Lions (Panthera leo) and cheetah (Acinonyx jubatus) from the Serengeti National Park and Ngorongoro Crater Conservation Area, Tanzania were examined for the presence of blood protozoans. Twenty-eight percent of the lions were infected with Trypanosoma sp. and the prevalence of trypanosome infection varied significantly between adjacent habitats. All of the animals were infected with Hepatozoon sp. and a Theileria sp.-like piroplasm that was morphologically indistinguishable from Theileria felis.

Toxoplasma gondii can cause lifelong infection in most definitive and intermediate hosts. Serological evidence of T. gondii infection has been documented in both captive and free-ranging lions. We collected samples from 40 captive African lions (Panthera leo) in China from 2017 to 2025 and investigated T. gondii in these animals via serological, bioassay, and molecular methods. Assisted reproductive technologies (ART), including artificial insemination (AI), represent promising tools for the conservation of genetic resources of vulnerable wild felid species. This study reports the application of AI in African lions ( Panthera leo), using fresh semen collected via urethral catheterization under general anesthesia. Semen samples were obtained from two adult male lions and subsequently analyzed for volume, motility, concentration, and morphology. A qualified sample, measuring 0.4 mL in volume, was extended at a 1:4 ratio, using 1.6 mL of a Tris-egg yolk-based extender.

Malignant adipocytic neoplasia is rare among nonhuman primates. We report the gross and microscopic features of a retroperitoneal liposarcoma with myxofibrosarcoma-like dedifferentiation in a free-ranging juvenile golden-headed lion tamarin (Leontopithecus chrysomelas). To our knowledge, this is the first report of such tumor subtype in New World primates.
