This pilot study describes women's interpretations of the experience of a false positive mammogram followed by a negative biopsy and the impact of this experience on subsequent participation in screening mammography. A 25-min, open-ended telephone interview was administered in 1992 to 30 women over age 39 who had negative biopsies in 1987 preceded by abnormal mammograms. Almost twice as many women reported getting regular mammograms after the biopsy (60%) as did before 1987 (33%). When interpreting mammography, breast radiologists may identify radiopaque densities in the axilla on the mediolateral oblique or lateral projections. When such densities are encountered, true calcifications must be differentiated from pseudocalcifications (artifact). Using imaging, breast radiologists should be able to localize the finding as being dermal, within the soft tissues, within a lymph node, or intramuscular. By combining the anatomic location with the clinical presentation and any other imaging findings, breast radiologists will be able to determine the most appropriate management.

A routine mammogram identified changes thought to be due to a lymph node, which was confirmed on biopsy. The lymph node was infiltrated with macrophages and showed fragmented acid-fast bacilli. The patient had been treated for leprosy some years before and was still taking thalidomide for erythema nodosum leprosum. Leprosy-associated lymphadenopathy may be identified on routine breast screening.

AIM: Aim of the study is to evaluate breast masses using mammography (MG) and ultrasonography (USG) independently and in combination.
MATERIALS AND METHODS: Our study group consisted of 62 female patients, with breast symptoms such as palpable lumps, pain in the breast and nipple discharge who were examined prospectively over a period of 6 months. All 62 patients were examined by both MG and USG independently.
