New data have recently been reported in ocular adnexal lymphomas (OALs), particularly of mucosa-associated lymphoid tissue (MALT)-type, regarding their biological characteristics and therapeutic management. A possible association between OAL and Chlamydia psittaci infection has suggested new mechanisms of lymphomagenesis and opened the way for specific targeted treatment. Similarly, the place of rituximab monoclonal antibody therapy and more conventional chemotherapy, as well as a 'wait-and-see' policy in few clearly defined situations, must be defined in relation to the standard treatment opt

Mucosa-associated lymphoid tissue (MALT) lymphoma is a low-grade tumor closely associated with chronic inflammation such as that of Helicobacter pylori gastritis, Sjogren's syndrome, and Hashimoto's thyroiditis. Tumor regression by H. pylori eradication alone is well known in gastric MALT lymphoma, but some tumors occur in the absence of pre-existing chronic inflammation. The understanding of MALT lymphoma biology has significantly improved, and recurrent cytogenetic alterations have been detected. These include the trisomies 3 and 18, and the translocations t(11;18)(q21;q21), t(1;14)(p22;q32)

OBJECTIVES: Extranodal marginal B-cell lymphoma of mucosa-associated lymphoid tissue (MALT) accounts for about 7% to 8% of all B-cell lymphomas and 50% of all gastric lymphomas. Long-term localized growth is typical of MALT lymphoma. Multifocal manifestations are possible in advanced stages. MALT lymphoma of the larynx is a very rare disease; only 15 cases have been reported in the literature.
METHODS: We report a case of multifocal MALT lymphoma affecting the larynx associated with extraesophageal reflux, chronic laryngitis, and gastric Helicobacter pylori infection. The staging revealed a r

To evaluate the sensitivity of 18-fluoro-2-deoxyglucose (18F-FDG) positron emission tomography (PET) in patients with mucosa-associated lymphoid tissue (MALT) lymphoma. A total of 32 patients with a histological diagnosis of extra-nodal MALT lymphoma were referred to the PET Centers in the last 2 years (2003 - 2004) and scanned with 18F-FDG-PET following standard procedures. Overall, the results of 50 18F-FDG-PET scans performed in either active disease state or in complete remission were reviewed. Sites of primary disease included stomach, lung, parotid, skin, orbit, mandible, esophagus and u

The mucosa-associated lymphoid tissue (MALT) initiates immune responses to specific antigens encountered along all mucosal surfaces. MALT inductive sites are secondary immune tissues where antigen sampling occurs and immune responses are initiated. Effector sites, present as diffuse lymphoid tissue along all mucosal surfaces are the sites of IgA transport across the mucosal epithelium. Though there are many differences between inductive sites in various organs, they all contain the same basic compartments-follicles, interfollicular regions, subepithelial dome regions, and follicle-associated e

Common variable immunodeficiency (CVID) is the most common symptomatic primary immunodeficiency characterized by reduced levels of all major immunoglobuline classes and recurrent c infections. The risk of non-Hodgkin's lymphoma (NHL) among patients with CVID was found to be increased in different studies. Mucosa-associated lymphoid tissue (MALT) lymphomas are a recently recognized sub-set of low-grade B-cell NHL composed of marginal zone-related cells. MALT lymphomas appear in the lymphoid tissues as a result of chronic inflammatory or autoimmune stimulation. This study briefly reviews previou

In the thymus, the relationship between lymphofollicular hyperplasia and mucosa-associated lymphoid tissue (MALT)-type lymphoma is uncertain. We analyzed 14 cases with a diagnosis of thymic follicular hyperplasia in patients with connective tissue disease (n = 2), myasthenia gravis (n = 11), or both (n = 1). In 11 cases, well-defined reactive lymphoid follicles were surrounded by a continuous layer of medullary epithelial cells. A polyclonal rearrangement of the immunoglobulin heavy chain gene (IgH) was observed. In 3 cases, ill-defined lymphoid follicles with sheets of centrocytic-like B cell

Common variable immunodeficiency (CVID) is a primary immunodeficiency disease characterized by low serum immunoglobulins IgG, IgA, and usually IgM. The central immune deficiency is impaired secretion of immunoglobulins and lack of antibody production; however, T cell dysfunction and a variety of inflammatory complications suggest global immune dysregulation. A number of reports have documented the association of primary immunodeficiency diseases with the development of non-Hodgkin's lymphoma (NHL). In CVID, the risk has been estimated to lie between 1.4% and 7%. As for NHL arising in other imm

Mucosa-associated lymphoid tissue (MALT) tumors of the parotid gland are extranodal non-Hodgkin lymphomas. Stage I and II MALT tumors are usually treated with surgery or radiotherapy. Bilateral MALT-derived non-Hodgkin lymphoma of the parotid glands is rare, and optimal treatment is debatable. Two patients presented at the otorhinolaryngology department of the Friedrich-Alexander-University of Erlangen-Nuremberg, Erlangen, Germany. The treatment strategy that was used in case 1 was also successfully used in case 2. A precise diagnosis could not be made by either fine-needle biopsy or intraoper

