Multifaceted approach to the impact of drying techniques on Lycium barbarum polysaccharide yield, quality, and bioactive retention: insights from HPLC monosaccharide quantification.

Lycium barbarum (goji berry, LB) is a nutrient-dense fruit that requires drying for preservation, but this process can degrade its bioactive compounds. This study compares the effects of hot-air drying (HAD), infrared drying (IRD), and pulsed vacuum drying (PVD) on drying kinetics, microstructure, and polysaccharide yield, with HPLC used for monosaccharide quantification and FT-IR for structural analysis. PVD significantly reduced drying time to 11 h, representing a 50.0% reduction compared to HAD (22 h), a 47.6% reduction compared to IRD (21 h), and a 42.1% reduction compared to HAD+ (19 h),

Lycium barbarum polysaccharides alleviate PVC microplastic-induced ferroptosis and fibrosis in duck kidneys by attenuating NCOA4-mediated ferritinophagy: an in vivo study.

Microplastics (MPs) contamination is widespread and continues to increase. Compared to terrestrial organisms, mallards as waterfowl are more susceptible to MPs exposure. Lycium barbarum polysaccharides (LBP) are bioactive compounds extracted from goji berries; however, the mechanism by which LBP alleviates polyvinyl chloride microplastics (PVC-MPs)-induced renal damage in ducks remains unknown. In this study, network pharmacology was utilized to identify target proteins of LBP against PVC-MPs-induced renal injury. Analyses of protein-protein interaction (PPI) networks, drug-disease-target netw

Lycium barbarum polysaccharide alleviates ferroptosis in Sertoli cells through NRF2/SLC7A11/GPX4 pathway and ameliorates DEHP-induced male reproductive damage in mice.

Di-(2-ethylhexyl)phthalate (DEHP) is a common plasticizer that has been shown to significantly negatively affect male reproductive health. On the other hand, Lycium barbarum polysaccharide (LBP) has been shown to improve reproductive function. Therefore, we hypothesized that LBP may ameliorate DEHP-induced male reproductive damage. Herein, we found that LBP could alleviate DEHP-induced testicular damage and sperm abnormalities. Furthermore, histomorphological analysis of mice testis revealed that LBP primarily ameliorated the DEHP-induced male reproductive damage by targeting Sertoli cells. Mo

Effects of dietary supplementation of Lycium barbarum polysaccharides on growth performance, immune status, antioxidant capacity and selected microbial populations of weaned piglets.

Lycium barbarum polysaccharides (LBPs) are a complex mixture of highly branched and partially characterised polysaccharides and proteoglycans extracted from the goji berry. This mixture has great potential as a novel feed supplement for pigs. Two trials were conducted to evaluate the effects of supplementation with LBPs on the growth performance, immune status, antioxidant capacity and selected intestinal microbial populations in weaned piglets. In trial 1, a total of 400 weaned piglets [(Yorkshire × Landrace) × Duroc] with an average body weight (BW) of 6.34 ± 0.16 kg (21 days of age) were di

Nitric Oxide Inhibition and Procollagen Type I Peptide Synthesis Activities of a Phenolic Amide Identified from the Stem of Lycium chinense Miller.

The bioactivities of boxthron fruits, a source of oriental medicine, are well known, whereas phytochemical studies of the boxthorn stem are rare. In this study, the stem extract of boxthorn (Lycium chinense Miller) and its subfractions were evaluated for their effects on nitric oxide (NO) inhibition and procollagen type I peptide (PIP) synthesis. A phenolic amide isolated from the stem extract was also assayed for these effects. The compound, N-trans-feruloyltyramine, was identified by 1H, 13C, and 2D-nuclear magnetic resonance analyses. In NO inhibition, the chloroform fraction (CF) exhibited

Lycium Barbarum Polysaccharide Attenuates Staphylococcus aureus-Induced Mastitis via the Gut Microbiota-Derived Indole-3-Propionic Acid/AhR-IL-22-STAT3 Axis.

