Maternal exposure to extremely low frequency magnetic fields: Association with time to pregnancy and foetal growth.

BACKGROUND: Data on reproductive and developmental effects of extremely low frequency magnetic fields (ELF MFs) are inconclusive. This study tested the hypothesis that maternal exposure to ELF MFs is associated with increased time to pregnancy (TTP), reduced birthweight or small for gestational age (SGA). METHODS: The study cohort consisted of 373 mothers who gave birth between 1990 and 1994 in Kuopio University Hospital, Finland. To increase prevalence of high ELF MF exposure, women living in buildings near known ELF MF sources were included. Maternal exposure to ELF MF before and during pre

Genotoxicity Induced by Foetal and Infant Exposure to Magnetic Fields and Modulation of Ionising Radiation Effects.

BACKGROUND: Few studies have investigated the toxicity and genotoxicity of extremely low frequency magnetic fields (ELF-MF) during prenatal and neonatal development. These phases of life are characterized by cell proliferation and differentiation, which might make them sensitive to environmental stressors. Although in vitro evidences suggest that ELF-MF may modify the effects of ionizing radiation, no research has been conducted so far in vivo on the genotoxic effects of ELF-MF combined with X-rays. AIM AND METHODS: Aim of this study was to investigate in somatic and germ cells the effects of

Alzheimer's disease: improvement of visual memory and visuoconstructive performance by treatment with picotesla range magnetic fields.

Impairments in visual memory and visuoconstructive functions commonly occur in patients with Alzheimer's disease (AD). Recently, I reported that external application of electromagnetic fields (EMF) of extremely low intensity (in the picotesla range) and of low frequency (in the range of 5Hz-8Hz) improved visual memory and visuoperceptive functions in patients with Parkinson's disease. Since a subgroup of Parkinsonian patients, specifically those with dementia, have coexisting pathological and clinical features of AD, I investigated in two AD patients the effects of these extremely weak EMF on

Rapid normalization of visual evoked potentials by picoTesla range magnetic fields in chronic progressive multiple sclerosis.

This communication concerns a 55 year old woman with a 5 year history of chronic progressive multiple sclerosis (MS) in whom a single external application of extremely low magnetic fields (MF) (7.5 picoTesla; 5 Hz frequency) of 20 minutes duration resulted in a rapid improvement in symptoms including vision, cerebellar symptomatology (ataxia and dysarthria), bladder functions, mood, sleep, cognitive functions and fatigue. Improvement in the patient's symptoms was associated with normalization of the pretreatment abnormal visual evoked potential (VEP) latencies within 24 hours after magnetic tr

Exposure to magnetic fields among electrical workers in relation to leukemia risk in Los Angeles County.

To address the hypotheses that electrical workers are exposed to higher magnetic fields and are at higher risk of leukemia than nonelectrical workers, we performed a registry-based case-control study among men aged 20-64 years with known occupation who were diagnosed with cancer in Los Angeles County between 1972 and 1990. Controls were men with cancers other than those of the central nervous system or leukemia. Magnetic field measurements on workers in each electrical occupation and in a random sample of occupations presumed to be nonelectrical were used to estimate magnetic field exposures f

Comparative Evaluation of Magnetic Field Strength and Fat Suppression for Magnetic Resonance Sialography in Healthy Dogs.

This prospective study aimed to evaluate the feasibility of magnetic resonance (MR) sialography in dogs, compare image quality between 1.5 and 3 T scanners, and assess the effect of fat suppression (FS). Five healthy beagle dogs underwent MR imaging (MRI) at both field strengths using three-dimensional (3D) fast spin-echo (FSE) and 3D FSE-FS sequences. Qualitative (four-point scoring of visibility and delineation) and quantitative (signal-to-noise ratio [SNR] and contrast-to-noise ratio [CNR]) assessments were performed for each salivary duct. Interobserver agreement was near-perfect (κ = 0.86

Rotating magnetic field induced oscillation of magnetic particles for in vivo mechanical destruction of malignant glioma.

