Endocrine disruption in aquatic pulmonate molluscs: few evidences, many challenges.

As compared to other groups of aquatic gastropods, documented examples of endocrine disruption in pulmonates are rather limited. This is quite surprising because the endocrine control of physiological functions has been extensively studied in these animals. In the model-species Lymnaea stagnalis, the neurohormonal regulation of reproduction has been thoroughly investigated, and the primary structure of several peptides and receptors involved in endocrine processes has been established. However, the use of this knowledge has been fairly limited in the context of ecotoxicology, to investigate th

A study on cercarial dermatitis in Khuzestan province, south western Iran.

BACKGROUND: Cercarial dermatitis' or swimmer's itch' is an itchy inflammatory response to the penetration of the skin by non-human schistosome parasites. In the hot season, (May to September) in Khuzestan province in the south west of Iran, swimming in canals and agriculture activities in swampy areas are common. This survey was made on people from villages north of Ahwaz city in south west Iran, to estimate cercarial dermatitis in this region. METHODS: 2000 people were observed for clinical signs of cercarial dermatitis. Also 2000 Lymnaea gedrosiana snails were collected from agriculture can

Early migration of radiolabeled larvae of Fasciola hepatica in the mouse.

Metacercariae of Fasciola hepatica were labeled with 75Se by exposure of infected Lymnaea columella to 75Se-M, 20 muCi/snail, in 5 ml of water. Seventy-two mice were inoculated with 50 75Se-labeled metacercariae. At intervals after infection, the distribution of metacercariae in gut, body cavities and liver was studied by compressed organ autoradiography, and a variant of this technique adapted to gut content and body cavity washes. Ag degree focus counts from autoradiograms expressed as percentage of actual exposure level were subjected to probit analysis. Estimates of the average departure t

Epidemiology of Fasciola hepatica infection in the Paraíba River Valley, São Paulo, Brasil.

The study revealed that although Lymnaea columella and Stenophysa marmorata were found in the same habitat, only L. columella harbored intramolluscan stages of F. hepatica. The population density of L. columella cyclically decreased between September and February, and increased from March to September. The drought that occurred between June and November 1981 dramatically reduced the number of snails collected. Larger snails were collected in March-July and November-December, while the smaller snails were collected in January-February and August-October, suggesting that there may be two generat

[Fascioliasis prevention in cloven-hoofed wild animals and animal reserves].

Pilot trials are described in which BHS, a Czechoslovak fasciolicide, was employed for mass treatment of fasciolosis in cloven-hoofed animals in wild-animals' reserves at the rate of 30 mg body weight using BHS-medicated feed. The treatment was combined with control measures against the intermediate host snail, Lymnaea truncatula, in primary biotopes using Frescon, a molluscicide of English origin, and CF-4, a molluscicide of Czechoslovak origin, at concentration of 1 and 0.5 per cent, respectively. Where the application of molluscicides was impracticable the intermediate host snails were cont

The effect of the molluscicide N-tritylmorpholine on transmission of Fasciola hepatica.

Field trials were carried out in north Devon to investigate the relationship between molluscicide treatment of pastures and control of liver fluke infection in sheep. Seven tracer lambs per plot were used to estimate the infectivity of 17 pairs of 0.20 hectare plots. One plot in each pair was treated with the molluscicide Frescon (N-tritylmorpholine). There was a highly significant difference (P less than 0.001) between the numbers of Fasciola hepatica recovered from lambs grazed on treated and untreated plots in the period after molluscicide treatment. The overall degree of snail control achi

Fascioliasis control: in vivo and in vitro phytotherapy of vector snail to kill fasciola larva.

Snail is one of the important components of an aquatic ecosystem, it acts as intermediate host of Fasciola species. Control of snail population below a certain threshold level is one of the important methods in the campaign to reduce the incidence of fascioliasis. Life cycle of the parasite can be interrupted by killing the snail or Fasciola larva redia and cercaria in the snail body. In vivo and in vitro toxicity of the plant products and their active component such as citral, ferulic acid, umbelliferone, azadirachtin, and allicin against larva of Fasciola in infected snail Lymnaea acuminata

The definitive and intermediate hosts of Fasciola hepatica in the natural watercress beds in central France.

