Preconditioning with sodium deficits to improve orthostatic tolerance in rats.

We hypothesized that prior deficits in total body sodium would improve the subsequent ability of non-hypovolemic rats to maintain arterial pressure when subjected to an orthostatic challenge. This hypothesis was based on similarities in the response of neurohumoral cardiovascular control systems to lower-body negative pressure and negative sodium balance. Sodium deficits were induced in male Sprague-Dawley rats for 7-8 d by feeding sodium restricted diets, or by administering furosemide daily. After this, rats were allowed to regain a positive sodium balance for 1 d by increasing dietary intak

Reference range thyroid-stimulating hormone is associated with physical activity energy expenditure in overweight and obese postmenopausal women: a Montreal-Ottawa New Emerging Team Study.

Clinical and, to a lesser extent, subclinical hypothyroidism is associated with a variety of metabolic abnormalities, including increased body mass index, unfavorable lipoprotein profile, and increased biomarkers for atherosclerosis. Energy expenditure could act as a confounding factor in the association reported between thyroid-stimulating hormone (TSH) levels and cardiometabolic risk factors. The objective of the study was to investigate the relationship between reference range plasma TSH and energy expenditure as well as blood pressure, lipid, and inflammation parameters in women. The association between body composition and orthostatic hypotension in patients with neurodegenerative disorders in parkinsonism-related multidisciplinary clinic.

INTRODUCTION: Orthostatic hypotension (OH) commonly impairs the quality of life and prognosis of patients with neurodegenerative disorders. Since skeletal muscle functions as a peripheral pump for blood pressure stabilization and a reservoir for intracellular water, we investigated its association with body composition in these patients. METHODS: This prospective cross-sectional study included 86 patients with neurodegenerative disorders from Parkinsonism-related Multidisciplinary Clinic in Peking Union Medical College Hospital (PUMCH), including multiple system atrophy (MSA), progressive sup

Effects of short-term hypocaloric diet on sympatho-vagal interaction assessed by spectral analysis of heart rate and blood pressure variability during stress tests in obese hypertensive patients.

We examined the effects of a short-term low-calorie diet on the activity of the autonomic nervous system during stress tests in obese patients with hypertension by analysis of heart rate and blood pressure variability. Eighteen obese inpatients with essential hypertension were given a regular-calorie diet (1,600 kcal, NaCl 7 g) for 4 days, and then a low-calorie diet (1,100 kcal, NaCl 7 g) for 11 days. During both the regular-calorie diet and low-calorie diet, power spectral analysis of heart rate and blood pressure variability at rest and during mental arithmetic test, deep breathing test, is

Individualized Positive End-expiratory Pressure Titration Strategies in Superobese Patients Undergoing Laparoscopic Surgery: Prospective and Nonrandomized Crossover Study.

BACKGROUND: Superobesity and laparoscopic surgery promote negative end-expiratory transpulmonary pressure that causes atelectasis formation and impaired respiratory mechanics. The authors hypothesized that end-expiratory transpulmonary pressure differs between fixed and individualized positive end-expiratory pressure (PEEP) strategies and mediates their effects on respiratory mechanics, end-expiratory lung volume, gas exchange, and hemodynamic parameters in superobese patients. METHODS: In this prospective, nonrandomized crossover study including 40 superobese patients (body mass index 57.3 ±

Stroke: An electromyographic approach to the masseter and temporal muscles, orofacial soft tissue pressure, and occlusal force.

Stroke is a cerebrovascular disease that triggers changes in the central and peripheral nervous systems, and can compromise human body function. This cross-sectional observational study aimed to analyze the electromyographic (EMG) activity of the masseter and temporal muscles, orofacial soft tissue pressure, and strength of occlusal contacts in patients who had suffered a stroke. Twenty-four patients were divided into two groups: stroke (n = 12) and control (n = 12). The EMG of the masseter and temporal muscles was evaluated during mandibular rest, protrusion, right laterality, left laterality

Lower body muscular strength as a predictor of health indicators in youth population: A systematic review and meta-analysis.

Muscular strength in the lower body during childhood and adolescence is crucial for determining various health indicators. While previous reviews have examined the benefits of health-related muscular fitness (MF) in youth, this study aims to analyse a specific indicator of muscular fitness, focusing on current evidence regarding lower-limb muscular strength and power tests as predictors of health parameters in children and adolescents. A systematic search was conducted in Web of Science, MEDLINE (PubMed), and Scopus databases up to December 2023. Observational studies were considered if they q

Sex-Specific Associations Between Cardiac Workload, Peripheral Vascular Calcification, and Bone Mineral Density: The Gambian Bone and Muscle Aging Study.

Noncommunicable diseases (NCD) are rapidly rising in Africa, with multimorbidity increasing the burden on health and social care. Osteoporosis and cardiovascular disease (CVD) share common risk factors; both often remain undiagnosed until a major life-threatening event occurs. We investigated the associations between cardiac workload, peripheral vascular calcification (PVC), and bone parameters in Gambian adults. The Gambian Bone and Muscle Aging Study (GamBAS) recruited 249 women and 239 men aged 40 to 75+ years. Body composition and areal bone mineral density (aBMD) were measured using dual-

Preliminary Evidence of Orthostatic Intolerance and Altered Cerebral Vascular Control Following Sport-Related Concussion.

