Marijuana-induced mania in a healthy adolescent: a case report.

Marijuana is the most commonly used illegal substance by adolescents in the United States. According to a 2009 survey conducted by Monitoring the Future, there were about 11.8% of 8th graders, 26.7% of 10th graders and 32.8% of 12th graders who had abused marijuana at least once in the year (Johnston L.D., Bachman J.G., O'Malley P.M., Schulenberg J.E. Monitoring the Future: A Continuing Study of American Youth (12th-Grade Survey), 2009 [Computer file]. ICPSR28401-v1. Coping motives as a mediator of the relationship between child maltreatment and substance use problems in south African adolescents.

BACKGROUND: Evidence suggests that adults with a history of child maltreatment (CM) engage in substance misuse driven by 'coping motives': maladaptive beliefs that substances help them cope with negative emotions. However, the specificity of this risk pathway is under-researched in younger and non-Western cohorts. OBJECTIVE: The present study aimed to determine whether coping motives play a distinct role compared to other motives for substance use in mediating the relationship between CM and problematic alcohol and marijuana use in a sample of South African adolescents. PARTICIPANTS AND SETT

Voucher-based incentives. A substance abuse treatment innovation.

In this report we provide an overview of research on the voucher-based incentives approach to substance abuse treatment. This approach was originally developed as a novel method for improving retention and increasing cocaine abstinence among cocaine-dependent outpatients. The efficacy of vouchers for those purposes is now well established, and plans are underway to move the intervention into effectiveness testing in community clinics. The use of vouchers also has been extended to the treatment of alcohol, marijuana, nicotine, and opioid dependence. Particularly noteworthy is that vouchers hold

Priapism following trazodone overdose with cocaine use.

Priapism is a urologic disorder and medical emergency with a variety of known etiologies including the use of psychotropic medications. The antidepressant trazodone is the agent most frequently implicated in the precipitation of priapism. Additionally, a number of drugs of abuse including marijuana, ethanol, and cocaine have been known to cause the disorder. It is unknown if drugs may act in an additive or a synergistic manner to cause priapism. We report a case of priapism which occurred following trazodone overdose in an individual actively using cocaine. This case suggests that combined tra

Treatment of dual diagnosis patients: a relapse prevention group approach.

The authors describe the successful use of an adjunctive group psychotherapy for substance-abusing patients with major psychiatric disorders (bipolar, schizophrenia, schizoaffective, psychotic depression, and atypical psychosis). The group utilizes a psychoeducational approach that focuses on substance abuse causes and consequences, principles of recovery, and relapse prevention strategies. Eight patients with prolonged histories of abuse of cocaine, alcohol, marijuana, or other drugs were enrolled in this weekly group treatment at a community mental health center drug treatment program, while

Why Are Adolescent Cannabis Use Disorder Treatment Admissions Declining in the US? The Mediated Pathway of State Treatment Admissions Rates before and after Recreational Cannabis Legalization.

Purpose: State-level prevalence data are used to investigate whether recreational cannabis legalization moderates the mediated pathway from the perception of low risk of harm, to cannabis use, to cannabis use disorder (CUD) treatment admissions, among adolescents (age 12-17) in the US. Methods: Annual state prevalence measures of perception of low risk, cannabis use, and CUD treatment admissions between 2008 and 2019 (N = 542 state-year observations) were collected from the National Survey on Drug Use and Health (NSDUH) and the Treatment Episode Dataset - Admissions (TEDS-A). Teratogenic effects of maternal drug abuse on developing brain and underlying neurotransmitter mechanisms.

The aim of this review is to highlight our knowledge of the various drugs of abuse that can prove potential teratogens affecting the brain and cognitive development in an individual exposed to maternal consumption of such agents. Among several drugs of abuse in women, we specifically highlighted the commonly used alcohol, nicotine, opioids, cannabis, cocaine and marijuana. These drugs can affect the fetal development and slow the cognitive maturation apart from physical disabilities. However, no known therapy exists to counter the toxic potential of these drugs. Several researchers used animal

Adolescent substance abuse and psychiatric comorbidities.

The use and abuse of substances-including alcohol, nicotine, marijuana, inhalants, and other drugs-are commonly found to be comorbid with psychiatric conditions in adolescents. This dual diagnosis requires special attention and treatment, especially as substance use often begins during this developmental period. Adolescents may be diagnosed with substance abuse, substance dependence, or substance use disorder not otherwise specified, which indicates a developing substance use problem that includes symptoms of but does not meet criteria for substance dependence. Psychiatric comorbidity in adole

[Attention deficit hyperactivity disorder, facilitating alcohol and drug abuse in an adult].

Attention-deficit hyperactivity disorder (ADHD) has been considered a mental and behavioral disorder of childhood and adolescence. It is being increasingly recognized in adults, who may have psychiatric co-morbidity with secondary depression, or a tendency to drug and alcohol abuse. We describe a 32-year-old woman known for years as suffering from borderline personality disorder and drug dependence (including hashish, marijuana, LSD and "ecstasy") and alcohol abuse that did not respond to treatment. Only when correctly diagnosed as ADHD and appropriately treated with the psychotropic stimulant

Bilateral Acute Hippocampal Ischemia in Two Patients Abusing Cocaine: What is the Outcome?

