Treatment of malaria depends on the infecting Plasmodium species. In Plasmodium falciparum malaria the treatment also depends on whether chloroquine resistances occur and whether the course is uncomplicated or complicated. Uncomplicated cases are cared for with chloroquine and with mefloquine or halofantrine when the patient comes from areas with chloroquine resistances. Patients with complicated Plasmodium falciparum malaria must get chinine and doxycycline. A careful fluid balance is extremely important in order to prevent noncardiac pulmonary edemas. Luminal infections with pathogenic Entam

Although malaria has been largely eradicated from temperate countries, it is on the increase in the tropics. Infection with Plasmodium falciparum affects a vast number of people and kills over a million annually. Severe malaria is a multisystem disease affecting particularly the central nervous system (causing coma and convulsions), the kidneys (resulting in acute tubular necrosis), and the liver (contributing to lactic acidosis and hypoglycaemia). Acute pulmonary oedema (acute respiratory distress syndrome) may occur in adults particularly in association with renal impairment. In children the

A case of congenital malaria infection has been studied in a 46-day old female Korean infant. Her mother suffered from malaria infection during pregnancy in Uppervolta, Africa, and returned to Korea at the 9th month of gestation for delivery. At 39 days of age, the clinical features characterized by fever, irritability, pallor, jaundice and hepatosplenomegaly were developed. The laboratory data revealed a hemolytic anemia with thrombocytopenia, hyperbilirubinemia and increased hepatic enzyme values. A peripheral blood smear demonstrated intraerythrocytic malarial parasites snd gametocytes of P

The neurological complications of malaria--an almost universal problem although it occurs mainly in the tropics--constitute the commonest cause of death and morbidity. These complications usually occur in P. falciparum infections and in those who are non-immune, such as children, pregnant women and visitors to areas endemic for malaria. They are rare in children suffering from protein-calorie malnutrition. Febrile convulsions, the commonest childhood emergency in the African and cerebral malaria are the commonest neurological complications. Spinal cord disorders and polyneuropathy have been de

A paludometric study of the 1970-1979 decade in French Guyana, shows a 2.7% plasmodic index, with a mean incidence of 6.4 per 1,000 habitants and a very high prevalence of P. falciparum (84%). Anopheles darlingi, the principal vector, still remains sensitive to DDT after 30 years of insecticide utilisation. The autochthonous malaria occurs permanently in the bordering areas between Guyana and Brasil at the East and between Guyana and Surinam at the West. In the other parts of the country, in the Island of Cayenne particularly, seasonal epidemics appear during the dry months and are due to impo

The erythrocytic phase of malarial infection provides a potent stimulus for the production of specific malarial antibody. Serologic tests do not provide any indication of immune status, so that much specific antibody has no protective function. The role of serum antibody in acquired malarial immunity has, however, been established by passive transfer tests, and in the case of P. knowlesi by specific inhibition of the cyclic growth of parasites in vitro. The inhibitory antibody appears to combine with merozoites and prevents their attachment to red cells, thus interrupting the cyclic proliferat

BACKGROUND: There is a prevalent perception of low personal risk of malaria in Ghana. This perception and other beliefs about the disease held by caregivers may influence hesitancy toward childhood malaria vaccination. Understanding these dynamics is crucial to the national scale-up of the malaria vaccines. This study investigates this relationship to inform strategies for enhancing vaccination coverage.
METHODS: This cross-sectional household study was conducted in six regions across Ghana. Data were collected from 2590 adults. Malaria vaccine hesitancy was measured by adapting the seven-ite

Malaria remains a critical global health concern, especially in tropical and subtropical regions, where it causes substantial morbidity and mortality. Current diagnostic methods, such as microscopy and PCR-based assays, are reliable but often impractical in resource-limited settings due to their dependency on complex equipment and skilled personnel. This study developed a novel malaria diagnostic platform by combining the Chelex-100/boiling DNA extraction method with a Loop-mediated Isothermal Amplification-MicroScanner (LAMP-MS) assay. The Chelex-100/boiling method is simpler and more cost-ef

BACKGROUND & OBJECTIVES: India targets malaria elimination by 2030 in a phased manner, so malaria's assured diagnosis is crucial. Introduction of rapid diagnostic kits in India in 2010 has revolutionized malaria surveillance. The storage temperature of rapid diagnostic tests (RDTs), kit components and handling in transportations impact the results of RDTs. Therefore, quality assurance (QA) is required before it reaches end-users. The Indian Council of Medical Research-National Institute of Malaria Research (ICMR-NIMR) has a World Health Organization (WHO) recognized lot-testing laboratory faci