Mastitis caused by Staphylococcus aureus (S. aureus) is marked by inflammation and disruption of the blood-milk barrier (BMB), posing health risks to humans and animals. We investigated the therapeutic effects of Lycium barbarum polysaccharide (LBP) in lactating mice with S. aureus-induced mastitis. Oral LBP reduced bacterial colonization, inflammatory cytokines, oxidative stress, and BMB damage. 16S rRNA sequencing and fecal microbiota transplantation (FMT) confirmed that protective effects depended on gut microbiota modulation. Metabolomic analysis revealed that LBP promoted microbial trypto

Research on the Highly Efficient and Low-Dose Improvement of Alcohol-Induced Liver Injury by High-Selenium-Content Modified Lycium barbarum Polysaccharides.

There are currently no FDA-approved drugs for the treatment of alcohol-related liver diseases (ALD) due to their lack of effectiveness. Selenium-modified Lycium barbarum polysaccharides (SeLBP), as a promising agent for ALD, has not been studied before. In this study, with LBP and sodium selenite (Na2SeO3) as controls, and silymarin capsules, a clinical therapeutic agent, as a positive control, the therapeutic effects and mechanisms of SeLBP on ALD were systematically evaluated in an acute ALD mouse model. The results demonstrated that SeLBP, at the same dose, showed superior therapeutic effec

Lycium barbarum Polysaccharide Improves Iron Homeostasis in Spermatocytes and Sertoli Cells via NRF2 to Alleviate DEHP-Induced Male Reproductive Toxicity in Mice.

Male infertility, as a globally significant reproductive health issue, remains idiopathic in over 40% of cases. Reproductive disorders in males induced by environmental pollutants, such as di(2-ethylhexyl) phthalate (DEHP), have garnered considerable attention in recent years. DEHP induces testicular oxidative stress and ferroptosis via its active metabolite MEHP, thereby leading to spermatogenic dysfunction. Lycium barbarum polysaccharide (LBP), a traditional food and medicine homologous substance, exhibits potential antioxidant and reproductive protective properties. However, the underlying

Lycium barbarum polysaccharide combined with aerobic exercise ameliorated nonalcoholic fatty liver disease through restoring gut microbiota, intestinal barrier and inhibiting hepatic inflammation.

Gut microbiota and intestinal permeability have been demonstrated to be the key players in the gut-liver cross talk in nonalcoholic fatty liver disease (NAFLD). Lycium barbarum polysaccharides (LBPs), which seem to be a potential prebiotic, and aerobic exercise (AE) have shown protective effects on NAFLD. However, their combined effects on intestinal microecology remain unclear. This study evaluated the effects of LBP, AE, and its combination (LBP + AE) on gut microbiota composition, intestinal barrier, and hepatic inflammation in NAFLD. LBP + AE showed high abundance and diversity of gut micr

Lycium barbarum (Wolfberry) Increases Retinal Ganglion Cell Survival and Affects both Microglia/Macrophage Polarization and Autophagy after Rat Partial Optic Nerve Transection.

The rat partial optic nerve transection (PONT) model has been used for studying secondary degeneration of retinal ganglion cells (RGCs) in recent years. In this study, we carried out PONT of the temporal side of rat optic nerves, whereas PONT was carried out of the superior side in the previous publication. We found that this surgery is better and easier than the previous method and can produce a repeatable and reliable model. We detected significant changes in the polarization of microglia/macrophages and the level of autophagy in optic nerves after PONT. We also used this model to detect the

Lycium barbarum polysaccharides improve hepatic injury through NFkappa-B and NLRP3/6 pathways in a methionine choline deficient diet steatohepatitis mouse model.

Lycium barbarum polysaccharides (LBP) are major bioactive constituents of wolfberry which possess several pharmacological effects such as antioxidant and immunomodulatory activities. We aimed to evaluate how LBP attenuated the hepatic injury in a non-alcoholic steatohepatitis (NASH) methionine-choline deficient (MCD) mouse model. NASH was induced in C57BL/6N mice by feeding with MCD diet for 6 weeks. During the experiments, 1 mg/kg LBP was intragastrically fed on a daily basis with or without MCD diet lasting from the 4th to 6th week. Control and vehicle-control (LBP + PBS) were fed with a reg
