Diagnostic accuracy of functional magnetic resonance imaging, Wada test, magnetoencephalography, and functional transcranial Doppler sonography for memory and language outcome after epilepsy surgery: A systematic review.

OBJECTIVE: The European Union-funded E-PILEPSY project was launched to develop guidelines and recommendations for epilepsy surgery. In this systematic review, we aimed to assess the diagnostic accuracy of functional magnetic resonance imaging (fMRI), Wada test, magnetoencephalography (MEG), and functional transcranial Doppler sonography (fTCD) for memory and language decline after surgery. METHODS: The literature search was conducted using PubMed, Embase, and CENTRAL. The diagnostic accuracy was expressed in terms of sensitivity and specificity for postoperative language or memory decline, as

Repetitive subconcussion results in disrupted neural activity independent of concussion history.

Concussion is a public health crisis that results in a complex cascade of neurochemical changes that can have life-changing consequences. Subconcussions are generally considered less serious, but we now realize repetitive subconcussions can lead to serious neurological deficits. Subconcussions are common in contact sports and the military where certain personnel are exposed to repetitive occupational blast overpressure. Post-mortem studies show subconcussion is a better predictor than concussion for chronic traumatic encephalopathy-a progressive and fatal neurodegenerative tauopathy, only diag

Decreased language laterality in tuberous sclerosis complex: a relationship between language dominance and tuber location as well as history of epilepsy.

Nearly 90% of patients with tuberous sclerosis complex (TSC) have epilepsy. Epilepsy surgery can be considered, which often requires a presurgical assessment of language lateralization. This is the first study to investigate language lateralization in TSC patients using magnetoencephalography. Fifteen patients performed a language task during magnetoencephalography recording. Cerebral generators of language-evoked fields (EF) were identified in each patient. Laterality indices (LI) were computed using magnetoencephalography data extracted from the inferior frontal as well as middle and superio

Decreased beta-band activity in left supramarginal gyrus reflects cognitive decline: Evidence from a large clinical dataset in patients with dementia.

Cognitive impairment is a major concern in clinical medicine. It is usually evaluated with neuropsychological assessments, which have inherent limitations. To compensate for them, magnetoencephalography has already come into clinical use to evaluate the level of cognitive impairment. It evaluates global changes in the frequency of resting-state brain activity, which are associated with cognitive status. However, it remains unclear what neural mechanism causes the frequency changes. To understand this, it is important to identify cortical regions that mainly contribute to these changes. We retr

The cortical neurophysiological signature of amyotrophic lateral sclerosis.

The progressive loss of motor function characteristic of amyotrophic lateral sclerosis is associated with widespread cortical pathology extending beyond primary motor regions. Increasing muscle weakness reflects a dynamic, variably compensated brain network disorder. In the quest for biomarkers to accelerate therapeutic assessment, the high temporal resolution of magnetoencephalography is uniquely able to non-invasively capture micro-magnetic fields generated by neuronal activity across the entire cortex simultaneously. This study examined task-free magnetoencephalography to characterize the c

Alpha rhythm slowing in temporal lobe epilepsy across scalp EEG and MEG.

EEG slowing is reported in various neurological disorders including Alzheimer's, Parkinson's and Epilepsy. Here, we investigate alpha rhythm slowing in individuals with refractory temporal lobe epilepsy compared with healthy controls, using scalp EEG and magnetoencephalography. We retrospectively analysed data from 17 (46) healthy controls and 22 (24) individuals with temporal lobe epilepsy who underwent scalp EEG and magnetoencephalography recordings as part of presurgical evaluation. Resting-state, eyes-closed recordings were source reconstructed using the standardized low-resolution brain e

Magnetoencephalographic analysis in a case of early-onset benign childhood occipital seizures.

We report a 12-year-old boy who had one seizure comprising deviation of the eyes followed by impairment of consciousness for 30 minutes at the age of 6 years. No visual hallucination or ictal vomiting was observed. Interictal electroencephalography showed repetitive spikes and spike-wave discharges over the left occipital lobe. Magnetoencephalography revealed that the estimated dipoles were clustered in the left cuneus on magnetic resonance imaging, which corresponded to the area of peripheral vision and the associated visual cortex but not to the central visual cortex. Magnetoencephalography

Magnetoencephalographic Abnormalities in Creutzfeldt-Jakob Disease: A Case Report.

Creutzfeldt-Jakob disease (CJD) is a rare neurodegenerative disease with no effective therapy available. We recorded spontaneous magnetoencephalography and auditory evoked fields (AEFs) from a male patient with a rapidly progressive memory disorder, ataxia and myoclonus. Post-mortem examination confirmed sporadic CJD. Sources of the abnormal slow wave activity were localized with a beamformer software. Sources of sharp transients and AEFs were modeled with equivalent current dipoles. The estimated sources of spontaneous activity abnormalities were more dominant in the left hemisphere, in line

Alzheimer's disease and its progression reduce pyramidal cell gain and connectivity.

INTRODUCTION: Alzheimer's disease (AD) affects neurophysiology by loss of neurons, synapses, and neurotransmitters. A mechanistic understanding of the human disease will facilitate new treatments. METHODS: Magnetoencephalography was recorded during an auditory mismatch negativity paradigm from healthy adults (n = 14) and people with symptomatic AD (n = 45, amyloid biomarker positive) at baseline and after 16 months. Fourteen people with AD had repeat magnetoencephalography at 2 weeks to assess test-retest reliability. Dynamic causal models were fitted to the evoked responses and analyzed usin

Reduced gamma oscillation during visual processing of the mother's face in children with autism spectrum disorder: A pilot study.