Studying the behaviour and trophic preferences of mosquitoes is an important step in understanding the exposure of vertebrate hosts to vector-borne diseases. In the case of human malaria, transmission increases when mosquitoes feed more on humans than on other animals. Therefore, understanding the spatio-temporal dynamics of vectors and their feeding preferences is essential for improving vector control measures. In this study, we investigated the feeding behaviour of Anopheles mosquitoes at two sites in the Sudanian areas of Senegal where transmission is low following the implementation of ve

BACKGROUND: The RTS,S/AS01 malaria vaccine is currently being evaluated in a cluster-randomized pilot implementation programme in three African countries. This study seeks to identify whether vaccination could reach additional children who are at risk from malaria but do not currently have access to, or use, core malaria interventions.
METHODS: Using data from household surveys, the overlap between malaria intervention coverage and childhood vaccination (diphtheria-tetanus-pertussis dose 3, DTP3) uptake in 20 African countries with at least one first administrative level unit with Plasmodium

The prevalence of malaria in India is decreasing, but it remains a major concern for public health administration. The role of submicroscopic malaria and asymptomatic malaria parasitemia and their persistence is being explored. A cross-sectional survey was conducted in the Kandhamal district of Odisha (India) during May-June 2017. Blood samples were collected from 1897 individuals for screening of asymptomatic parasitemia. Samples were screened using rapid diagnostic tests (RDTs) and examined microscopically for Plasmodium species. Approximately 30% of randomly selected samples (n = 586) were

Malaria during pregnancy results in intrauterine growth restriction, fetal anemia, and infant mortality. Women are more susceptible to malaria during pregnancy due to malaria-induced inflammation and the sequestration of infected red blood cells in the placenta, which bind to the chondroitin sulfate portion of syndecan-1 on the syncytiotrophoblast and in the intervillous space. Syndecan-1 is a dimeric proteoglycan with an extracellular ectodomain that is cleaved from the transmembrane domain (referred to as "shedding") by matrix metalloproteinases (MMPs), likely the secreted MMP-9. The ectodom

Over time, several exciting advances have been made in the treatment and prevention of malaria; however, this devastating disease continues to be a major global health problem and affects millions of people every year. Notably, the paucity of new efficient drug molecules and the inevitable drug resistance of the malaria parasite, Plasmodium falciparum, against frontline therapeutics are the foremost struggles facing malaria eradication initiatives. According to the malaria eradication agenda, the discovery of new chemical entities that can destroy the parasite at the liver stage, the asexual b

BACKGROUND: Plasmodium vivax is one of the major species of malaria infecting humans. Although emphasis on P. falciparum is appropriate, the burden of vivax malaria should be given due attention. This study aimed to synthesize the evidence on severe malaria in P. vivax infection compared with that in P. falciparum infection.
METHODS/PRINCIPAL FINDINGS: We searched relevant studies in electronic databases. The main outcomes required for inclusion in the review were mortality, severe malaria (SM) and severe anaemia (SA). The methodological quality of the included studies was assessed using the

Albeit pregnancy-associated malaria (PAM) poses a potential risk for over 125 million women each year, an accurate review assessing the impact on malaria in infants has yet to be conducted. In addition to an effect on low birth weight (LBW) and prematurity, PAM determines foetal exposure to Plasmodium falciparum in utero and is correlated to congenital malaria and early development of clinical episodes during infancy. This interaction plausibly results from an ongoing immune tolerance process to antigens in utero, however, a complete explanation of this immune process remains a question for fu

The prospects for the success of malaria control depend, in part, on the basic reproductive number for malaria, R0. Here, we estimate R0 in a novel way for 121 African populations, and thereby increase the number of R0 estimates for malaria by an order of magnitude. The estimates range from around one to more than 3,000. We also consider malaria transmission and control in finite human populations, of size H. We show that classic formulas approximate the expected number of mosquitoes that could trace infection back to one mosquito after one parasite generation, Z0(H), but they overestimate the

The effects of three separate antimalarial prophylactic regimens (proguanil, sulfisoxazole, and proguanil plus sulfisoxazole) and of vitamins in a control group were compared in a study population of 380 children living in a malaria endemic area along the Thai-Burmese border. The subjects, aged 5-16 years, were matched for age, weight, and presence of splenomegaly, then randomly assigned to one of the four groups. All medications were administered daily by the investigators and malaria smears were performed on a weekly basis. Among 99 subjects taking proguanil plus sulfisoxazole for a total of