Magnetic particles that can be precisely controlled under a magnetic field and transduce energy from the applied field open the way for innovative cancer treatment. Although these particles represent an area of active development for drug delivery and magnetic hyperthermia, the in vivo anti-tumor effect under a low-frequency magnetic field using magnetic particles has not yet been demonstrated. To-date, induced cancer cell death via the oscillation of nanoparticles under a low-frequency magnetic field has only been observed in vitro. In this report, we demonstrate the successful use of spin-vo

Magnetic Field Tunable Raman Scattering and Zone-Folding Phonons in Two-Dimensional Magnet CrSBr.

The discovery of two-dimensional (2D) magnets has attracted significant attention in both fundamental research in low-dimensional physics and potential applications in spintronics. CrSBr, an A-type antiferromagnetic (AFM) van der Waals material with intralayer ferromagnetic (FM) order along the b axis, stands out as one of the most extensively studied 2D magnetic materials due to the strong coupling between its electronic structure and magnetic properties. Here, we demonstrate a deep connection between the magnetic order and Raman scattering of phonons in CrSBr. By applying a magnetic field al

Engineering Layered Magnetic Hydrogels for Cell Placement via Shear and Magnetic Field-Induced Assembly.

The design of hydrogel-based artificial tissues capable of reversible, programmed, and complex motions requires both stimuli-responsiveness and structural anisotropy. In this work, non-unidirectional anisotropies are generated in biocompatible hydrogels by structuring magnetic particle suspensions into lamellar architectures through two distinct routes: the application of an unsteady magnetic field to a quiescent sample, and the superposition of a steady magnetic field with shear flow. In both approaches, magnetic particles undergo directed self-assembly within a polymer matrix that subsequent

Investigation of Magnetic Nanoparticle Recovery using a Quadrupole Magnetic Field via Numerical Simulation and SAXS.

Magnetic nanoparticles (MNPs) have recently attracted considerable attention for various chemical and biomedical applications due to their unique properties. However, their separation from liquid solutions through magnetophoresis is challenging, as Brownian forces play a significant role when the particle size decreases below 50 nm. In this study, we investigate the separation of 27.5 nm superparamagnetic iron oxide nanoparticles (SPIONs) using a quadrupole magnetic sorter (QMS) with high magnetic field gradients. Small-angle X-ray scattering (SAXS) was employed to track SPION manipulation, re

Aligned Conductive Magnetic Nanofibers with Directional Magnetic Field Stimulation Promotes Peripheral Nerve Regeneration.

Peripheral nerve injury is one of the most common disorders of the nervous system. Alternatives to autologous nerve transplantation have attracted significant interest among researchers. In this study, magnetic nanoparticles are integrated with oriented polycaprolactone (PCL) fibers, followed by the addition of a polypyrrole (Ppy) coating. Ppy-PCL/Fe3O4, when combined with a static magnetic field, activates the superparamagnetic properties of the nanoparticles while ensuring conductivity, creating an environment conducive to nerve regeneration. The optimal intensity of the external magnetic fi

Model-based machine learning for the recovery of lateral dose profiles of small photon fields in magnetic field.

Objective. To investigate the feasibility to train artificial neural networks (NN) to recover lateral dose profiles from detector measurements in a magnetic field.Approach. A novel framework based on a mathematical convolution model has been proposed to generate measurement-less training dataset. 2D dose deposition kernels and detector lateral fluence response functions of two air-filled ionization chambers and two diode-type detectors have been simulated without magnetic field and for magnetic fieldB = 0.35 and 1.5 T. Using these convolution kernels, training dataset consisting pairs of dose

Detecting and characterizing restricted diffusion with accessible magnetic field gradients.