Hippocampal ischemia is a rare complication of cocaine abuse that has been thought to arise from vasospasm, anoxic injury, and/or catecholaminergic excitotoxicity. We present two cases of patients abusing cocaine, who presented with an acute onset anterograde amnesia due to bilateral hippocampal ischemia, and had different outcomes. Case 1 is a 49-year-old male with a history of IV heroin abuse who presented after being found down for an unknown period of time. He awoke with no memory of events leading up to hospitalization and was unable to retain new information. Urine toxicology was positiv

The link between recent sexual abuse and drug use among African American male college students: it's not just a female problem in and around campus.

This study examined the relationship between sexual abuse in or around campus and drug use among young African-American males in college. It offers cross-sectional analysis of data collected from the Alcohol and Substance Abuse Awareness and Use Study (ASAAUS). Data collection took place in October 2004 via a self-administered survey among 181 African-American male students. Males who reported past sexual abuse in or around campus were significantly more likely than nonsexually-abused males to have used tobacco (41% v. 19%, p < .05), alcohol (82% v. 49%, p < .05), marijuana (59% v. 30%, p < .0

The relationship between parent and offspring comorbid disorders.

Data concerning alcohol and drug abuse and dependence, depression, and antisocial behaviors, among both subjects and their parents, were obtained from a community sample of 1,201 young adults. Although 35% of the sample exhibited alcohol abuse or dependence, 14% marijuana or cocaine abuse or dependence, and 22% reported a parent positive for alcoholism, evidence of comorbidity with depression or antisocial personality was generally rare among both parents and subjects. Over one third of the subjects were negative both for family history and any disorder of their own and 20% reported a problem

Substance abuse.

The potential for human developmental toxicity caused by chemical exposure was not generally recognized until the thalidomide tragedy of the early 1960s, at which time it was acknowledged that the placenta is not a barrier protecting the fetus. The focus of this chapter is to present the role of substance abuse screening in prenatal care, the gamut of drugs, and the clinical implications of the substances abused by pregnant women, as well as the legal and ethical considerations. Physiologic and care issues will be discussed. Legal substances discussed include the commonly used artificial sweet

The prediction of drug dependence from expectancy for hostility while intoxicated.

Three hundred seventy-one male substance-abusing volunteers for drug studies were administered the Buss-Durkee Hostility Inventory (B-D). One hundred nineteen of these subjects were readministered the B-D with the instruction to answer the items in terms of their behavior while drinking alcohol, with 67 of these subjects also completing a heroin use condition. Expectancies for hostility under alcohol or heroin were generally uncorrelated with other measures of personality, psychopathology, antisocial personality, impulsiveness, or criminality; but expectancies for hostility under alcohol were

Relation of Cannabis Use Frequency and Gambling Behavior in Individuals Who Gamble Under the Influence of Cannabis.

There appears to be a significant positive relation between problematic cannabis use and problem gambling behaviors. Recent reviews have noted that individuals who use cannabis more frequently may experience less acute executive functioning impairment than those who use cannabis less often. The current study explored the relation between cannabis use frequency and problem gambling outcomes in those who gamble under the influence of cannabis, to explore if increased cannabis use frequency increases reported gambling problems, or is the reported effect on their gambling behavior is lessened in i

Building smart cannabis policy from the science up.

Social attitudes and cultural norms around the issue of substance abuse are shifting rapidly around the world, leading to complex and unpredictable consequences. On the positive side, efforts to more intensely disseminate the scientific evidence for the many connections between chronic substance use and the emergence of measurable and discrete brain dysfunctions, has ushered in an evolving climate of acceptance and a new era of improved access to more effective interventions, at least in the United States. On the negative side, there has been a steady erosion in the public perception of the ha

Adverse effects of cannabis.

Cannabis, Cannabis sativa L., is used to produce a resin that contains high levels of cannabinoids, particularly delta9-tetrahydrocannabinol (THC), which are psychoactive substances. Although cannabis use is illegal in France and in many other countries, it is widely used for its relaxing or euphoric effects, especially by adolescents and young adults. What are the adverse effects of cannabis on health? During consumption? And in the long term? Does cannabis predispose users to the development of psychotic disorders? To answer these questions, we reviewed the available evidence using the stand

High school polydrug users and abusers.

Among 433 high school seniors, 12% were determined to be either polydrug users or abusers. In comparison to the non-polydrug users, polydrug users and abusers were significantly more likely to indicate: (1) physical abuse by and many conflicts with parents; (2) self-ratings of lazy, bored, rejected, and unhealthy, (3) serious suicidal thoughts, delinquent behavior, early use of marijuana and alcohol, and the tendency to drink more than six alcoholic drinks at a sitting; and (4) agreement with the following statements: "If something feels good, I usually do it and don't worry about the conseque