Concussions have been shown to result in autonomic dysfunction and altered cerebral vascular function. We tested the hypothesis that concussed athletes (CA) would have altered cerebral vascular function during acute decreases and increases in blood pressure compared to healthy controls (HC). Ten CA (age: 20 ± 2 y, 7 females) and 10 HC (age: 21 ± 2 y, 6 females) completed 5 min of lower body negative pressure (LBNP; -40 mmHg) and 5 min of lower body positive pressure (LBPP; 20 mmHg). Protocols were randomized and separated by 10 min. Mean arterial pressure (MAP) and middle cerebral artery blood

Lower serum level of adiponectin is associated with increased risk of endoscopic erosive gastritis.

BACKGROUND: Obesity is recently known as a risk factor for endoscopic gastritis. Adiponectin is an anti-inflammatory cytokine secreted from fat tissue, and its serum concentrations are reduced in obesity. The relation between adiponectin and gastritis remains unclear. AIMS: The aim of this study was to determine whether lower serum adiponectin level is associated with the risk of endoscopic gastritis. METHODS: We analyzed medical records of participants of a routine health check-up examination. Association among endoscopic findings, serum adiponectin level, and other clinical factors includi

Neighborhood, family, and subjective socioeconomic status: How do they relate to adolescent health?

This study investigated the role of neighborhood, family, and individual subjective socioeconomic status (SES) in predicting adolescent physical health and psychological characteristics. Three hundred fifteen adolescents completed assessments of blood pressure, cortisol, and body mass index (BMI). Results revealed that lower neighborhood SES was associated with higher BMI and lower basal cortisol levels and that these effects persisted after controlling for family SES. Both family SES and neighborhood SES predicted negative psychological characteristics and experiences such as hostility and di

Reversal of negative pressure ventilation-induced lower esophageal sphincter dysfunction with metoclopramide.

We have previously demonstrated that lower esophageal sphincter (LES) dysfunction is induced in healthy volunteers placed in negative pressure body ventilators. This is important, because regurgitation of gastric contents and peptic esophagitis are frequent complications of the use of such ventilators. The present study was conducted to determine whether LES dysfunction during the use of these ventilators also occurs in patients with chronic respiratory failure, and whether this dysfunction can be pharmacologically reversed. Seven patients with documented chronic respiratory failure due to COP

Spaceflight Associated Neuro-ocular Syndrome (SANS) and its countermeasures.

Astronauts can develop a distinct collection of neuro-ophthalmic findings during long duration spaceflight, collectively known as Spaceflight Associated Neuro-ocular Syndrome (SANS). These clinical characteristics include optic disc edema, hyperopic refractive shifts, globe flattening, and chorioretinal folds, which may pose a health risk for future space exploration. Obtaining knowledge of SANS and countermeasures for its prevention is crucial for upcoming crewed space missions and warrants a multidisciplinary approach. This review examines the potential causes and countermeasures of SANS, in

Impedance threshold device as a countermeasure for spaceflight associated neuro-ocular syndrome (SANS): Mitigating mechanisms in proposed pathophysiology.

Long-duration spaceflight (LDSF) is associated with unique hazards and linked with numerous human health risks including Spaceflight Associated Neuro-ocular Syndrome (SANS). The proposed mechanisms for SANS include microgravity induced cephalad fluid shift and increased Intracranial Pressure (ICP). SANS is a disorder seen only after LDSF and has no direct terrestrial pathologic counterpart as the zero G environment cannot be completely replicated on Earth. Head-down tilt, bed rest studies however have been used as a terrestrial analog and produce the cephalad fluid shift. Some proposed counter

Necrotizing Fasciitis of the Lower Extremity Treated With Continuous Local Antibiotic Perfusion.

Necrotizing fasciitis (NF) is a severe soft tissue infection that can spread rapidly throughout the body, often resulting in fatal outcomes. Negative pressure wound therapy (NPWT) enhances wound healing by applying local negative pressure, and its effectiveness in managing NF has been documented. However, NPWT creates a semi-closed environment at the wound site, posing a risk of infection. Continuous local antibiotic perfusion (CLAP) is an innovative approach that uses localized infusion to deliver high concentrations of antibiotics continuously to the affected area via NPWT. CLAP includes int

Diverse Treatments for Deep Burn Wounds: A Case Report.

Patients with extensive deep burns usually experience infections and organ dysfunction. Proactive and effective wound repair is key to treatment. If large wounds remain open, systemic infection and multiple organ dysfunction syndrome can occur, threatening the lives of patients. Current wound repair methods include skin grafts, flap repair, negative-pressure wound therapy, and cellular and/or tissue-based products. For deep, complex burn wounds, a single form of treatment is usually ineffective. This article reports a rare case of burn wound repair. The patient was burned by a charcoal flame o
