by 2020. Significant geographic clustering was observed in southeastern counties (Mo

OBJECTIVE: To synthesize the scientific evidence regarding the prevalence of leprosy relapse following multidrug therapy.
METHOD: A systematic review was conducted following the JBI methodology for prevalence studies and reported according to the guidelines, with the registration number CRD42020177141. The inclusion criteria were based on the mnemonics (Population, Condition, Context). Population: Individuals of any age or sex diagnosed with leprosy relapse and previously treated with paucibacillary or multibacillary multidrug therapy. Conditions: Leprosy relapse after multidrug therapy, meas

Macrophages play an important role in attempt to eliminate mycobacteria, via production of cytokines, including interleukin-1, and interleukin-12. Bacillus Calmitte Guerin (BCG) vaccination, known to induce interleukin-1β in tuberculosis, was originally aimed at tuberculosis control, but it showed efficacy against leprosy. Our aim was to estimate serum levels of interleukin-1β and interleukin-12, in leprosy, and to assess the impact of previous BCG vaccination on their levels. Serum interleukin-1β and interleukin-12 p70 were estimated in 43 leprotic patients and 43 controls by enzyme-linked im

Hansen's disease (HD) is rare in the United States, but a steady number of cases are diagnosed annually, especially in southern areas where armadillos are present. Challenges associated with erythema nodosum leprosum (ENL), a complication of multibacillary leprosy, call for novel regimens. We present a case of a man with recalcitrant ENL from HD likely acquired in the United States. He required a combination of 4 drugs to control chronic ENL.

Leprosy is a chronic infectious disease that remains a public health challenge in Brazil, particularly in the Northeast Region, which still has a high incidence of cases. By analyzing the geographical distribution and demographic characteristics of patients, we aim to describe the sociodemographic profile of leprosy cases in the Northeast Region of Brazil between 2019 and 2023. An ecological analysis was conducted using data from the Notifiable Diseases Information System (SINAN). The variables studied included the frequency of diagnoses by state, sex, education level, race, age group, and cli

Leprosy and tuberculosis (TB) are both chronic granulomatous infections caused by bacilli of the genus Mycobacterium. The simultaneous occurrence of cutaneous tuberculosis and leprosy is rare. We report a 56-year-old male presenting with painful erythematous nodules and plaques over the face and extremities for 1 week, along with asymptomatic right axillary lesions for 1 year. Examination revealed tender nodules and plaques with ulceration on the face and extremities, and firm, matted subcutaneous nodules with sinus tracts in the axilla. Leprosy is a chronic neglected infectious disease that affects over 200,000 people each year and causes disabilities in more than four million people in Asia, Africa, and Latin America. The disease can appear with a wide spectrum of clinical forms, and therefore the clinical suspicion is often difficult. Refugees and migrants from endemic countries affected by leprosy can remain undiagnosed in Europe due to the unpreparedness of clinicians. We retrospectively describe the characteristics of 55 refugees/migrants with a diagnosis of leprosy established in Italy from 2009 to 2018. Continents of o

BACKGROUND: Leprosy is an infectious disease that remains hyperendemic in several Brazilian regions. Patient contacts face a higher risk for infection and illness, which can subsequently contribute to the persistence of the disease.
OBJECTIVE: This study investigates the risk factors associated with anti-phenolic glycolipid-I (anti-PGL-I) seropositivity and leprosy development among contacts of leprosy patients in a highly endemic region.
METHODS: A cohort of 629 contacts from the Almenara microregion, Minas Gerais, Brazil, was followed from 1998 to 2018. Our research group assessed risk fac

BACKGROUND: Nail changes in leprotic patients are not specific to leprosy, and may be observed in other peripheral neuropathies. Diabetes is one of the diseases that present with nail dystrophy secondary to peripheral neuropathy, vasculopathy, trauma and infections. Therefore, nail changes in diabetic neuropathy are expected to be very similar to that of leprosy.
OBJECTIVES: To evaluate the frequency and pattern of nail changes in Egyptian leprotic patients with the different spectrums of the disease, and to compare nail changes in leprosy with those seen in patients with diabetic neuropathy.

INTRODUCTION: The World Health Organization field leprosy classification is based on the number of skin lesions: paucibacillary leprosy (1-5 skin lesions), and multibacillary leprosy (more than 5 skin lesions). Worldwide, about 250,000 new cases of leprosy are reported each year, and about 2 million people have leprosy-related disabilities.
METHODS AND OUTCOMES: We conducted a systematic review and aimed to answer the following clinical questions: What are the effects of interventions to prevent leprosy? What are the effects of treatments for leprosy? We searched: Medline, Embase, The Cochran
