Intratumoral lung abscess from Eggerthia catenaformis in metastatic pulmonary adenocarcinoma: A case report.

We present a rare case of Eggerthia catenaformis causing an intratumoral lung abscess in metastatic adenocarcinoma. Despite catheter drainage and broad-spectrum antibiotics, the infection persisted, prompting salvage intracavitary antibiotic instillation with poor response. This case highlights the diagnostic advances, therapeutic attempts, and importance of oral evaluation in anaerobic pulmonary infections.

Lung abscess with chronic cough secondary to xanthogranulomatous pyelonephritis: A rare case report.

RATIONALE: Xanthogranulomatous pyelonephritis (XGPN) is a form of chronic pyelonephritis caused by chronic calculus obstruction and bacterial infection, leading to the destruction of the renal parenchyma and calyces. Conservative treatment is usually not sufficient, and surgical intervention is still the main curative approach. XGPN with transdiaphragmatic extension and lung abscess formation is a rare condition. PATIENT CONCERNS: We report a 64-year-old woman who presented with persistent productive cough. DIAGNOSES: Lung abscess secondary to XPGN. Both nephrostomy urine and sputum cultures

Splenic abscess caused by Toxocara spp. in a lung transplant recipient, Marseille, France.

Infections represent one of the leading causes of morbidity and mortality in solid organ transplantation (SOT) recipients. Although Toxocara species are prevalent worldwide, toxocariasis is an important neglected human disease that can manifest as visceral or ocular larva migrans, or covert toxocariasis. Herein, we report and discuss the first documented case of a splenic abscess associated with toxocariasis in a 69-year-old lung transplant recipient, in France. This case emphasizes the need to include prevention of toxocariasis in the management of lung transplant patients.

Spontaneous Subgaleal Abscess Associated with Lung Adenocarcinoma: First Description of This Unusual Association.

BACKGROUND: Primary, spontaneous, or de novo subgaleal abscesses represent extremely rare lesions usually related to patients with risk factors and predisposing conditions for infections. They are associated with high morbidity, and a proper diagnosis can be misleading. To the best of our knowledge, this is the first reported case of a de novo subgaleal abscess not related to previous traumatic head injury and associated with lung adenocarcinoma. CASE DESCRIPTION: A 59-year-old man was admitted to our unit because he presented fever and a palpable subcutaneous right parietal mass. No history

A new strategy in lung/lobe isolation in patients with a lung abscess or a previous lung resection using double lumen tubes combined with bronchial blockers.

The combined use of a double-lumen tube and a bronchial blocker can be very helpful in two different clinical scenarios: (1) in isolating not only the contralateral lung, but also the lobe/s of the same lung in which the infected lobe must be resected, (2) in preventing/treating hypoxemia because of the presence of a contralateral lobectomy. A cardiothoracic anesthesiologist must expertise this technique to avoid complications during surgery.

Red Complex Bacteria as a Hidden Cause of Chronic Lung Abscess: A Case Report.

BACKGROUND Common oral pathogens such as Treponema denticola, Porphyromonas gingivalis, and Tannerella forsythia, which form biofilms in the periodontal pockets, are classified together as Red Complex bacteria in Socransky's subgingival cluster model and are key pathogenic bacteria in periodontitis. Oral pathogens play a critical role in pulmonary infections, particularly in the pathogenesis of lung abscesses. Lung abscesses caused by Red Complex bacteria have rarely been described; to our knowledge, few cases have been reported to date. CASE REPORT We present the first documented case of chro

[Report of a Case of Treatment for Unresectable Esophageal Cancer with Esophageal Perforation and Lung Abscess].

A 60-year-old male complaining of fever and dyspnea came to the hospital. The CT scan suggested esophageal perforation, pyothorax, and pneumothorax due to advanced esophageal cancer. When he was transferred to our hospital, he caused a state of shock, and laboratory tests showed both severe renal dysfunction and inflammation. Additional CT scan showed numerous enlarged lymph nodes and mesenteric nodules. We decided to perform palliative surgery including right lower lobectomy, esophagectomy(R2 resection), esophagostomy, gastrostomy, and tube enterostomy. Because postoperative air leakage persi

Successful treatment of Rhodococcus lung abscess and empyema thoracis in a heart transplant recipient.

