Mandibular distraction osteogenesis is an effective tool with which to correct facial asymmetry, restore proper occlusion and, more importantly, create an appropriate airway in the micrognathic infant. As a component of many syndromes, micrognathia can impair feeding and speech development and can obstruct the neonatal airway. However, bony lengthening secondary to external mandibular distraction osteogenesis can provide added space, preventing oropharyngeal soft tissues from occluding the airway. Although external distraction of the mandible has been applied for more than a decade, this proce

The endoscope-assisted technique for the repair of subcondylar fractures of the mandible has been in use for approximately a decade, and its acceptance continues to grow as more surgeons gain experience. It provides for transoral access to the condylar neck region of the mandible, allowing for repair of fractures in this region with minimal if any facial scarring, while also minimizing the risk of facial nerve injury. The authors describe their technique for performing the transoral, endoscopic-assisted approach for repair of subcondylar fractures and report their experience with 48 endoscopic

Tubulopapillary hidradenomas are uncommon benign tumors of the dermis, most commonly occurring in the skin of the head or of the extremities. Complete excision is generally curative and recurrences are rare. The authors describe an unusual case of an intraosseous tubulopapillary hidradenoma of the mandible that recurred 1 year after initial curettage and required en-bloc resection.

BACKGROUND: This report presents a case of leukaemic infiltration of the mandible in a 10-year-old female of Sudanese extraction.
CASE REPORT: The patient was in remission from acute lymphoblastic leukaemia when she presented with pain localized to the alveolar ridge overlying the unerupted lower right second permanent molar. Two days later, she developed right inferior alveolar nerve paraesthesia. Radiographic imaging demonstrated cortical line absence around the developing lower right second and third permanent molars, and distal displacement of the lower right third molar. In addition, the

Even in the absence of malformation or skull base asymmetry, the mandible may be physiologically asymmetric and this remains a major challenge in the orthodontic treatment. The mandible is a bone formed by a primary subunit, i.e., the neural part, with different functional secondary subunits, so we suggest that in a normal mandible the asymmetry was caused by the secondary functional subunit and the neural part is nearly symmetric. Eighty-three dry human mandible samples were studied. The measurements of the size of the mandible (corpus, ramus, mandible notch, condylar process, the angle of th

Osteoma is a slow-growing benign osseous neoplasm. The mandible and paranasal sinuses are the most commonly affected sites in the maxillofacial region. Clinically, this neoplasm may be silent for years without any symptoms and diagnosed only when it becomes big enough or observed coincidentally during radiological investigations. In this paper, a case of peripheral mandibular osteoma in a 66-year-old male patient is presented. The patient was referred to our ENT clinic with a suspected parotid neoplasm because of a swelling in the right preauricular region.

Since 1996, seven patients from six radiotherapy facilities that treat more than 2,000 patients per year were treated with radiotherapy for symptomatic metastases to the mandible from primary carcinoma of the prostate (3 patients), carcinoma of the breast (2 patients), adenocarcinoma of the ethmoid sinuses (1 patient), and multiple myeloma (1 patient). All patients presented with pain of several weeks' duration and had radiographic confirmation of a destructive lesion in the mandible. Administered radiotherapy doses ranged from 400 cGy/1 fraction to 4,000 cGy/20 fractions. All patients experie

OBJECTIVES/HYPOTHESIS: Vascular malformations involving the mandible and maxilla are uncommon, and no uniform treatment of these lesions has been defined. The purpose of the study was to evaluate the effectiveness of treating vascular malformations with a multidisciplinary approach and emphasis on endovascular therapy.
STUDY DESIGN: Retrospective chart review of patients.
METHODS: The treatment of 31 patients (13 male and 18 female patients) with mandibular and/or maxillary vascular malformations presenting between 1979 to 2001 was reviewed.
RESULTS: Thirteen patients (42%) presented with m

We present a case of haemangioma of the mandible in a 46-year-old woman. The radiological appearance was of a unilocular radiolucency that looked similar to other more common lesions of the mandible. This case shows that a potentially life-threatening haemangioma can present as an apparently benign cyst-like unilocular radiolucency, and highlights the need to include haemangioma in many differential diagnoses, and the importance of taking all radiological features into account.

PURPOSE: The aim of this study was to review our experience of nonunion of mandible fractures and to compare this information with the past and present literature. The analysis also evaluated risk factors and those conditions that lead to nonunion so that the complication may be better managed and possible avoided.
PATIENTS AND METHODS: A retrospective review of mandible fractures in a major medical center was carried out on patients treated from 1994 through 1998. The nonunion cases were evaluated for factors such as age, sex, race, cause of fracture, location of fracture, delay until the pa

In recent years, lengthening the human mandible by distraction osteogenesis has become an accepted treatment to correct severe mandibular hypoplasia. Using intraoral unidirectional and extraoral bidirectional distraction devices we report about our experiences and results in the application of the bone distraction technique in four selected cases of syndromal disease, including various forms of mandibular hypoplastic malformations. The patients involved were a boy with Pierre Robin syndrome, a girl with unilateral facial hypoplasia in Goldenhar's syndrome, a case with Nager's syndrome, and a r

Following tooth loss, the mandible shows an extensive loss of bone in some individuals. This may pose a significant problem in the prosthodontic restoration of function and esthetics. The many factors which have been proposed as being responsible for the inter-individual variation in post-extraction remodeling mean that a perfunctory analysis of the literature, in which well-controlled, relevant studies are scarce, may not provide the whole story. This article reviews the local and systemic factors which may play a role in the post-extraction remodeling of the mandible. Since severe residual r

This paper presents two cases in which supplemental premolars were an incidental finding. Although anomalies of tooth number and form are quite common, both cases demonstrate late forming supernumeraries with one case illustrating their development in a more unusual site. It is not routine practice to screen for late development of teeth during orthodontic treatment. Therefore the possibility of their interference with occlusal development or orthodontic mechanics such as space closure, should always be kept in mind.

A thorough knowledge of applied anatomy is essential for the success of surgical techniques: the operator uses this knowledge by taking advantage of recognized structures to aid a procedure or to avoid complications. Of all the facial bones, the mandible is the largest and toughest, and exploitation of its anatomy has lead to the development of better techniques for diagnosis and treatment. This article describes how this has come about.

Preservation of mandible in selected cases of oral cancer provides good quality of life following surgery. The present paper based on 37 cases discusses the indications, surgical techniques and results of marginal resection of mandible. It was feasible to carry out conservation surgery even in advanced lesions (31 of 37 had stage III and IV lesion). It could be carried out in lesions close to or those clinically seem to involve the bone provided there was negative radiology. Marginal mandibulectomy could be combined with mandibulotomy in selected cases to achieve additional soft tissue clearan
