We investigated the regulation of insulin-like growth factor 1 (IGF-1) expression after sciatic nerve crush using leukemia inhibitory factor (LIF)-deficient mice. One day post-crush, IGF-1 mRNA levels were lower in the LIF-deficient mouse nerve than in the wild type nerve. A comparison was made between the diagnostic value of assaying nickel-induced lymphocyte proliferation (lymphocyte transformation test, LTT) and migration inhibition factor (MIF) production in nickel contact sensitivity. We describe a female infant born at term to consanguineous parents, with a suspicion of skeletal dysplasia in utero. At birth, she had short limbs, camptodactyly, dysphagia leading to nasogastric tube feeds, and skeletal survey demonstrating dysplasia of long bones and spine. We here examined the role of the interleukin-6 (IL-6) family of cytokines in endothelin-1 (ET-1)-induced hypertrophic responses using cultured cardiac myocytes of neonatal rats.
