Potential therapeutic mechanism of deep brain stimulation of the nucleus accumbens in obsessive-compulsive disorder.

Deep brain stimulation (DBS) of the nucleus accumbens (NAc) (NAc-DBS) is an effective solution to refractory obsessive-compulsive disorder (OCD). However, evidence for the neurobiological mechanisms of OCD and the effect of NAc-DBS is still lacking. One hypothesis is that the electrophysiological activities in the NAc are modulated by DBS, and another hypothesis is that the activities of neurotransmitters in the NAc are influenced by DBS. To investigate these potential alterations, rats with quinpirole (QNP)- induced OCD were treated with DBS of the core part of NAc. Then, extracellular spikes

Online prediction of optimal deep brain stimulation contacts from local field potentials in Parkinson's disease.

Selecting optimal contacts for chronic deep-brain stimulation (DBS) requires a monopolar review, involving time-consuming manual testing by trained personnel, often causing patient discomfort. Neural biomarkers, such as local field potentials (LFP), could streamline this process. This study aimed to validate LFP recordings from chronically implanted neurostimulators for guiding clinical contact-level selection. We retrospectively analysed bipolar LFP recordings from Parkinson's disease patients across three centres (Netherlands: 68, Switzerland: 21, Germany: 32). Using beta-band power measures

Age-related changes across the primary and secondary somatosensory areas: an analysis of neuromagnetic oscillatory activities.

OBJECTIVE: Age-related changes are well documented in the primary somatosensory cortex (SI). Based on previous somatosensory evoked potential studies, the amplitude of N20 typically increases with age probably due to cortical disinhibition. However, less is known about age-related change in the secondary somatosensory cortex (SII). The current study quantified age-related changes across SI and SII mainly based on oscillatory activity indices measured with magnetoencephalography. METHODS: We recorded somatosensory evoked magnetic fields (SEFs) to right median nerve stimulation in healthy young

Utilization of combined remote sensing techniques to detect environmental variables influencing malaria vector densities in rural West Africa.

INTRODUCTION: The use of remote sensing has found its way into the field of epidemiology within the last decades. With the increased sensor resolution of recent and future satellites new possibilities emerge for high resolution risk modeling and risk mapping. METHODS: A SPOT 5 satellite image, taken during the rainy season 2009 was used for calculating indices by combining the image's spectral bands. Besides the widely used Normalized Difference Vegetation Index (NDVI) other indices were tested for significant correlation against field observations. Multiple steps, including the detection of

Closed-Loop Deep Brain Stimulation Effects on Parkinsonian Motor Symptoms in a Non-Human Primate - Is Beta Enough?

BACKGROUND: Incorporating feedback controls based on real-time measures of pathological brain activity may improve deep brain stimulation (DBS) approaches for the treatment of Parkinson's disease (PD). Excessive beta oscillations in subthalamic nucleus (STN) local field potentials (LFP) have been proposed as a potential biomarker for closed-loop DBS (CL-DBS). OBJECTIVE: In a non-human primate PD model we compared CL-DBS, which delivered stimulation only when STN LFP beta activity was elevated, to traditional continuous DBS (tDBS). METHODS: Therapeutic effects of CL-DBS and tDBS relative to t

Cryolipolysis: A promising nonsurgical technique for localized fat reduction.

BACKGROUND: Cryolipolysis, also known as fat freezing, is a nonsurgical technique specialized for localized fat reduction. Utilizing targeted cold exposure to adipose tissue, cryolipolysis devices induce cellular apoptosis in adipocytes while sparing surrounding tissues, resulting in the selective disruption of fat cells and subsequent removal of damaged cells by macrophages. A reduction of the fat layer produces a noninvasive cosmetic benefit that provides an accessible alternative to liposuction. Objective and subjective measurements have demonstrated significant reduction in fat volume and

Safety of non-invasive brain stimulation in patients with implants: a computational risk assessment.

Objective.Non-invasive brain stimulation (NIBS) methodologies, such as transcranial electric stimulation (tES) are increasingly employed for therapeutic, diagnostic, or research purposes. The concurrent presence of active/passive implants can pose safety risks, affect the NIBS delivery, or generate confounding signals. A systematic investigation is required to understand the interaction mechanisms, quantify exposure, assess risks, and establish guidance for NIBS applications.Approach.We used measurements, simplified generic, and detailed anatomical modeling to: (i) systematically analyze expos

Enhancing Parathyroid Gland Visualization Using a Near Infrared Fluorescence-Based Overlay Imaging System.

BACKGROUND: Misidentifying parathyroid glands (PGs) during thyroidectomies or parathyroidectomies could significantly increase postoperative morbidity. Imaging systems based on near infrared autofluorescence (NIRAF) detection can localize PGs with high accuracy. These devices, however, depict NIRAF images on remote display monitors, where images lack spatial context and comparability with actual surgical field of view. In this study, we designed an overlay tissue imaging system (OTIS) that detects tissue NIRAF and back-projects the collected signal as a visible image directly onto the surgical

A history of mass spectrometry in Australia.

An interest in mass spectrometry in Australia can be traced back to the 1920s with an early correspondence with Francis Aston who first visited these shores a decade earlier. The region has a rich tradition in both the development of the field and its application, from early measurements of ionization and appearance potentials by Jim Morrison at the Council for Scientific and Industrial Research (CSIR) around 1950 to the design and construction of instrumentation including the first use of a triple quadrupole mass spectrometer for tandem mass spectrometry, the first suite of programs to simula

Study of proximity-coupled magnetic anisotropy in V-doped SnTe using spin resonance and magnetic measurements.