Field investigations were carried out over a two-year period in 52 natural watercress beds located in the Limousin region of central France to list the mammal and bird species that frequented these sites. This enabled detection of the definitive hosts of Fasciola hepatica and determination of the prevalence of natural infection in snails. A total of 13 mammal and five bird species were listed in these watercress beds. Adult flukes were found in Lepus capensis (39.2%), Oryctolagus cuniculus (42.0%), and Sylvilagus floridanus (25.0%). No infection with F. hepatica was noted in the five species o

Epidemiological studies of Fasciola gigantica infections in cattle in the highveld and lowveld communal grazing areas of Zimbabwe.

During the period between January 1999 and December 2000, the distribution and seasonal patterns of Fasciola gigantica infections in cattle in the highveld and lowveld communal grazing areas of Zimbabwe were determined through monthly coprological examination. Cattle faecal samples were collected from 12 and nine dipping sites in the highveld and lowveld communal grazing areas respectively. Patterns of distribution and seasonal fluctuations of the intermediate host-snail populations and the climatic factors influencing the distribution were also determined by sampling at monthly intervals for

[Cercarial dermatitis in Europe: a new public health problem?].

Cercarial dermatitis is a parasitic impasse that has worldwide distribution. The condition manifests itself as a highly pruriginous skin rash and is due to penetration of the dermis by larval stages (furcocercariae) of avian trematodes. Many species may be responsible for this disease. In Europe the genus Trichobilharzia is widely represented, in particular by the species T. ocellata; the definitive host is the duck (Anas platyrhinchos); the intermediate hosts are snails of the genus Lymnea (L. ovata or L. stagnalis). In France, cases of cercarial dermatitis were reported in June and July 1994

Functional characterization and related evolutionary implications of invertebrate gonadotropin-releasing hormone/corazonin in a well-established model species.

In vertebrates, gonadotropin-releasing hormone (GnRH) peptide is the central mediator of reproduction. Homologous peptides have previously also been identified in molluscan species. However, emerging evidence suggests that these molecules might serve diverse regulatory functions and proposes to consider them as corazonin (CRZ). We previously isolated the full-length cDNA of the invGnRH/CRZ peptide (termed ly-GnRH/CRZ) in the well-established invertebrate model species, the great pond snail Lymnaea stagnalis; however, its predicted functions remain to be verified. In this study, we first confir

Paramphistomum daubneyi: characteristics of infection in three lymnaeid species.

Experimental infections of two South American lymnaeids (Lymnaea neotropica and L. viatrix var. ventricosa) with Paramphistomum daubneyi were carried out to determine if these snail species could sustain larval development of this digenean and, if so, to specify their potential for cercarial production. A French population of Galba truncatula infected and raised according to the same protocol served as controls. In both experiments, prevalence of P. daubneyi infections in snails did not significantly differ from each other. In snail groups evaluated for cercarial shedding (first experiment), a

Prevalence and intensity of infections in the lymnaeid snail Omphiscola glabra experimentally infected with Fasciola hepatica, Fascioloides magna and Paramphistomum daubneyi.

Single and double infections of juvenile Omphiscola glabra (Gastropoda: Lymnaeidae) with Paramphistomum daubneyi and/or Fasciola hepatica were carried out to determine the redial burden and cercarial production in snails dissected at day 60 or at day 75 post-exposure (p.e.) in the laboratory at 20 degrees C. The results were compared with those obtained with single-miracidium infections by Fascioloides magna. Compared to F. hepatica, low values were noted at day 75 p.e. for the prevalence of snail infections with P. daubneyi (4.6-8.3% instead of 23.6-25.9%), the total number of free rediae (10

Insights into early molluscan neuronal development through studies of transmitter phenotypes in embryonic pond snails.

Pond snails have long been the subject of intense scrutiny by researchers interested in general principles of development and also cellular and molecular neurobiology. Recent work has exploited both these fields of study by examining the ontogeny of the nervous system in these animals. Much of this work has focussed upon the development of specific transmitter phenotypes to provide vignettes of neuronal subpopulations that can be traced from early embryonic life through to adulthood. While such studies have generally confirmed previous explanations of gangliogenesis in gastropods, they have al

Decoy effect and host infection by miracidia within snail communities.

The effect of experimental non-host snail (NHS) communities on the infection of Lymnaea truncatula with Paramphistomum daubneyi and Fasciola hepatica miracidia was studied. The results obtained indicated that NHS had variable effects on basic population parameters of host infection. Specifically, NHS were able to produce aggregation of sporocyst number/snail in the experimental host populations. Proposed hypotheses for decoy effect mechanisms failed to explain completely the experimental results. A new mechanism is suggested, based on a distance response of miracidia to snail chemo-attractants
