Loneliness Predicts Symptom Outcomes Following a Digital Intervention for Appearance Concerns.

Digital mental health interventions have proliferated in the past decade, though it is not clear whether social isolation or loneliness influences their efficacy. The present study sought to determine whether loneliness predicted symptom outcomes following a digital treatment for appearance concerns. Women elevated in appearance concerns (N = 203) were randomized to one of two interventions where participants were either instructed to reduce appearance-related safety behaviors (ARSB; i.e., actions people take to reduce appearance anxiety) or general unhealthy behaviors. Both treatments led to

Trouble in paradise? Emotional and social loneliness among international retirement migrants.

People who migrate at a later age are vulnerable to loneliness: They are challenged to maintain social ties in the origin country while establishing new ties in the destination. In the present study, we investigate (a) the differences in loneliness levels between retirement migrants and older adults who reside in their country of origin (nonmigrants) and (b) the determinants of emotional and social loneliness among retirement migrants. We employ the survey of Dutch retirement migrants abroad (DRM, 2021: Henkens et al., 2022), including 4,995 Dutch retirement migrants residing in 40 destination

Loneliness Links Adverse Childhood Experiences to Mortality Risk Across 26 Years.

OBJECTIVES: Adverse childhood experiences (ACEs) are associated with increased mortality risk. Individuals with a history of certain adversity during childhood tend to report higher levels of loneliness in later life. In our preregistered study, we examined whether loneliness mediates the ACEs to mortality risk relation. METHODS: Participants were from the Midlife in the United States Survey (N = 4,963; M [SD] = 46.44 [12.52] years, 53.3% female). Follow-up period spanned 26 years. A comprehensive measure of ACEs was employed consisting of 20 ACEs from 5 categories: physical abuse, emotional

Increases in loneliness among Older Americans Act participants during COVID-19.

Loneliness is increasingly understood as a public health crisis, and older adults are experiencing particularly severe impacts. Social distancing efforts during the COVID-19 pandemic may have increased loneliness among older adults. Guided by the Social Ecological Model, this study uses two cross-sectional waves of the National Survey of Older Americans Act Participants (NSOAAP) from 2019 and 2021 to expand understanding and identify possible points of intervention to increase social support for vulnerable older adults. Results reveal that while home-delivered meal participants have higher lev

Social relations and loneliness among older patients consulting their general practitioner.

INTRODUCTION: Social relations are important for people and affect their quality of life, morbidity and mortality. This holds true especially for older persons. General practitioners (GPs) are in a unique position to address social relations and loneliness; however, no GP population-based studies have assessed older patients' social relations and loneliness. The aim of this study was to analyse the social relations and loneliness of patients aged 65 years and above consulting their GP. METHODS: This survey counted the participation of 12 general practices in the Capital Region of Denmark. Dur

Beyond Connectivity: the Relationship Between Nomophobia, Loneliness, and Psychological Distress in Adolescents.

INTRODUCTION: Nomophobia is an experience when someone is separated from a mobile phone, which is becoming increasingly common among adolescents and may be associated with heightened psychological distress and feelings of loneliness. Despite its growing relevance, research on its effects in school-aged populations remains limited, especially within the Indian context. The present study sought to explore the relationship between nomophobia, loneliness, and psychological distress among adolescents. METHODS: This cross-sectional study was carried out among 358 students aged 14-18 years using pur

Emotional and social loneliness in the longitudinal association between alexithymia and depressive symptoms.

BACKGROUND: Alexithymia has been linked to depressive symptoms, yet the mechanisms underlying this association remain unclear. We examined whether emotional loneliness (perceived lack of close, intimate bonds) and social loneliness (perceived deficits in broader social integration) represent distinct pathways linking alexithymia to depressive symptoms. METHODS: In a longitudinal study of 2628 adults aged 18-40 years, we examined whether emotional and social loneliness mediate the association between alexithymia and depressive symptoms. Participants were assessed over 10 months (T0-T2). A para

The development and preliminary validation of a multidimensional assessment scale for loneliness in nursing homes.