For over 50 years, diffusion magnetic resonance has been employed in numerous studies on characterizing chemical compounds, porous media, and biological tissues. These studies have almost exclusively employed the Stejskal-Tanner (ST) pulse sequence, which is sensitive to the ensemble average propagator (EAP). EAP is a compromised version of the true diffusion propagator-a quantity that fully describes the diffusion process in any system and holds exquisite information that can be used to characterize complex samples. Recently, a new diffusion sensitization method was proposed, here referred to

Method for Identifying Seismokinetic Effects in Earth's Magnetic Field Measurements.

Analysis of variations in the components of the Earth's magnetic field, recorded at the magnetic observatory of the Institute of Ionosphere (Almaty, Kazakhstan) during the earthquakes of 22 January 2024 and 4 March 2024, showed that these fluctuations were not related to intrinsic variations in the magnetic field itself, but rather to mechanical oscillations of the magnetometer together with its support. Evidence supporting the seismokinetic origin of the variations in the vector magnetometer was the discrepancy between the total magnetic field measured by the absolute magnetometer and the tot

Crucial Role of Magnetic Dipole and Anomalous Field Dependence in NiPS3.

NiPS 3 has attracted considerable attention, yet the origin of its intriguing magnetic behaviors remains elusive due to limited insight into its low-energy anisotropy. Here, high-field torque magnetometry measurements are performed, revealing a previously unrecognized anisotropic spin response that reflects interaction terms beyond the standard XY or XXZ models. In combination with relativistic density functional theory calculations and magnetic force response theory, an effective low-energy spin Hamiltonian is constructed, elucidating not only the observed anomalous magnetic behavior but als

Low-Field Magnetic Resonance Imaging in Critical Care of Stroke.

Neurological deterioration is a frequent and clinically significant challenge in patients with acute stroke admitted to neurocritical care units, where timely neuroimaging is essential but access to advanced imaging may be limited by patient instability and logistical constraints. Low-field magnetic resonance imaging (LF-MRI) has recently emerged as a novel approach to extend MRI capability into critical care environments. This topic review synthesizes current evidence on the feasibility, safety, and evolving clinical applications of LF-MRI in neurocritical care stroke. Existing studies demons

Effects of magnetic field-assisted thawing on the physicochemical properties of blueberries.

BACKGROUND: Thawing is the central step in frozen berry processing, and it directly determines the final quality of the product. Conventional thawing is slow and has a negative impact on quality. Magnetic field application has lately been used in thawing. This study aimed to explore the impact of magnetic fields on the thawing time, water distribution, physicochemical properties, and microstructure of blueberries and to compare the results with those of air thawing (AT) and water immersion thawing (WT). RESULTS: Magnetic field-assisted air thawing (MAT) and magnetic field-assisted water immer

Manipulation of anisotropic Zhang-Rice exciton in NiPS3 by magnetic field.

The effect of external magnetic fields on the behavior of the Zhang-Rice exciton in NiPS3, which captures the physics of spin-orbital entanglement in 2D XY-type antiferromagnets, remains unclear. This study presents systematic study of angle-resolved and polarization-resolved magneto-optical photoluminescence spectra of NiPS3 in the Voigt geometry. We observed highly anisotropic, non-linear Zeeman splitting and polarization rotation of the Zhang-Rice exciton, which depends on the direction and intensity of the magnetic field and can be attributed to the spin-orbital coupling and field-induced

Evolution of 4π-Periodic Supercurrent in the Presence of an In-Plane Magnetic Field.

In the presence of a 4π-periodic contribution to the current phase relation, for example in topological Josephson junctions, odd Shapiro steps are expected to be missing. While missing odd Shapiro steps have been observed in several material systems and interpreted in the context of topological superconductivity, they have also been observed in topologically trivial junctions. Here, we study the evolution of such trivial missing odd Shapiro steps in Al-InAs junctions in the presence of an in-plane magnetic field Bθ. We find that the odd steps reappear at a crossover Bθ value, exhibiting an in-