SnTe is a topological crystalline insulator with topological surface states (TSSs) protected by crystal symmetries. This, along with an associated Berry-phase π, results in a positive quantum correction in electrical conductivity, known as weak antilocalization (WAL). The applied magnetic field breaks down the TSS protection, resulting in a cusp-like negative magnetoconductance (MC). SnTe has a large amount (1021 cm-3) of Sn vacancies, leading to considerable bulk conductivity with a parabolic background over the WAL MC. In this work, we observe an enhancement of the WAL signal in V-doped SnTe

Localization-driven exchange contrast in diffusion exchange spectroscopy.

Diffusion exchange spectroscopy (DEXSY) is a method to probe exchange between domains of varying confinement. Analyses of DEXSY signals typically assume Gaussian diffusion within distinct compartments and first-order exchange kinetics between them. Other situations can yield DEXSY signal contrast with respect to mixing time, however, leading to potentially erroneous interpretation. Here, we demonstrate that a one-dimensional compartment with reflecting boundaries and without relaxation can by itself produce such contrast in certain experimental regimes. The origin of this contrast is the diffu

Region-specific adenosinergic modulation of the slow-cortical rhythm in urethane-anesthetized rats.

Slow cortical rhythm (SCR) is a rhythmic alternation of UP and DOWN states during sleep and anesthesia. SCR-associated slow waves reflect homeostatic sleep functions. Adenosine accumulating during prolonged wakefulness and sleep deprivation (SD) may play a role in the delta power increment during recovery sleep. NREM sleep is a local, use-dependent process of the brain. In the present study, direct effect of adenosine on UP and DOWN states was tested by topical application to frontal, somatosensory and visual cortices, respectively, in urethane-anesthetized rats. Local field potentials (LFPs)

Radiation Dose Optimisation Through Artificial Intelligence (AI)-based Auto-Thorax Collimation.

INTRODUCTION: Artificial intelligence (AI) is increasingly adopted in digital radiography to enhance workflow efficiency, standardisation and support for radiation dose optimisation. Auto-thorax collimation (ATC) has been introduced to automate field size selection in chest X-ray (CXR) imaging; however, its clinical performance and impact on collimation consistency in routine chest X-ray practice require further evaluation. METHODS: A single-centre retrospective study analysed 400 posteroanterior (PA) erect CXRs sourced from the Picture Archiving and Communication System (PACS) and local imag

Evaluation of two inactivated vaccines against Campylobacter fetus in an experimental bovine model: immunological survey and genital clearance in heifers.

Bovine Genital Campylobacteriosis is a venereal disease caused by Campylobacter fetus subsp. venerealis (Cfv), responsible for reproductive losses in breeding systems that rely on natural service. Here, we evaluated 2 vaccines against Cfv infection in heifers experimentally challenged by intravaginal route, assessing bacterial persistence and immunological systemic and local response. Forty-four heifers were assigned to 4 groups: G1 (vaccine A), G2 (vaccine B), G3 (infected group with placebo) and G4 (negative control). Experimental intravaginal challenge with Cfv was carried out in G1, G2 and

Detection, characterization, and enrollment of donors of Ebola convalescent plasma in Sierra Leone.

BACKGROUND: Passive therapy with convalescent plasma provides an early opportunity to intervene in Ebola virus disease (EVD). Methods for field screening and selection of potential donors and quantifying plasma antibody are needed. STUDY DESIGN AND METHODS: Recombinant Ebola virus glycoprotein (EBOV GP) was formatted into immunoglobulin G-capture, competitive, and double-antigen bridging enzyme immunoassays (EIAs). EVD survivors in Freetown, Sierra Leone, were recruited as potential plasma donors and assessed locally using sera alone and/or paired sera and oral fluids (ORFs). Uninfected contr

Neuroplastic changes in auditory cortex induced by long-duration "non-traumatic" noise exposures are triggered by deficits in the neural output of the cochlea.

Long-term exposure to moderate intensity noise that does not cause measureable hearing loss can cause striking changes in sound-evoked neural activity in auditory cortex.  It is unclear if these changes originate in the cortex or result from functional deficits in the neural output of the cochlea.  To explore this issue, rats were exposed for 6-weeks to 18-24 kHz noise at 45, 65 or 85 dB SPL and then compared the noise-induced changes in the cochlear compound action potential (CAP) with the neurophysiological alterations in the anterior auditory field (AAF) of auditory cortex. The 45-dB exposu

Lucky Rhythms in Orbitofrontal Cortex Bias Gambling Decisions in Humans.

It is well established that emotions influence our decisions, yet the neural basis of this biasing effect is not well understood. Here we directly recorded local field potentials from the OrbitoFrontal Cortex (OFC) in five human subjects performing a financial decision-making task. We observed a striking increase in gamma-band (36-50 Hz) oscillatory activity that reflected subjects' decisions to make riskier choices. Additionally, these gamma rhythms were linked back to mismatched expectations or "luck" occurring in past trials. Specifically, when a subject expected to win but lost, the trial

The neural basis of resting-state fMRI functional connectivity in fronto-limbic circuits revealed by chemogenetic manipulation.

Measures of fMRI resting-state functional connectivity (rs-FC) are an essential tool for basic and clinical investigations of fronto-limbic circuits. Understanding the relationship between rs-FC and the underlying patterns of neural activity in these circuits is therefore vital. Here we introduced inhibitory designer receptors exclusively activated by designer drugs (DREADDs) into the amygdala of two male macaques. We evaluated the causal effect of activating the DREADD receptors on rs-FC and neural activity within circuits connecting amygdala and frontal cortex. Activating the inhibitory DREA