Infection with Helicobacter pylori triggers the acquisition of gastric mucosa-associated lymphoid tissue (MALT) and provides the background for MALT-type lymphoma development. This concept has been supported by a high association of H. pylori infection and MALT-type lymphoma and by the regression of most lymphomas after eradication therapy. In almost all patients with MALT-type lymphoma, serum antibodies to H. pylori were detectable. However, H. pylori was found only in 78% of the patients on histological examination. In addition to other effects, changes in the gastric micro-milieu caused by

BACKGROUND: It is still unclear which patients with gastric mucosa-associated lymphoid tissue (MALT) lymphoma will benefit from the eradication of Helicobacter pylori.
METHODS: The authors studied a total of 34 patients. Twenty-three patients had primary gastric lymphoma and underwent gastric resection as initial treatment. Eleven patients with gastric MALT lymphoma who received antibiotics against H. pylori as initial treatment were also included. In all 34 patients, the presence of H. pylori, endoscopic findings, and pathologic features were evaluated. Immunohistochemical expression of Bcl-

Mucosa-associated lymphoid tissue (MALT) lymphomas are low-grade B-cell lymphomas that occur in a variety of extranodal sites but rarely as a primary hepatic lymphoma. We describe the histological findings, immunophenotype, and immunohistochemistry of one such lymphoma found incidentally in a 69-year-old woman. The lymphoid infiltrate invaded the liver in a serpiginous configuration with entrapment of nodules of normal liver. Reactive follicles were surrounded by intermediate-sized lymphoid cells with slightly irregular nuclei and pale cytoplasm. Only a few scattered lymphoepithelial lesions w

The recently appreciated concept of Mucosa-Associated Lymphoid Tissue (MALT) and the characteristics of the lymphomas arising therein are discussed with reference to the clinical, histological and immunohistochemical features of the first four cases of gastric MALT lymphomas diagnosed at the University Hospital of the West Indies. These tumours are low-grade B-cell lymphomas, which may undergo high-grade transformation. They are aetiologically associated with Helicobacter pylori (H pylori) infection in the stomach and may be cured in the early stages with antibiotics. Our cases were diagnosed

Mucosa-associated lymphoid tissue lymphoma can occur in various localizations. We describe the case of a patient presenting bilateral MALT lymphoma involving a lacrimal gland and a lacrimal duct. Biopsy specimens are required for histologic diagnosis. Such low-grade lymphomas are generally treated medically with radiotherapy or chemotherapy. Prognosis is generally favorable. A complete work-up is required to determine extension. These patients should be followed regularly.

Although the majority of primary gastric lymphomas are of high-grade non-Hodgkin's type, a significant number are low-grade B cell lymphomas. The recognition that the majority of the latter have characteristic clinicopathological features that are different from those of their nodal counterparts has led to the suggestion that these lymphomas arise specifically from within organized extranodal lymphoid tissue; this tissue resembles that seen constitutively in the intestine (mostly located in the terminal ileum as Peyer's patches) and is termed mucosa-associated lymphoid tissue (MALT). The parad

Malignant B-cell lymphoma of mucosa-associated lymphoid tissue (MALT) type is now considered to be a tumor of marginal zone cells of native or, more frequently, acquired MALT. The relationship of MALT lymphoma to the normal counterpart population is acknowledged by the revised European-American classification of lymphoid neoplasms (R.E.A.L.). It fits into the extranodal subtype of marginal zone lymphoma listed as a distinct entity in this recent classification scheme. A typical feature of this lymphoma type is a close lymphocyte-epithelium interaction as reflected by lymphoepithelial lesions.

The head kidney and spleen are major sites of haemopoiesis in fish; a secondary center is found in loose connective tissue of the intestine. In this study we determined the nature of gut-associated haemopoietic tissue in the goldfish, Carassius auratus, using light and electron microscopy. This tissue is a loose stroma of reticular cells and fibers vascularized by capillaries, venules, and arterioles. The cellular population includes lymphoblasts, small and medium-sized lymphocytes, plasmocytes, macrophages, and various granulocytes. The most abundant granulocyte is the mast cell, whose large

The teleost gill forms an extensive, semipermeable barrier that must tolerate intimate contact with the surrounding environment and be able to protect the body from external pathogens. The recent discovery of the interbranchial lymphoid tissue (ILT) has initiated an anatomical and functional investigation of the lymphoid tissue of the salmonid gill. In this article, sectioning of gill arches in all three primary planes revealed an elongation of the ILT outward along the trailing edge of the primary filament to the very distal end, a finding not previously described. This newly found lymphoid t