Rhodococcosis is an uncommon cause of pulmonary infection in thoracic organ transplant recipients. We describe a heart transplant recipient diagnosed with Rhodococcus equi left upper lung abscess with empyema thoracis complicated by bacteremia. The patient was successfully treated with appropriate antibiotics, adequate surgical resection, and optimization of immunosuppressants.

The Hurricane Lung: A Case of Hydrocarbon Pneumonitis With Abscess Formation Following Fuel Siphoning.

Fuel siphoning is a widespread practice worldwide, but infrequently observed in the United States. Some reports suggest greater incidence of fuel siphoning during the hurricane season. Fuel siphoning is associated with a high risk of hydrocarbon toxicity, often leading to the development of hydrocarbon pneumonitis. This form of exogenous lipoid pneumonia can present acutely with chest pain and dyspnea. While most cases of hydrocarbon pneumonitis resolve spontaneously with supportive care, rarely patients develop life-threatening complications. We present the case of a 56-year-old man who devel

A rare case of community acquired serratia lung abscess in a patient with cardiac bronchus.

The incidence of lung abscess caused by Serratia marcescens is extremely low and is only reported in the immunocompromised population. We present a previously healthy woman with Serratia lung abscess in close proximity with an accessory cardiac bronchus. The patient was treated with appropriate antibiotics which led to complete resolution of the lesion. Our case highlights that individuals without medical co-morbidities may develop atypical lung infections like Serratia when associated with anatomic anomalies.

Lung abscess due to Streptococcus pneumoniae: a case series and brief review of the literature.

Anaerobes used to be the most common cause of community-acquired lung abscess, and Streptococcus species used to be the second most common cause. In recent years, this has been changing. Klebsiella pneumoniae is now an increasing cause of community- acquired lung abscess, but Streptococcus species continue to be major pathogens. Necrotizing pneumonia has generally been regarded as a rare complication of pneumococcal infection in adults. Type 3 Streptococcus pneumoniae was the single most common type implicated in necrosis; however, many other serotypes were implicated. This entity predominatel

Streptococcal lung abscesses from a dental focus following tocilizumab: a case report.

UNLABELLED: Concurrent presentation of pulmonary nocardiosis and granulomatosis with polyangiitis (GPA) is exceptionally rare and diagnostically challenging, given the overlapping clinical and radiological features. We report a 54-year-old female with fever, cough, weight loss, and arthralgia. Chest imaging showed multiple pulmonary nodules; serology revealed positive anti-neutrophil cytoplasmic antibodies -proteinase 3, and lung biopsy demonstrated necrotizing granulomatous inflammation with Nocardia species. This led to a dual diagnosis of pulmonary nocardiosis and limited form GPA. The pati

Aspiration pneumonia and primary lung abscess: diagnosis and therapy of an aerobic or an anaerobic infection?

Pneumonia and primary lung abscesses may result from aspiration of infectious material from the oropharyngeal cavity and the upper respiratory tract. Most subjects suffer from an impaired mechanical or immunologic defense, for example alcoholism or dysphagia following stroke. The early course of the disease is uncharacteristic. Necrotizing pneumonia, pulmonary abscesses and the characteristic, foul-smelling, putrid discharge only occur 8-14 days after the initial aspiration event. Although common respiratory pathogens are frequently isolated from the lower airways of these patients, anaerobic

Chronic eosinophilic pneumonia with small abscesses in the tracheo-bronchial mucosa and lung parenchyma.

Abscess formation is uncommon in eosinophilic lung disease. In this paper we present a case of chronic eosinophilic pneumonia in which bronchofiberoscopy revealed scattered small abscesses in the large airways. Pathological examination revealed the presence of inflammatory cells with eosinophilic infiltration in both the bronchial mucosa and lung parenchyma.

Trans-thoracic Extension of a Lung Abscess With a Pleurocutaneous Fistula: A Report of a Rare Case.

Lung abscesses are localized collections of pus within the pulmonary parenchyma, usually arising from necrotizing infection and commonly occurring in patients with risk factors such as immunosuppression or aspiration. Typical complications include pleural effusion, empyema and bronchopleural fistula. Direct invasion of the chest wall by a lung abscess is an exceptionally rare complication, with most reported cases related to tuberculous empyema (empyema necessitans) rather than being related to the primary pulmonary infection. The authors report a case of a 42-year-old male patient with chroni
