Genetic and molecular basis of abnormal BOLD signaling variability in patients with major depressive disorder after electroconvulsive therapy.

Electroconvulsive therapy (ECT) is an effective and rapid neuromodulatory intervention for treatment-resistant major depressive disorders (MDD). However, the precise mechanisms underlying their efficacies remain unclear. Resting-state functional magnetic resonance imaging (fMRI) data were collected from 84 individuals with MDD and healthy controls before and after ECT, and coefficient of variation of the BOLD signal (CVBOLD) analysis was combined with region of interest (ROI) functional connectivity (FC) analysis. To assess the reliability of the antidepressant mechanism of ECT, we analyzed th

Carotid arterial blowout after organ preserving chemoradiation therapy in hypopharyngeal cancer.

Laryngeal preserving concurrent chemoradiation has been advocated for hypopharyngeal cancers. The use of radiotherapy (RT) in the larynx could lead to increased rates of radionecrosis. In this study, we investigated a rare but disastrous complication, carotid blow-out syndrome (CBS), related with the persistent radionecrosis. Retrospective cohort study. This retrospective study enrolled hypopharyngeal cancer patients with biopsy-proven pharyngeal and laryngeal chondronecrosis (PLCRN), which was rated by the Chandler Grading System. From 2002 to 2018, a total of 346 hypopharygeal cancer patient

Treatment of tongue base masses in children by transoral robotic surgery.

The feasibility and effectiveness of transoral robotic surgery (TORS) in children with tongue base masses (TBMs) were evaluated. Eight pediatric patients who were treated with TORS for TBMs between January 2010 and January 2016 at a tertiary hospital included in the study. All pathologies were congenital lesions: four were lingual thyroglossal ductus cysts (LTGDCs), one was a minor salivary gland tumor, one was a vallecular cyst, one was a bronchogenic cyst, and one was an ectopic thyroid tissue. TORS was performed successfully in all cases. The mean robotic set-up and exposure time was 13.0 ±

Characteristics of lingual thyroglossal duct cysts under flexible laryngoscopy and treatment approaches.

OBJECTIVES: Lingual thyroglossal duct cysts (LTGDCs) are clinically rare and easily misdiagnosed as epiglottic cysts. Misdiagnosis leads to mistreatment; thus, simple diagnosis is important. This study aimed to investigate the characteristics of LTGDCs with flexible laryngoscopy and imaging, improve their diagnosis and explore surgical methods for patients undergoing an initial operation and patients with recurrence. METHODS: In total, 10 patients with LTGDCs were admitted from April 2014 to December 2020.By reviewing the diagnosis and treatment of the first typical case, the characteristics o

An unexpected variation of occipital and ascending pharyngeal arteries: clinical implications.

PURPOSE: The eight typical External Carotid Artery (ECA) branches are the superior thyroid artery, ascending pharyngeal artery, lingual artery, facial artery, occipital artery, posterior auricular artery, maxillary artery, and superficial temporal artery. The Internal Carotid Artery (ICA) has no branches in the cervical region before entering the carotid canal. We identified a variant of the Occipital Artery (OA) and Ascending Pharyngeal Artery (APA) originating in the cervical portion of the ICA and wish to explore the clinical implications this variation may have. METHODS: Between August an

Three-dimensional angiography of the submental artery perforator flap.

BACKGROUND: The submental flap, based on a large branch of the facial artery, is an excellent flap option which is most commonly used for head and neck reconstruction. The purpose of this report is to clarify aspects of the anatomy of the submental flap in order to improve the utility of this flap. METHODS: Ten cadavers were injected with a modified lead oxide-gelatin mixture. Four cadavers were selected for three-dimensional reconstruction using a spiral computed tomography scanner and specialised volume-rendering software. Dissection, angiography and photography of each layer were performed

Causal effect of thyroid function on cortical brain structure: A two-sample Mendelian randomization study.

BACKGROUND: The causal relationship between variations in thyroid dysfunction and brain structure remains elusive. We intended to probe into this causal connection using a Mendelian randomization (MR) approach. METHODS: Aggregated statistics from the genome-wide Association Study (GWAS) on Autoimmune thyroid dysfunction were obtained from the FinnGen database, including autoimmune hyperthyroidism (N = 2,190) and autoimmune hypothyroidism (N = 49,055). Aggregate statistics on cortical area and thickness for GWAS were obtained from the Enhancing NeuroImaging Genetics through Meta-Analysis (ENIG

Grey matter abnormalities in untreated hyperthyroidism: a voxel-based morphometry study using the DARTEL approach.

OBJECTIVE: Hyperthyroidism is frequently associated with pronounced neuropsychiatric symptoms such as impulsiveness, irritability, poor concentration, and memory impairments. Functional neuroimaging has revealed changes in cerebral metabolism in hyperthyroidism, but regional changes in cortical morphology associated with specific neurological deficits have not been studied so far. To investigate the pathophysiology underlying hyperthyroid-associated neural dysfunction, we compared grey matter volume (GMV) between adult hyperthyroid patients and matched healthy controls using voxel-based morpho

Medial Sural Artery Perforator Flap for Tongue and Oral Cavity Reconstruction With Native Tongue Tip Preservation: Report of Three Cases.

Compartmental hemiglossectomy for oral cavity squamous cell carcinoma creates composite tongue/floor defects in which balancing mobility, bulk, and a supple lining is challenging. We report three consecutive reconstructions using a medial sural artery perforator (MSAP) flap, emphasizing preservation of the uninvolved tongue tip left intentionally unattached to maximize residual mobility. A 28-year-old woman, a 50-year-old man, and a 36-year-old woman with lateral tongue SCC underwent compartmental resection with selective neck dissection; defects measured ~4 × 3, 5 × 4, and 6 × 5 cm. Altered functional connectivity strength of primary visual cortex in subjects with thyroid-associated ophthalmopathy.

Our objective was to explore the disparities in the intrinsic functional connectivity (FC) patterns of primary visual cortex (V1) between patients with thyroid-associated ophthalmopathy (TAO) and healthy controls (HCs) utilizing resting-state functional MRI. Twenty-one patients with TAO (14 males and 7 females; mean age: 54.17 ± 4.83 years) and 21 well-matched HCs (14 males and 7 females; mean age: 55.17 ± 5.37 years) underwent functional MRI scans in the resting-state. We assessed modifications in the intrinsic FC patterns of the V1 in TAO patients using the FC method. Subsequently, the ident

Cribriform adenocarcinoma of minor salivary gland origin principally affecting the tongue: characterization of new entity.

We present a series of 23 cases of a distinctive, hitherto poorly recognized low-grade adenocarcinoma, with several histologic features reminiscent of papillary carcinoma of the thyroid, and which mostly but not exclusively occurs in the tongue. All the tumors were unencapsulated and were divided into lobules that were composed mainly of cribriform and solid growth patterns. Therefore, we propose the name "cribriform adenocarcinoma of minor salivary gland origin (CAMSG)." All the patients were adults with a mean age at diagnosis of 55.8 years (range, 25 to 85 y). Fourteen of the 23 tumors were
