Hormones such as glucocorticoids (colloquially referred to as "stress hormones") have important effects on animal behavior and life-history traits, yet most of this understanding has come through correlative studies. While experimental studies offer the ability to assign causality, there are important methodological concerns that are often not considered when manipulating hormones, including glucocorticoids, in wild animals. In this study, we examined how experimental elevations of cortisol concentrations in wild North American red squirrels (Tamiasciurus hudsonicus) affected their hypothalami

BACKGROUND: In South Korea, the leading cause of youth death has been suicide for about 20 years. In this study, we conducted a multi-method psychological autopsy to identify the psychiatric diagnosis, developmental history, personality traits, family history, school life, warning signs of suicide, and risk factors related to suicide for the first time in Korea.
METHODS: This was a postmortem, retrospective, and descriptive study of 36 adolescents who died by suicide between August 2015 and July 2021 in South Korea. We obtained qualitative and quantitative data from the Korean Psychological A

To test the hypothesis that traits of aggression and impulsivity correlate negatively with central serotonergic system function in a nonpatient population, a standard fenfluramine challenge (for assessment of serotonergic responsivity) and behavioral measurements germane to aggression/impulsivity were administered to a community-derived sample of 119 men and women. In men, peak prolactin responses to fenfluramine correlated significantly with an interview-assessed life history of aggression (r = -.40, p < .002), the Barratt Impulsiveness Scale (r = -.30, p < .03), and traits of Conscientiousne

Individual differences in behavior impact ecological interactions and potentially influence life-history strategies. However, comparative studies examining how behavioral variation is structured in closely related, ecologically similar species remain limited. We investigated the expression of movement traits and the structure of behavioral variation in young-of-year (YOY, 0-group) Atlantic cod (Gadus morhua) and saithe (Pollachius virens) using repeated laboratory trials over 3 months in solitary open-field and mirror contexts, followed by additional paired conspecific trials using the same ex

Atrax robustus is an iconic Australian spider because the venom can be lethal to humans. Moreover, some of the venom biomolecules have promise as therapeutic and bioinsecticidal leads. Nonetheless, aspects related to the life history and behaviour of this species, which might influence changes in venom components, have been overlooked. We assessed different behavioural traits (antipredator behaviour, defensiveness and activity) of juveniles and adult females across different contexts (predation, conspecific tolerance and exploration of a new territory) and stimuli (puff of air versus prod) ove

Plant-parasitic nematodes (PPNs) are highly successful economically important parasites but our knowledge about them derives almost exclusively from agricultural systems. This crop-centred perspective overlooks the evolutionary processes that shaped nematode parasitism and how host plants cope with these parasites long before agriculture emerged. Here, we review the PPN perspective on agriculture by integrating the natural phylogeography, ecology, reproductive biology, and coevolutionary history of PPNs. We discuss how various life-history traits facilitated the adaptation of PPNs to agricultu

Understanding which mammalian species participate in the sylvatic cycle of Trypanosoma cruzi is vital for clarifying the ecological processes that maintain Chagas disease transmission. Although more than 100 mammal species have been reported as naturally infected, the actual diversity of hosts is much broader. In this study, we employed a trait-based, machine-learning framework to evaluate mammals associated with natural infection. Data concerning life-history traits, morphological characteristics, environmental factors, trophic ecology, habitat use, biogeographic distributions, and spatial ov

For parasites that require multiple hosts to complete their development, genetic interplay with one host may impact parasite transmission and establishment in subsequent hosts. In this study, we used microsatellite loci to address whether the genetic background of snail intermediate hosts influences life-history traits and transmission patterns of dioecious trematode parasites in their definitive hosts. We performed experimental Schistosoma mansoni infections utilizing two allopatric populations of Biomphalaria glabrata snails and assessed intensities and sex ratios of adult parasites in mouse