AIM: This study aimed to investigate gamma oscillations related to face processing of children with autism spectrum disorders and typically developed children using magnetoencephalography. METHODS: We developed stimuli that included naturalistic real-time eye-gaze situations between participants and their mothers. Eighteen young children with autism spectrum disorders (62-97 months) and 24 typically developed children (61-79 months) were included. The magnetoencephalography data were analyzed in the bilateral banks of the superior temporal sulcus, fusiform gyrus, and pericalcarine cortex for

Behavioral and Magnetoencephalographic Correlates of Fear Generalization Are Associated With Responses to Later Virtual Reality Exposure Therapy in Spider Phobia.

BACKGROUND: Because overgeneralization of fear is a pathogenic marker of anxiety disorders, we investigated whether pretreatment levels of fear generalization in spider-phobic patients are related to their response to exposure-based treatment to identify pretreatment moderators of treatment success. METHODS: A total of 90 patients with spider phobia completed pretreatment clinical and magnetoencephalography assessments, one session of virtual reality exposure therapy, and a posttreatment clinical assessment. Based on the primary outcome (30% symptom reduction in self-reported symptoms), they

Helium Optically Pumped Magnetometers Can Detect Epileptic Abnormalities as Well as SQUIDs as Shown by Intracerebral Recordings.

Magnetoencephalography based on superconducting quantum interference devices (SQUIDs) has been shown to improve the diagnosis and surgical treatment decision for presurgical evaluation of drug-resistant epilepsy. Still, its use remains limited because of several constraints such as cost, fixed helmet size, and the obligation of immobility. A new generation of sensors, optically pumped magnetometers (OPMs), could overcome these limitations. In this study, we validate the ability of helium-based OPM (4He-OPM) sensors to record epileptic brain activity thanks to simultaneous recordings with intra

Reading therapy strengthens top-down connectivity in patients with pure alexia.

This study tested the efficacy of audio-visual reading training in nine patients with pure alexia, an acquired reading disorder caused by damage to the left ventral occipitotemporal cortex. As well as testing the therapy's impact on reading speed, we investigated the functional reorganization underlying therapy-induced behavioural changes using magnetoencephalography. Reading ability was tested twice before training (t1 and t2) and twice after completion of the 6-week training period (t3 and t4). At t3 there was a significant improvement in word reading speed and reduction of the word length e

Age-related effects in working memory recognition modulated by retroactive interference.

One of the main causes for age-related declines in working memory is a higher vulnerability to retroactive interference due to a reduced ability to suppress irrelevant information. However, the underlying neural correlates remain to be established. Magnetoencephalography was used to investigate differential neural patterns in young and older adults performing an interference-based memory task with two experimental conditions, interrupting and distracting, during successful recognition. Behaviorally, both types of retroactive interference significantly impaired accuracy at recognition more in o

Multilayer MEG source modelling enables depth-resolved laminar inference in humans.

Neural dynamics at the laminar level are critical for cortical computation. However, in humans, non-invasive methods to probe such dynamics have been limited to coarse distinctions between deep and superficial layers. Here, we present a multilayer magnetoencephalography source reconstruction framework and evaluate the conditions under which depth-resolved laminar inference may be feasible. Using simulations, we systematically assess the limits of magnetoencephalography depth resolution, showing that laminar discrimination depends on sufficiently high signal-to-noise ratio, precise co-registrat

Aberrant occipital dynamics differentiate HIV-infected patients with and without cognitive impairment.

Combination antiretroviral therapies have revolutionized the treatment of HIV infection, and many patients now enjoy a lifespan equal to that of the general population. However, HIV-associated neurocognitive disorders (HAND) remain a major health concern, with between 30% and 70% of all HIV-infected patients developing cognitive impairments during their life time. One important feature of HAND is visuo-perceptual deficits, but the systems-level neural dynamics underlying these impairments are poorly understood. In the current study, we use magnetoencephalography and advanced time series analys

Fixation duration on natural scenes is explained by memory encoding not processing demand.

Before each of around 200,000 eye movements we make each day, the brain decides how long to fixate before shifting gaze to new information. Here we investigate this process using a large-scale scene-viewing experiment (4,080 natural scenes, five participants) that combines magnetoencephalography, eye tracking and a semantic captioning task. Using multivariate analysis of magnetoencephalography source-space patterns, behavioral analyses and artificial neural network (ANN) modeling, we show that longer fixations do not reflect prolonged visual processing but relate to downstream memory encoding.

Cortical reorganization after modified constraint-induced movement therapy in pediatric hemiplegic cerebral palsy.

Constraint-induced movement therapy improves motor function in the affected hand of children with hemiplegic cerebral palsy and results in cortical changes in adults with stroke. This study measured clinical improvement and cortical reorganization in a child with hemiplegia who underwent modified constraint-induced movement therapy for 3 weeks. Clinical, functional magnetic resonance imaging and magnetoencephalography measurements were done at baseline, after therapy, and 6 months after therapy. Modified constraint-induced movement therapy resulted in clinical improvement as measured by the Pe