BACKGROUND: Loneliness among nursing home residents is a multidimensional and subjective experience associated with adverse health outcomes. Existing instruments often fail to capture this complexity and are poorly adapted to cognitively impaired populations in institutional care settings. OBJECTIVES: To create a multidimensional, cognitively accessible assessment scale for loneliness in nursing home residents, grounded in residents' experiences and suitable for use in routine care. DESIGN: Sequential multi method study following the initial stages of scale development as outlined by Boateng

The influence of loneliness & social isolation on cardiovascular risk factors: a narrative review.

INTRODUCTION: Despite substantial advances in treatment and preventive medicine, heart disease remains the leading cause of morbidity and mortality worldwide. While traditional risk factors have been identified, emerging research continues to underscore the importance of social interactions. AREAS COVERED: This review examines research on how loneliness and social isolation influence the major risk factors for heart disease. Studies from 2000 up to April 2026 were searched using PubMed, Science Direct, and Web of Science. The included research focused on loneliness and social isolation, along

Loneliness and cognitive function in later life: a population-based counterfactual analysis.

BACKGROUND: Loneliness is increasingly recognized as a major public health challenge. Yet, its impact on cognitive function remains poorly understood. A complex interplay of life-course risk factors makes it challenging to disentangle the effect of loneliness from other factors and to assess underlying mechanisms when using traditional approaches. METHODS: We applied the parametric g-formula with the Health and Retirement Study (1996-2018; n = 34 774; aged 50-80 years) to simulate an intervention estimating the effect of preventing loneliness on cognitive function. We assessed whether this ef

Loneliness and Well-Being: Exploring the Stress-Buffering Role of Neighborhood Cohesion.

Loneliness is a well-established social stressor associated with poorer mental health and lower life satisfaction. However, limited research has examined psychosocial resources that may buffer these associations. This study investigates whether neighborhood cohesion moderates the relationships between loneliness and these outcomes, and whether this moderating role varies by gender over time. Data were drawn from two waves (2017-2019 and 2020-2022) of the United Kingdom Household Longitudinal Study (N = 14,787 individuals; 29,574 person-years)-the only waves capturing data on both neighborhood

The association of loneliness with health and well-being: A second-order meta-analysis.

OBJECTIVE: Lonely people are dissatisfied with the quantity or quality of their social relationships. Prior meta-analyses examined the association of loneliness with specific indices of health or well-being. Here we explored associations of loneliness with several indices of health and well-being, in addition to how such associations vary across different conditions. METHOD: We synthesized data from 49 independent meta-analyses that collectively included over 60 outcomes, 1,900 studies, and 4.8 million participants. We used second-order meta-analysis to assess relations of loneliness with hea

Loneliness is linked to reduced calibration of confidence to uncertainty in social decision-making.

Loneliness is associated with altered social cognition and decision-making, yet the processes through which it shapes behavior in uncertain social contexts remain poorly understood. In particular, little is known about how loneliness relates to metacognitive evaluations of decision reliability. The present study examined whether loneliness is associated with differences in decision confidence and its calibration to uncertainty during social decision-making. Data were collected from two independent general population samples (N = 6,517) using a vignette-based task in which participants decided

Loneliness and desire for thinness explain sex differences in adolescent internalizing problems.

Girls are at higher risk of internalizing problems than boys. This disparity has widened in recent decades, but the underlying mechanisms remain understudied. Here we analysed data from 3,171 adolescents (46.9% girls) within the Tokyo Teen Cohort, assessed at ages 12, 14 and 16 years. At age 16, girls showed higher prevalence of internalizing problems than boys: depressive symptoms (15.9% versus 8.2%) and suicidal ideation (29.8% versus 18.1%). Coproduction with young people suggested loneliness and desire for thinness as candidate pathways. Using the mediational g-formula, we estimated that t

Death and grief literacy in the context of loneliness: Insights from an international symposium.

Death and grief literacy are increasingly recognised as crucial public health resources for responding to serious illness, dying, death, and bereavement. This critical essay summarises key discussions from a three-day international symposium, "Fostering Connection in Existential Phases of Life: How Do We Enhance Death and Grief Literacy?" (July 2025), which brought together experts from palliative care, caring communities, LGBTQ+ advocacy, migration studies, social work, volunteering, and psychosocial support. The symposium did not include members of the general public but focused on academic,