Atmospheric CO2 is rising at unprecedented rates. While its physiological effects on plants are well-documented, the direct evolutionary impact on plant pathogens remains unknown. We investigated how CO2 interacts with other abiotic factors to shape the evolutionary potential of pathogens. We combined controlled CO2 gradient experiments with quantitative genetics to assess the interactive effects of CO2, temperature and geography on Phytophthora infestans. We measured intrinsic growth rate and aggressiveness, the two key pathogen traits, across seven geographically distinct populations and par

The sexual life-history traits of Schistosoma mansoni have been reviewed to compare male and female performance and pathogenicity against Biomphalaria glabrata during the life-cycle. A meta-analysis was used on pooled results from different experiments. In most cases, there was no difference between males and females but male cercariae were significantly more infectious than female cercariae. Conversely, cercarial production and cercarial life-span were significantly greater for females than for males; furthermore, females have a tendency to occur in molluscs of larger size. Each difference is

For teleost fishes, the relationship between morphometric traits can provide significant insight into species life history, however gathering such data for noncommercial species can prove challenging. Here, we use data collected opportunistically from fisheries bycatch and stranding events to assess growth scaling over orders of magnitude in the ocean sunfish (genus Mola). Intriguingly, the confidence intervals for the relationship between length and mass suggests that isometric scaling is likely, a growth pattern rarely observed in fishes owing to the scaling of supportive structures. These d

In this study we examine differences in the occurrence of life history stages of the destructive fish ectoparasite Argulus foliaceus (L., 1758) on eight fish species (stickleback, rudd, roach, gudgeon, bream, tench, crucian carp and common carp) sampled from a mixed-species recreational fishing lake on nine occasions during late spring and summer. Total numbers ofA. foliaceus, as well as the number of larval, juvenile and adult parasite stages, from each fish were recorded along with the fish species. Lice generally exhibited an aggregated distribution approximating a negative binomial distrib

Immune defenses are crucial for survival but costly to develop and maintain. Increased immune investment is therefore hypothesized to trade-off with other life-history traits. Here, we examined innate and adaptive immune responses to environmental heterogeneity in wild Antarctic fur seals. In a fully crossed, repeated measures design, we sampled 100 pups and their mothers from colonies of contrasting density during seasons of contrasting food availability. Biometric and cortisol data as well as blood for the analysis of 13 immune and oxidative status markers were collected at two key life-hist

BACKGROUND: Decision-making has been found to be altered in suicide attempters and may represent a neuropsychological trait of vulnerability to suicidal behaviour. Environmental stressors such as adverse life events and interpersonal problems have been demonstrated to precipitate suicidal acts in vulnerable people. However, the link between vulnerability and stressors is complex and may even be circular. In the present study, we hypothesized that impaired decision-making may be associated with an increased risk of negative life events in suicide attempters.
METHODS: Forty-eight patients with

Resources are limited and cannot be used for multiple functions simultaneously, leading to trade-offs between life-history traits. The detection of such trade-offs depends on resource acquisition (total amount of resources) and allocation (distribution of resources between traits). When among-individual variation in acquisition exceeds that of allocation, trade-offs tend to be masked. The availability of food resources is shaped by environmental conditions, and thus is likely to vary over time and space. Thus, notable differences can arise in the strength but also the detection of trade-offs w

Global change drivers, including climate warming, elevated CO2, nitrogen deposition, extreme climate events, heavy metal pollution, and biological invasions, interact in complex ways to reconfigure terrestrial ecosystems. This review synthesizes recent advances to develop a framework linking plant molecular responses to ecosystem management. We first examine how abiotic stressors reshape plant physiology and traits through defense signaling, secondary metabolite synthesis, and life-history adjustments. We then analyze how these plant-level changes cascade upward to restructure interspecific ne

Different lineages of organisms diversify over time at different rates, in part as a consequence of the characteristics of the species in these lineages. Certain suites of traits possessed by species within a clade may determine rates of diversification, with some particular combinations of characters acting synergistically to either limit or promote diversification; the most successful combinations may also emerge repeatedly in different clades via convergent evolution. Here, the association between species characters and diversification is investigated amongst 21 independent lineages of arth
